2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The Nashville Film Festival amplifies our collective and individual awareness by bringing the world to Nashville to celebrate innovation, music and the many voices of the human spirit through the art of film.nashfilm serves our city. We provide a rich, diverse, and engaging arts experience that makes people feel proud to live here. Companies send their employees to NashFilm films. Why? Attending NashFilm is a highlight experience. People feel connected to each other, to the film industry, to issues and concerns presented in riveting documentaries, and to a larger world. They are uplifted through the art of film and music. NashFilm attracts more than 500 volunteers each year because they experience making a difference. NashFilm makes Nashville a better place to live. NashFilm serves at-risk youth through our "Livin' Reel" program. It is a hands-on filmmaking experience that in the past 15 years, has helped hundreds of impoverished teens find their voice and direction. NashFilm gives college students a place to screen films, volunteer, learn techniques, and meet professionals who can help them on their way. NashFilm serves Nashville's diverse community by giving a voice to their uniqueness and concerns. NashFilm has cultivated programs with the Black, Hispanic, LGBT, Kurdish, Asian, Jewish and senior communities. We screen films, host networking receptions, and provide an exciting venue for their community and beyond. NashFilm serves the greater Nashville arts community by providing an active marketplace. Past collaborations have included art by our homeless population at Room At The Inn, TACA, the Symphony and Ballet, to music by Nashville songwriters that will find its way into television programs and films, NashFilm is the meeting and marketplace they require. Finally, NashFilm serves Tennessee filmmakers and screenwriters with a way to establish their careers. Film festivals are vital for emerging filmmakers and NashFilm has become a festival of choice because of its reputation and reach. Background 2019 marks the 50th continuous festival produced by the Nashville Film Festival. It is celebrated as one of the top 10 and oldest film festivals in the United States. The Festival is held over 10 days every May. Primarily, NashFilm is a competition for filmmakers and screenwriters. Our film department narrows more than 7,000 entries from over 125 countries to a final list of about 300. Our screenwriting department will pull winning scripts from over 2,000 entries. Many of our films go on to the Cannes Film Festival, Sundance, and the Academy Awards. In fact, the Festival has been selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to qualify in all three Shorts categories -- meaning that our winners are automatic candidates for Academy Awards and more than 13 have gone on to win Oscars! We celebrate Tennessee films, film-makers, stories and artists with the Tennessee Spirit Award and the Horizon Awards. Each year we bring Hollywood to Nashville -- we have brought an impressive list of celebrities to the festival including Oprah Winfrey, Nicole Kidman, William Shatner and hundreds more. The Film Festival has successfully partnered with more than 90 business and arts organizations. It is an important instigator of awareness and growth as we bring challenging films and viewpoints together. We highlight films for Latino, Black, Kurdish and LGBT communities as well as at-risk youth with a program that involves teens in creating, acting in, and editing their own film, watching it on the big screens and walking the red carpet. With a strong commitment to independent and intelligent film, Nashville Film Festival gives its audiences a chance to see the work of amazing filmmaking talent and have an opportunity to ask questions in a Q & A session. With films crossing all genres from drama, comedy, animation, family, experimental, foreign, documentaries and short films, NashFilm may represent the only opportunity to see these films. The Film Festival has an outstanding board representing the music, film and business communities of Nashville. 2

3 Impact In our 50 years serving Nashville, NashFilm has become a cultural institution with an international reputation. We have: 1. expanded our reach - increased entries (more than 8,000), screened more films (more than 300), increased attendance (more than 40,000), increased strategic relations in our community to more than 90 businesses and organizations; 2. kept our expenses low through strict fiscal management; 3. shared resources with Nashville Public Television which also supplied our office space; 4) extended our reach to colleges and atrisk youth through two important programs. Goals for this year include: 1) greatly expand the visibility of the film festival 2.) represent the cultural diversity of Middle Tennessee in our volunteers, and films, focusing especially on the Chinese population, Latino, Black, and LGBT communities and At-Risk Youth 3.) Expand year-round programming through partnerships with area universities and organizations, and share the art of film around Tennessee using our outdoor theater. 