6 OEDIPUS In Thebes, a sn is brn t King Laius and Queen Jcasta. The King and Queen knw a terrible predictin has been made: that their sn will kill his father and marry his wn mther. In rder t avid the prphecy cming true, King Laius and Queen Jcasta spike the baby s feet and abandn him in the cuntryside. A shepherd finds the baby, takes him t Crinth and gives the baby t the King f Crinth t adpt. The baby is named Oedipus, which means swllen feet. One day in Crinth, smene insults Oedipus, telling him he is nt the King f Crinth s sn. This wrries Oedipus greatly, s he visits the Oracle and asks wh his father is. The Oracle just repeats the prphecy and says that Oedipus will kill his father and marry his mther. Oedipus runs away t stp the predictin cming true (still believing that the King f Crinth is his father). On the rad frm Crinth, a strange ld man is rude t Oedipus. Oedipus lses his temper and kills him, nt knwing that it is the King f Thebes, his real father. Oedipus arrives at Thebes. Everyne knws that the King has just been killed, but they are mre wrried by the Sphinx mnster wh has taken ver the city. Oedipus defeats the Sphinx and becmes a her. As a reward he is tld he can marry the Queen Jcasta. Nt knwing she is his mther, he marries her. A messenger arrives t tell Oedipus that King Plybus has died, s he is nw King f Crinth. Oedipus is relieved that Plybus is nt dead because f him, but desn t want t g back t Crinth in case he marries his wn mther. The Oracle says that he shuld find the persn wh killed King Laius in rder t get rid f the plague. Oedipus sends fr the ne witness wh saw the murder. It s an ld shepherd. The ld shepherd wh saw King Laius being killed arrives. He was the ne wh gave baby Oedipus t the messenger in the first place. He tells them that Oedipus is King Lauis and Queen Jcasta s sn. Oedipus realises the predictin has cme true: the ld man he killed was his father and he has married his wn mther. He rushes ff in despair and rips ut his wn eyes; he is then left t wander, alne, in the cuntryside. A messenger tells us that Queen Jcasta has hanged herself. 6
