8 UNIT 1: My Family and neighbor. READING ACTIVITY Four different titles are commonly used for women: Miss, Mrs., Ms., and ma'am. Using these titles appropriately is sometimes challenging. Titles for Women: Miss / Ms. / ma'am Use Miss with a complete name when you address a card, letter, etc. to a young girl: Miss Shannon Sparling Miss Teresita del Carmen Miss Tammy Kim Personal Titles for Men: Mr. In general American English speech, Mr. is used only with surnames (family names). In some dialects, Mr. is also used with given ("first") names, but this is not "standard practice." Say "Mr. Jones," not "Mr. Bill." Say "Mr. Vargas," not "Mr. José." 10 Between normally refers to something in the middle of two objects or things (or places). There are mountains between Chile and Argentina. The number 5 is between the number 4 and 6. There is a sea (The English Channel) between England and France. Across From / Opposite Across from and opposite mean the same thing. It usually refers to something being in front of something else BUT there is normally something between them like a street or table. It is similar to saying that someone (or a place) is on the other side of something. I live across from a supermarket (= it is on the other side of the road) The chess players sat opposite each other before they began their game. (= They are in front of each other and there is a table between them). We were told not to walk on the grass.

12 Professions background of my relatives A profession refers to an occupation that requires specialized education, knowledge, training and ethics. Although professionals make their living in what they do, this paid work is often more than just a job or occupation alone. Whether the occupation is law, medicine, plumbing, writing, interior design or baseball, those who are in it are expected to meet and maintain common standards. 14 UNIT 1: My Family and neighbor. I will be a soccer player Using will: "Will" often suggests that a speaker will do something voluntarily. A voluntary action is one the speaker offers to do for someone else. Often, we use "will" to respond to someone else's complaint or request for help. We also use "will" when we request that someone help us or volunteer to do something for us. Similarly, we use "will not" or "won't" when we refuse to voluntarily do something. FORM Will [will + verb] Examples: You will help him later. Will you help him later? You will not help him later. Will I be a doctor or a firefighter USE 1 "Will" to Express a Voluntary Action I will send you the information when I get it. USE 2 "Will" to Express a Promise I will call you when I arrive. I will be a famous soccer player when I grow up

15 Different with going to: Simple Future has two different forms in English: "will" and "be going to." Although the two forms can sometimes be used interchangeably, they often express two very different meanings. These different meanings might seem too abstract at first, but with time and practice, the differences will become clear. Both "will" and "be going to" refer to a specific time in the future. USE 3 "Be going to" to express a Plan. He is going to spend his vacation in Hawaii. USE 4 "Will" or "Be Going to" to Express a Prediction John Smith is going to be the next President.

Instructions: Students give some information about themselves without using a full sentence, e.g. two children. As the next stage up in difficulty, students can then do the same but go on to guess the whole true sentence for their partner, e.g. You were one of two children for the past, You have two children for the present, or You will have two children for the future. Yes / no questions can be formed using the word is / are or do / does. The most common type of yes / no question is formed by putting a to be verb (for example, is or are) at the beginning of a question. Making a Question with a To Be Verb Example (be-verb: IS) Statement Question Answers Elliot is reading a book. Is Elliot reading a book? Yes, he is. No, he isn't. Example (be-verb: ARE) Statement Question Answers They are from Greece. Are they from Greece? Yes, they are. No, they are not. Another common type of yes / no question is formed by adding do or does at the beginning of a sentence. The form of this kind of yes / no question is: Do / Does + subject +verb*

Grammar Inviting people to join you for dinner, social events, or other occasions is usually done using 'would like' to indicate the invitation. This form can be used for both formal and informal invitations. Remember that 'would you like...' is always followed by the infinitive form of the verb (to do).
