4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Unreal Condition IF Clause Not in Appropriate sentences (5-6 minutes) General Description: Unreal Conditional IF clause not is used in situations that are unreal or impossible. Unreal Conditional IF clauses are used in different situations given as examples below: Present Unreal Conditionals The first condition refers to an unreal situation in the present time. It is unreal because it is never going to happen or unlikely to be true. But even when it is in the present time, it uses the past tense of the verb in the IF clause and the verb be is always expressed as were whether the subject is singular or plural. Examples: If she were not the director, she would have more free time. (Unreal: She is the director) This is UNREAL or IMPOSSIBLE because she already IS the director. It is a situation that cannot be altered. If the actors weren t good, the audience would get bored. (Unreal: The actors are good) This is UNREAL or IMPOSSIBLE because the actors are already giving a good performance. Past Unreal Conditionals The second condition refers to an unreal situation in the past. It refers to something that did not happen in the past. This type of unreal conditional uses the past perfect tense in the IF clause. Examples: If I had not come with you to the theater, I never would have seen the play. (Unreal: I came to the theater) If he had not met the director, he would not have gotten acting job.. (Unreal: He met the director) Remember: If it is a present unreal conditional, use the past tense. If it is a past unreal condition, use the past perfect tense. Page 4
