Elementary Script Need to Know Prayer is Talking to Jesus! Bible Story Jesus Stops a Storm Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:1, 35-41; Luke 8:22-25 Reference Verse You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly. Proverbs 3:24 Characters: Props: WRIGHT An engineer who joined the business to help build contraptions that would bust fears. Moe tends to just rush in and start on his/her projects without fully thinking about it. However, Moe is always FULLY confident in the contraptions, his/her smartness, and having great hair. KNACK A monster movie script writer who has special expertise on fears. He/she joined the to help teach about different fears and communicate with the monsters who call in. Nic is more hesitant to try Moe s contraptions, works great with his/her hands, and has a horrible time working with technology. LIGHTS AT 100% LIGHTS DOWN WORSHIP LEADER Hey party people in the house, let me hear you say HEYOOOOO! (Heyoooo) Awesome! I m so glad you re back at this week. Last week, we learned that the way to bust your fears is by praying. In fact, the song we learned talked about how praying can free you from all your fears. Let s go over the motions to that song again! Hey! We re not scared (Punch right fist up, fist pump) We re set free from our fears (fist pump) Hey! We re not scared (Punch right fist up, fist pump) We re set free from our fears (fist pump) I think you ve got it! Let me get everyone standing up. Let s count it down and sing this song! FIRE: FB_ES_LG_Song_Fearless AUTO ADVANCE: FB_ES_LG_Logo w/ Teaching Music LIGHTS AT 100% Worship leader(s) exit. LIGHTS DOWN FIRE: FB_ES_LG_Opener WORSHIP LEADER So you know that praying will bust your fears, but do you know what praying IS? (Talking to God/Jesus) We are going to learn more about that at the end of, but for now, let s meet Moe and Nic and learn all about the! I want everyone to count it down with me as loud as you can! ACTION! AUTO ADVANCE: FB_ES_Wk2_LG_Thunderstorm Page 2 of 9
LIGHTS AT 100% ACT ONE: Storm s-a-blowin and enter, carrying umbrellas and wearing rain coats over lab coats. They can also be wearing rain boots. is wearing a shower cap. Wow! It is really coming down out there! I ve never seen a thunderstorm this bad. It s a good thing you had an extra umbrella in your car or else I would ve been soaking wet. I know! I do have one small question, though. (Removing shower cap) Ok, what s up? Why are you wearing that ridiculous thing on your head? (Holding out shower cap) You mean my Moisture Repeller? Is that what it s called? Why are you wearing it? Haven t you seen me wear these before? I wear them any time it s raining outside so that I won t get my beautiful hair wet! Because when my hair gets wet, it gets frizzy, and then I can t focus all day! Wooooooooow. I think you have a problem. What?? Great hair isn t a problem! It s a privilege!! Okaaaaay, enough about your hair, let s see if we have any fears to bust today. (Checking mailbox) It looks like we have some FearMail! (Picking postcard) Look! A postcard all the way from Scotland! Let s see what it says! and pretend to read the postcard while the sound clip is playing. FIRE: FB_ES_Wk2_LG_Nessy NESSY Hello there Lads and Lasses! My name is Nessy, also known as the Loch Ness Monster. I m writing to you because I have a terrible fright of water. How am I Page 3 of 9
supposed to do my job of being the infamous Loch Ness Monster, when I can t even get IN the water. I think I may be losing popularity because people aren t finding as many pictures of me lately. I ve got to figure something out and I can t do it myself! Is there a chance you can help me bust this fear I have of water? AUTO ADVANCE: FB_ES_LG_Logo w/ Acting Music Awesome! I wonder if Bigfoot went and told Nessy about how we helped him last week. (Starting to dig through container of supplies) I already know how we can help Nessy! What can I do to help? (Handing Nic the fish bowl from container of supplies) Take this and go fill it up with water. exits, carrying fish bowl. He/she can trade the fish bowl out for a full one or fill the empty one by pouring water bottles into it. Fill about halfway. enters with full