1 1 Up the road from our house, on the left going into town, lived the Smiths: Steven Smith, his wife Sarah, their four sons, Simon, Sean, Jack and John, and their black dog Blodwin. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were teachers at the local school where my parents also worked. My father often used to say that they were like a breath of fresh air in the school staffroom, and that they were always making him laugh. My mother did not seem to share his opinion of them. She certainly never invited them around for tea. The Smiths house had many rooms, and might have looked beautiful, if it had been kept neat and tidy. But every room was full of empty wine bottles and dust. It made me feel uncomfortable. The family all had long hair and none of them appeared to own a hairbrush or a comb. But the one with the longest dirtiest hair was their dog. The family all loved him dearly and called him by his nickname Blod, but their neighbors did not share that love, and called him That Bloddy Dog. The Smiths often talked about the freedom of the individual, the dangers of nuclear power and the evils of consumer society. Above all, they believed in the importance of self expression and doing what you want to do. Perhaps for this reason, they never tied a collar or lead on Blodwin. Instead he was always free to go where he wanted. His favorite destinations were other people s gardens, where he would dig up their flowers and frighten their children. A row of trees hid the Smiths home and garden from the main road, which was probably a good thing. Their garden looked a complete mess. At any one time there would be at least a half dozen cars parked on the grass. The cars were all very old and some did not have wheels. One of the sons was always repairing them. I had always thought the word repairing meant there would be some improvement, but not in the Smith household. The cars sat there rusting in the rain for months until they were taken away, only to be replaced by other cars in a similar state. One could only guess where these cars came from. I became friends with John, the youngest of the four sons. We were in the same class at school and both loved football. After school and on the weekends, I would often go to friends houses to play, but going to John s house always worried me. I did my best to ignore the cars in the garden, but I was afraid of Blodwin and the dog knew it. He and I were not great friends. I tried to ignore him, but one day I couldn t because he bit me. I fought back by kicking him, but his teeth were much more effective weapons than my shoes. A week later my father found a new job in a town more than one hundred kilometers away. My parents told me that we would be moving house. I was not sad to be leaving. Our new house would be far away from Blodwin and that house full of empty bottles and dust. We were going to live in a place where people kept their cars clean, their gardens full of flowers, and their dogs on a lead. I don t suppose Blodwin was so sad to see me go, either. Beth Well, on Monday evening I ate dinner at the French restaurant with Nancy, and I had lunch at the Chinese one a couple of days later by myself. The service at the French restaurant was unbelievably bad and thefoodwasn tthatgreat buttheydohavecutewaiters! Marcy Well, at least there s one reason to go back again. What about the Chinese restaurant? Beth It was really noisy and rather expensive, but the duck soup was absolutely delicious! It was nearly as good as the restaurant near our office in Shanghai. Marcy By the way, do you ever think about going back there to work again? Beth Not really. Miguel has been put in charge of the office there. We didn t get along very well as co workers here in Tokyo, so I wouldn t want to have him as my boss. Marcy I remember him...the Spanish guy with the big moustache. Well, I m getting hungry, so why don t we try the Italian place and find out if it s as good as people saywait a minute...it looks like it s closed for the day.