4.) expand our year-round staff and deepen the knowledge of our professional staff through training. 5.) expand our screenwriting competition, launched in 2013, and our virtual reality competition launched in Needs In the last five years of its 50-year history, the Nashville Film Festival, has enjoyed a nearly 400% growth spurt. It is now recognized as one of the top film festivals in the world. It expanded to 10 days and 10 theaters in 2017, annually attracting 40,000 attendees. This growth brings with it tremendous pressure for the small year-round staff of just four people, and 50+ seasonal employees. NashFilm's first need is to generate enough revenue to allow for the addition of a project manager for our annual At-Risk Youth projects and a new development director. In addition, NashFilm needs to invest in the development of its current staff. They will be best served by making site visits to other film festivals during their events. They will explore ticketing options, member and sponsor benefit programs, marketing strategies, signage, party-plans and more. The ideas they gather will help expand NashFilm to even greater levels. As NashFilm develops in the near future, we envision a film, music and media festival and conference that helps cement the perception of Nashville as one of America's leading arts destinations. We will need staff and cutting-edge knowledge to get it done. Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer We welcome contributions, in-kind contributions, volunteers, and members. The Nashville Film Festival is a celebration of the art of film & music that challenge and inspire. One of the oldest film festivals in the country, this will be our 50th annual festival. The Nashville Film Festival is consistently ranked one of the top 10 film festivals in the U.S. Importantly, the festival receives more than 8,000 film, music, and script submissions annually, and screens more than 300 films making the rounds to Sundance, Cannes and the Academy Awards. Join film-makers, actors, musicians and film fans at an urban festival with Southern charm. Select members get discounts and access to the VIP tent. Contribute to help art and artists thrive in Nashville. Join volunteers who make the red carpet events happen. Our growth has been steady over the 50-year history, with our audience tripling in size between 2005 and NashFilm strives to create mutually beneficial partnerships and alliances with other organizations to further the benefits of arts education, creativity in the workplace, and the community as a whole. 7 Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success We monitor our success by:1. # of tickets sold2. Ticket revenue3. Attendance metrics: age, race, education, annual income4. Submission growth from year-to-year which is an indicator of our reputation in the film industry.5. The agents, film-buyers, music placements, script placements, and film sales we are able to achieve.6. The response from audiences rated on a 5 point Likert scale.7. The number of volunteers and what they say about their experience at the festival.8. Our memberships, how many are purchased, how many are repeat members, and what they say about their experience at the festival.9. The overall film quality.10.the number of major media that attend the festival. We are thrilled with one of our programs. Each year, for the past 15, we have provided a film-making program for at-risk youth called Livin' Reel. For the past two years, we worked with young women, age 15-17, from Youth Villages. These young women are at Youth Villages because they experience emotional and behavioral disorders, physical or sexual abuse, substance abuse or suicidal ideation or attempt. Eighty percent of Youth Villages children have multiple problems, which may include developmental or learning disabilities. The teens are supervised by their own staff, but the Nashville Film Festival brings in professional songwriters to write songs with them based on their experience, then produce a music video of the song, record it at a professional Nashville recording studio and finally, to premiere their film at the Nashville Film Festival. This program is well evaluated with surveys for students, program staff, and participating artists. Students report that it opens their eyes to what can be possible. Some have gone on to professional careers. 7