fish bowl. (cont d) (Talking to self) Now, I just gotta build a sensor cable to help us test this (Pulls jumper cables and duct tape out of container of supplies) This will work! So if I stick these (Motioning to ends of cables) onto the bowl and then hook up the other end to my computer, I should be able to test the properties of each object (Setting fish bowl down on lab table) Alright. I got your water. Can you tell me what s going on exactly? (Motioning to each thing while talking) I was thinking that we could test the properties of different objects around the lab. Then, we could put those things into water. I ve created a sensor cable that will allow us to test the exact properties of each object. (Interrupting) Ohhhhhhh! So that way, we can see if there is any change in the object. If there s no change, then there s no reason to be afraid! (Glaring at Nic) You stole my thunder! Page 4 of 9
FIRE: FB_ES_Wk2_LG_Thunder SFX AUTO ADVANCE: FB_ES_Wk2_LG_Thunderstorm Sorry! It just sounds like such a great idea! I ll start finding things around the lab that we can put in water. Nic starts collecting objects banana, flip flop, and sunglasses. Perfect! I just need to connect the cables to my computer. (Picks up a USB cord from beside connects to computer and then tapes to other side of jumper cables using duct tape) I m ready to run the test, but I want to get some help. (To kids) Are there three people who want to come help Moe and me run this test? (Choose three kids - give each child one of the objects) (Going to kid with banana) Ready! First up, we have a banana. (To child) What do we know about a banana? (Some examples if kid needs help: We know that it s yellow, it s soft, and it is a fruit.) (Putting the jumper cables on the banana) I ll just get the last diagnostics from the banana to come up on the computer. (Glances at computer) Aaaaaaaaaaaand, done! Let s toss it in the water! (Place banana in fish bowl) (Looking at banana) Well, it s still banana. I can t tell if it s soft, but I think it s still a fruit after you put it in the water. Can you test the other properties with your clippity clip thing? (Connecting jumper cables to fish bowl pretending to read from computer) Everything looks the same! There are no changes to the banana when it s in water. Let s do the flip flop and the sunglasses! (Going to kids with flip flop and sunglasses) Huh. I ve been wondering where my other flip flop went. So what do you two know about the flip flop and the sunglasses? KIDS They re plastic, (color of each), they are things you d take to the beach, etc. Page 5 of 9
repeats previous sequence again touches flip flop and sunglasses with jumper cables, pretends to read from the computer, and then places them both in water. He/she uses the jumper cables again on the fish bowl and pretends to read from computer. might need to hold the flip flop and sunglasses in the water. It s ok for the banana to stay in the water too. (While reading from the computer when things are in water) Once again, all of the properties are the same. So it looks like Nessy doesn t need to be afraid of the water because it s not going to hurt him! (To kids on stage) Thanks for your help! You can head back to your seats. Great! Fear busted, right? Not quite. If we re really going to bust the fear, we need to tell Nessy what to do when he s feeling afraid. We can write a postcard back to Nessy telling him all that we found from this water test. Then, if he s ever afraid of going in the water, he can pray and ask Jesus to help him remember what this test showed that water isn t going to hurt him! I agree with you completely, but I feel like we might just want to define what prayer is for Nessy. You know just in case the word prayer doesn t translate perfectly for people or animals in Scotland. Good idea! A great way to define prayer is talking to Jesus! To wrap things up, we can explain to Nessy why he doesn t have to be afraid of water. And if he is afraid, he can pray by talking to Jesus. I think it s time we say Fear BUSTED! (Hits Fear Busted Button) FIRE: FB_ES_LG_FearBUSTED w/ SFX AUTO ADVANCE: FB_ES_LG_Logo w/ Acting Music ACT TWO: Sleep Deprivation Stress Test So was there any other FearMail in the mailbox earlier? (Checking mailbox) Yeah! Let s take a look at this letter. (Opening envelope and pulling out letter) It says, Dear, I m writing to you because I need help busting a fear. I m afraid to fall asleep because sometimes I have Page 6 of 9
