Progress Association President s Report... You may have seen on our Facebook page that I met with the local State MP Fraser Ellis and the Minister for Transport, Stephan Knoll the other day to view first hand our dangerous intersection at the entrance to Hardwicke Bay. The Progress Association has been advocating for an upgrade to the turn off for many years. Fraser has been trying for some time to assist us to get this intersection modified, so it was very pleasing to see the Transport Minister taking the time to come and view the intersection first hand. Although no guarantees were made, it is a positive sign that one day in the future we may get the upgrade to make it safer to turn off into our community. The Progress Association has decided to award life membership to those volunteers in our community that have served 10 years or more on the Committee (in whatever capacity). To that end, we would like to congratulate Geoff Rattley, Pauline MacPherson, Barbara Winter and Jim Fiege on their remarkable effort over the years. They will be presented with their awards at a special function early next month. The four of them have combined for well over 50 years worth of volunteering in our township a truly remarkable effort!!! Well done and thank you from all the community. Stand by for the pics in the next edition... The Annual Fishing competition at Easter is looking good. Please remember that the previous funding from Government that we once received for the last three events has now been rescinded completely, so the Progress Association has decided to go it alone. To that end, we are most grateful to all our sponsors for assisting with the prizes, cash and support. Please help us fund the community event (and hopefully make a profit!!) by purchasing raffle tickets, registering for the comp (on line regos are now open) and coming down to the hall for the presentations. 2 P a g e 2 Wood Sales The Hardwicke Bay Progress Association sells wood to raise funds for the community. With the cooler weather coming on now is the time to get your firewood for winter! Our hard working volunteers have sourced dry firewood and have been busy cutting it and splitting it ready for sales. Prices are as follows: 15kg bag (perfect for a night or two fires) - available from the shop $15 Bag of dried kindling available from the shop $10 HBPA trailer load (this trailer is a 7 x 5 with 18inch high sides) $140 Standard 6 x 4 trailer $100 Non standard loads (ie trailer with sides) price will be negotiated We can deliver locally dropped off but not stacked. We now have two small sheds to keep it dry and usually have stock on hand. It is best to either order it or ring a Committee member to arrange pick up or delivery. 3 P a g e 3 Broken Glass Menace by Graeme & Christina Ball In 1977 the South Australian Government introduced the Container Deposit Scheme, prior to this bottles were washed and reused, drinks manufacturers paid shopkeepers a small refund for the return of soft drink bottles and generic beer bottles, which shopkeepers in part passed on to their customers. With the advent of single use bottles, it became more economical for drink manufacturers to no longer offer a refund and it became the responsibility of the consumer to dispose of their glass bottles. In October 1966 the three local councils, Warooka, Minlaton and Yorketown approached local shopkeepers seeking their co-operation to not sell soft drink products in non-returnable bottles. Approached personally by the Council, storekeepers in the Warooka District have agreed to refrain from selling soft drinks in non-returnable bottles. The Council felt that the non-refundable soft drink bottles would aggravate the broken glass menace on beaches in the district as well as to add to the litter problem. SYP Pioneer, October 27, 1966 It is unknown if the other two council areas had such a warm response. Does this mean that the broken glass menace was more prevalent in the 1960s or was it the advent of broken glass marring the pristine beaches which prompted the councils to approach the shopkeepers? Would any council now consider approaching a business and making such a request and then also expect to receive a positive reply? Kerbside rubbish collection was introduced by the local councils in the late 1980s, followed many years later by the three-bin recycling system in October The four council areas of Warooka, Minlaton, Yorketown and Central Yorke Peninsula amalgamated on February 10th, Prior to this the town of Hardwicke Bay was divided by the Cutline into two council areas, Yorketown to the south and Minlaton north of the line. Bingo every Wednesday night with the At the hall... hall open from 7.00pm and Eyes Down from 7.30pm. Bar open (or BYO drinks and nibbles). Tea and coffee served during the interval. Plenty of prizes up for grabs and everyone is welcome! Morning Tea 10.00am every Monday (excluding Public Holidays) come along for a chat! Community Dinner every 2nd Saturday of the month. Join us for a chicken schnitzel for $6.00 plus we ask you bring a savoury or sweet plate to share. Arrive at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start to dinner. Bar open (or BYO drinks). Occasionally a special menu is offered (e.g. Asian) and cost may be higher. The December Saturday dinner is reserved as a Christmas Dinner with an extended menu and higher cost. At all dinners raffle tickets are sold and a members draw held (see drinks night for details.) Bookings are essential for catering, please indicate numbers attending on the Facebook event, progress@hardwickebay.org or add your details to the list located on the noticeboard outside the hall. Friday Night Drinks from 5pm, weekly raffle drawn, play pool or darts or just have a chat. Bar open (or BYO drinks) and bring nibbles to share. Lucky number draws. Members only draw, member must be present (jackpots $10 each week if member drawn not present to maximum of $200) Hall for hire do you have a function coming up? For $150 (ask about progress member discount) you can book the hall as your venue. See the webpage for details. Membership This is not only available to residents and property holders. Anyone who would like to become a member of our Association and participate in the abovementioned activities plus others arranged during each year, can do so by paying $20 to our Treasurer (progress@hardwickebay.org)

4 P a g e 4 YP Waste and Recycling Calendar... Hardwicke Bay is area two in the waste schedule (represented by the dark yellow dates for rubbish and recycling) and collection is on Wednesdays. Garden organics are scheduled monthly (represented by the dark green dates) and collected on Thursdays.
