3 New Zealand Opera Tēnā koutou It is my very great privilege to present our 2019 programme. I am most grateful to my predecessor Stuart Maunder for his work in preparing this season, especially as it includes the opportunity for me to direct one of the greatest operas of the post-war period, Britten s The Turn of the Screw. First up, for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, we stage a scintillating production of Rossini s comic gem The Barber of Seville in June, July and August. This is a co-production with Opera Queensland and Seattle Opera. Lindy Hume s production, designed by Tracy Grant Lord with lighting by Matt Marshall, has already garnered rave reviews in Australia and the USA. We feature an international cast conducted by our Director of Music, Wyn Davies. Truly one of the funniest and zaniest operas ever written. The Turn of the Screw is a disturbing work. A chilling ghost story saturated with menace and based on the famous novella by Henry James. The production will premiere in October and is cast with New Zealand singers currently making their mark all over the world. It will also feature two school children in starring roles. This is also an opportunity for us to experience the talent of New Zealand conductor Holly Mathieson who will debut with the Company. As my first production for New Zealand Opera, I m relishing the opportunity to direct this work and collaborate with the exceptional creative team. In the intimacy of the ASB Waterfront Theatre in Auckland and The Opera House in Wellington, this will be a spine-chilling experience. And so to partnerships. In March we are supporting Auckland Arts Festival s presentation of the Komische Oper Berlin s production of The Magic Flute. Mozart s comic opera is completely reimagined by one of the most exciting directors working internationally today, Barrie Kosky. He teams up with the ingenious British theatre group 1927 to blend animated film and live action in an all-singing and all-dancing silentfilm musical. Otherwise known as a production of the opera The Magic Flute unlike any other seen before. In July we partner the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra to present a semi-staged concert performance of Mozart s Don Giovanni. An anti-hero or the last desperate gasp of the patriarchal ancien régime before it is swept away by revolution? Don Giovanni flouts the rules and is dragged down to Hell. Alongside our performances in theatres we have an extensive programme of activity in the community. Our Education and Outreach Team leads more than twenty different programmes that reach into every part of New Zealand life from schools and retirement communities to festivals and outdoor public events. This is opera at its most engaged and the feedback for these programmes is phenomenal. Overall, 2019 is a year of transition for New Zealand Opera as we work on a new artistic vision and purpose that will guide us from 2020 onwards. I am so proud of the spirit that brings life to this Company and delighted by the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people in my short time here. Dashing Count Almaviva is in love with the feisty young Rosina. But her guardian, Dr Bartolo, is determined to marry her himself. 7 New Zealand Opera The Turn of the Screw A chilling ghost story, saturated with menace. Benjamin Britten s haunting operatic version of Henry James s famous novella The Turn of the Screw. A young governess arrives at a remote country house to care for two children with only written instructions from their guardian, who advises not to disturb him. Before long a tapestry is woven of obsession, sexual awakening and the destruction of childhood. A narrative just ambivalent enough for us to project upon it our own fears. 10 2019 SEASON Education and Outreach We are committed to providing opportunities for New Zealanders to discover and participate in the world of opera. There are many ways you can connect with us, both at our place and out in the community. Connecting Children More than ten thousand children and their teachers welcomed our Opera in Schools tour into their primary and intermediate schools in From March, we ll be on the road again with our talented young singers, set, and costumes in tow. Contact us for details and information on how to book this engaging introduction to opera all in the comfort of your own school hall. Connecting Young People Through our Design Creative Workshops and Explore Opera Workshops, students are given the opportunity to explore technical and musical elements involved in presenting opera. Through our Ambassador Programme, nominated students can further develop their understanding of opera production and artistic career pathways by joining us backstage at the theatre. School groups are invited to book seats to attend our dress rehearsal in the theatre to experience how all the elements come together as we approach opening night. Connecting Communities Discover more about our productions through our free pre-performance talks offered at venues one hour before the curtain goes up. Join us at The Opera Centre for our Open Day. You ll experience a behind-the-scenes tour of the Wardrobe, Wigs and Make-up Departments and get to see what s happening in the rehearsal studio. Invite us to speak to your community group, or book a free tour of our Opera Centre if your group is keen to learn more about our fascinating art form. Audio-Described Performances We offer an audio-described performance for vision impaired patrons. Prior to this performance, join us for a guided on-stage touch tour to explore the set and costumes up close. 14 2019 SEASON New Zealand Opera (NZO) Terms of Sale 1. Tickets cannot be exchanged after purchase. NZO will not refund any tickets after purchase, except where NZO is required by law. 2. NZO may charge a fee to replace tickets. We reserve the right not to replace General Admission tickets or vouchers where we cannot verify your purchase or cannot cancel the issued ticket or voucher. 3. NZO may need to add, withdraw or replace any artist or performer, or amend the event programme, including date(s), venue, venue capacity and/or seating arrangements. Where possible, NZO will notify you in advance of significant changes. Please contact us with any questions about changes. Nothing in these terms alters or amends your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act and we will meet our obligations under the Consumer Guarantees Act. 4. NZO may refuse admission with reasonable cause. Late arrivals may be prevented from admission until a suitable break in the programme, if any. 5. Cameras and video recorders (film, digital or otherwise), audiotape recorders and all other recording devices may be prohibited at the event. 6. It may be a condition of entry to individual events that a search of person and/or their possessions will be required at the time of entry to the venue. If concerned, please consult the venue. 7. A ticket may not, without the prior written consent of NZO, be resold at a premium or used for advertising, promotion or other commercial purposes (including auctions, competitions and trade promotions) or to enhance the demand of other goods or services. If a ticket is sold or used in breach of this condition, the bearer of the ticket will be refused admission. 8. NZO reserves the right to refuse admission if valid identification for concession tickets is not provided. 9. Entry may be refused if tickets are lost, damaged or defaced in any way or are not purchased from NZO or other authorised points of sale. 10. Age restrictions may apply for some performances. Children must be actively supervised by an accompanying adult at all times. 11. NZO may take performance photographs or film for promotional and/or commercial purposes.
