6 Betsy's Journal 1) Betsy wrote this in her journal one day during the summer: 2) Today, I was playing with my friends Kathy and Jerri. We were playing a game we made up. Here s what the rules were: One of the girls turns her back and closes her eyes. The others think of someplace to hide or something to pretend. Then, the person with her eyes closed turns around and tries to figure out what is going on. One time, Jerri was hiding behind a car, and I was hiding behind a bush. That was pretty easy. Kathy found us right away. Another time Kathy and I tried to lie down on the grass and make angels for Jerri to see. She had a hard time telling that we were angels. I guess we weren t that great at making angels or making up games for that matter. 3) Then, it was my turn to close my eyes. I got up on the porch and turned around. I waited, but no one said anything. So I yelled, What are you two doing? No answer. Then suddenly I heard it. My friends yelled, One, two, three..we don t like you! They were saying it to me! I burst out crying and ran across the street to my house and in the front door. I ran past my grandfather and went right to my bed and cried and cried. He didn t know what to do. 4) My mother wasn t home from work yet, but when she got home, she came in my room and asked me what was wrong. I had a hard time telling her. When I could finally tell her, she hugged me and said, They didn t mean it. Page 6