nightmares or I wake up because a storm is outside. I ve been awake for six days!! Help me! Six days?!?!?! That s a really long time! Ugh, not sleeping would be the worst! (Getting an idea) Waaaaaait a second! (Looking at Nic) (Seeing Moe) Oh no you don t! I know that look! This is the look I got last time you wanted me to test one of your contraptions. And then I ended up in the hospital overnight! Whatever you re thinking, the answer is NO! (Begging) Awwww c mon!! It s an easy test! It involves sleep! (Hesitating) I m not so sure about this (Ignoring Nic)Pretty sure I heard a yes! Alright, here s what we re going to do. YOU are going to try and stay awake for as long as you can. I ll be here to help you stay awake. Then, we can see if it is better for you to fall asleep or stay awake! That doesn t sound too bad. I feel completely awake right now. It could take a while for me to pretends to click something on the computer. FIRE: FB_ES_Wk2_LG_Logo w/ Lullaby Music (cont d) (Hearing music, getting sleepy) Hmmmm doesn t that music sound nice? (Yawns) sits on the floor and starts reading children s book out loud. (cont d) (Getting more sleepy) Wow Moe, you have such a great story reading voice. It makes me feel all warm and cozy inside. (Getting a teddy bear out of the container of supplies and giving it to Nic) Yeah. Just get comfortable and faaaalllll asleeeeeeeppppp. (Cuddling with teddy bear) I m ready to go night-night. Page 7 of 9
(Grabbing spray bottle from lab table, spraying Nic s face) Don t fall asleep don t fall asleep don t fall asleep!!!! (Freaking out, trips over container of supplies and lands on the ground) Ahhhhhh!!!!!! Why did you?? What is??? (Getting frustrated) OW! I had to do it! I had to keep you awake to see if it s better to fall asleep than it is stay awake. We have to bust this fear! (Stands up and limps over to Moe) I m not even sure we need a test to bust the fear of falling asleep. I think the important thing to remember is that if you re afraid to fall asleep, you can talk to Jesus and ask Him to help you. You can ask Him to protect your dreams and sleep all the way until the morning. (Thinking) Yeah that makes sense. When you re afraid of sleeping, you should just pray by talking to Jesus. (Yawning, saying sleepily) I say that is Fear BUSTED! (Hits Fear Busted Button) FIRE: FB_ES_LG_FearBUSTED w/ SFX AUTO ADVANCE: FB_ES_LG_Logo w/ Acting Music starts getting ready to leave gets rain coat on and picking up umbrella. keeps yawning and while isn t looking, falls asleep and trips back over the container of supplies, starts snoring. The more dramatic (but not cheesy) the better! (Starts getting rain coat and umbrella ready) I think we did some great fear busting today, Nic! It is time to pack up and go home. (Hearing crash from Nic falling, turns around to look) Whoops! I probably should ve been watching him/her. (Walks over to inspect, sees that Nic is fast asleep) He/she will probably be mad at me in the morning, but I m just gonna leave him/her. (Getting an idea) But fiiiiiirst...i need to take advantage of this. (Pulling out cell phone and taking a picture of Nic) Just in case. (Tucking teddy bear close to Nic) Night-night! tiptoes offstage. After lights go down, exits as well. LIGHTS DOWN FIRE: FB_ES_LG_Logo w/ Teaching Music LIGHTS AT 100% Page 8 of 9
Worship leaders take stage WORSHIP/WRAP UP WORSHIP LEADER I m glad that Moe and Nic worked to bust all of these fears today! Let s review so we can remember it all. What fears were busted today? (Water and sleeping) How did the decide to bust all the fears? (By talking to Jesus; praying) How did they define praying? (Talking to Jesus) Great job! Now, we re going to play a game that will lead us to what we Need to Know today. The professor will have three cups. Underneath one of these cups is a ball. Follow the cup with the ball and then try to guess where the ball is at the end! Ready? GO!
