1 2016 APF Solo Piano Competition Information and Application Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by April 11, 2016 Your application must contain the following: 1) A completed application form. 2) A high quality CD recording of the contestant s audition repertoire. 3) $25 application fee, by check or money order, made out to Austin Piano Festival. Eligibility: The competition is open to students in grades 7 through 12 living in the state of Texas who study primarily with a teacher in the state of Texas. No first place winners may compete in the same division in the year immediately following their award. The competition has two divisions: Division 2: Grades 7, 8, and 9 Division 1: Grades 10, 11, and 12 Repertoire requirements: All contestants must play 2 contrasting pieces of their choice from memory. There is a 15-minute time limit for all auditions. Contestants will be stopped if they exceed the time limit but will not be penalized. One movement is considered a piece. No more than 2 contrasting pieces are permitted. Audition CDs must include full recordings of a contestant s audition repertoire, even if it exceeds the 15-minute time limit. No changes may be made to the repertoire between the two rounds of the competition. Round 1 The first round of the competition is held via recorded audition. A high quality CD recording of the contestant s repertoire should be submitted along with the required audition materials. Round 2 Round 2 of the competition will be held in Austin, TX on May 7 th, 2016 at the Armstrong Community Music School. Competition time and details will be announced to those contestants who successfully pass the Round 1 CD auditions. 2 Prizes All entrants will receive a certificate of participation. Monetary prizes will be awarded as follows: Division I: Division II: First Prize: 300 First Prize: 200 Second Prize: 200 Second Prize: 100 Third Prize: 100 Third Prize: 50 Masterclass Participation: The top 3 prizewinners in each division will participate in masterclasses with distinguished artists and teachers at the 2016 Austin Piano Festival from May 27 th through June 5 th in Austin, TX. The judges may select additional masterclass participants from either division. Please see for up-to-date information on masterclass dates and locations. Festival Participation: Prizewinners must be available for participation in the Closing Gala Concert on June 5 th, If possible, masterclass participation will be assigned during this same weekend to winners outside of the Austin area to reduce travel time. Additional Rules and Regulations: 1) The APF Solo Piano Competition is limited to people at or under the age of 19 on August 1, 2016, and not yet enrolled in a college or university. 2) All selections must be performed by memory. 3) Only published solo piano works are permitted in the competition. 4) Each contestant in Round 2 should provide an unmarked score with measure numbers for each piece on the day of the competition. Photocopies are not allowed. Scores may not show any indication of identity of either the student or the student s teacher. No scores are required with Round 1 entries. 5) Competitors exceeding the 15-minute time limit will be stopped by not penalized. 6) If an application is accepted and the applicant withdraws or fails to compete, the application fee is not refundable. No refund will be made if a competitor forfeits his or her prize for any reason including disqualification or voluntary withdrawal. 7) The judges reserve the right to tie the first prize or not award a first prize in any division. In the event of a tie at any level, the prize money will be split between the two competitors. 8) All prizewinners and masterclass participants must provide a photograph and biography to the Austin Piano Festival. They agree that these materials may be posted online and reproduced in print under the auspices of the Austin Piano Festival and used in future advertisements and promotions. 9) All prizewinners must participate in the Austin Piano Festival Closing Gala on June 5 th, 2016 in Austin, TX. Failure to participate will lead to forfeit of the prize and all awards.

3 10) The directors of the Austin Piano Festival may not interfere in any way with the prize and award decisions of the judges. However, decisions regarding particular masterclass placement and festival performance opportunities may include the input and consent of festival directors. 11) No contestant, contestant s parent, or contestant s teacher may communicate with judges during the course of the competition. Doing so may result in disqualification. 12) The prize and award decisions of the judges are final in all rounds of the competition. 7 Parental/Guardian Consent Form This is to inform you of the possibility that your child s photo, video, audio, or biographical content may be published on the Austin Piano Festival s website as well as additional print media that report on events of the Austin Piano Festival. The purpose of this form is to require permission for your child s photo, images, or video and personally identifiable information to be published on the Austin Piano Festival website or other additional print media. This includes, but is not limited to, press releases and Austin Piano Festival promotions and advertising. When print, images, audio, or video are made public through print or the internet, we are unable to control who has access to, duplicates, or uses this information or media in any way. By law, we are required to ask permission to use or release any information, video, audio, or images related to your child. Pursuant to law, we will not release any personally identifiable information without prior written consent from you as parent or guardian. Personally identifiable information includes student names, photo or image or video, and grade in school.