8 Livin' Reel, A film-making program for at-risk teens Description "Livin' Reel" provides a unique opportunity for at-risk youth to create a film from start to finish. They write it, plan its production, act in it, and engage with professionals all along the way. Finally, they present their film and answer questions about it at the Nashville Film Festival. Teens walk the red carpet, participate in a Q&A and participate in a reception. NashFilm works with Youth Villages, the Martha O'Bryan, Preston Taylor YMCA/B&G Club, Stratford HS and Williamson County ALS. The creative process changes how teens see themselves and their futures. They learn skills such as working as a team, conflict resolution, film technical aspects, learning to be heard, to writing, memorizing, being on time and doing their part in order for the project to move forward. Budget Category Population Served Short Term Success Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Artists-in-Residence At-Risk Populations, Adolescents Only (13-19 years), For the past two years, we worked with young women, age 15-17, from Youth Villages. These young women are at Youth Villages because they experience emotional and behavioral disorders, physical or sexual abuse, substance abuse or suicidal ideation or attempt. Eighty percent of Youth Villages children have multiple problems, which may include developmental or learning disabilities. This program is well evaluated with surveys for students, program staff, and participating artists. Students report that it opens their eyes to what can be possible. Some have gone on to professional careers. Long term Success This program has been consistently delivered as part of the festival for 15 years. Over time Livin' Reel has served at-risk teens in a variety of settings, including the Oasis Center and Youth Villages. Each year we partner teens with professional filmmakers and songwriters to create an original piece of music and film which is screened before audiences of their peers. Over time, we have provided nearly 500 at-risk teens with a once in a lifetime experience. Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Success is monitored in several ways: We conduct surveys of our participants. 1. The experience of the teens. Do they attend over the course of the program? Are they engaged? Do they like it at the end? Did they learn something important to them? Something new?2. The experience of the staff. Do they want to do this program again? Do they believe this program was of value? 3. The experience of the artists. Did they enjoy the experience? Will they do it again? Is it meaningful to them?4. The outcome: How successful was the song and music video? Did the audience like it? Did the students take it back to their friends and share it with pride? How was the film ranked by the audience that saw it? Four years ago we had a young man really take charge of his experience. He worked hard on the song and recording. He was interviewed on WFSK radio, from Fisk University. He went on to write more songs and has become a young professional Hip-Hop artist. 8

9 Nashville Diversity Film Program Description Nashville Film Festival invites and selects important films of interest to specific communities. We shine a light on Tennessee, Black, Latino, GBLT, and Kurdish films, issues, visions and filmmakers with minifestivals within NashFilm. Each program segment is created with a partnering community organization and highlighted in our printed program. Festival audiences have the opportunity to talk with many of the filmmakers about his or her experience in a Q&A session. The program has gained international attention. In 2013, the Iraq Ministry of Arts sent a contingent of Kurdish filmmakers and 9 Kurdish films to NashFilm. The program included dignitaries from Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq, local Kurdish representatives as well as Nashville and Tennessee elected officials and dignitaries. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also partnered with NashFilm for the program. In 2015, 2016, & 2017, NashFilm brought over 10 Chinese filmmakers and investors to Nashville. This is the beginning of a new international exchange between China and Nashville. The goal is to increase understanding and tolerance through awareness and dialogue. Budget Category Population Served Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Cultural Festivals, Adults, Partner School and University Programs Description NashFilm Community Outreach Program helps local education and artsbased nonprofits create challenging programming using films that have screened or showcased at NashFilm. The films are often challenging documentaries that bring untold stories to life, in the area of the humanities. They focus on issues of race, gun violence, drug addiction, return from incarceration, racism in the U.S. and so on. The multi-year partnership with Lipscomb, NPT and the Public Libraries is an example of this success. Taking place in the spring every year, it is the longest-running film festival in the South and the third-longest running in the country, providing a vital forum for aspiring and established filmmakers as well as giving our community the opportunity to see films otherwise not seen in theaters. This extraordinary wealth of film resources provides film and educational programs throughout the year to under-served and diverse communities. Our at-risk "Livin' Reel" program is our most-successful teen outreach project. NashFilm, now, has over 8,000 entries putting it in the top tier among film festivals worldwide. The competition is steep. Only 300 films get a screening at NashFilm, and winning a category at NashFilm, is important for any filmmaker's resume. The Nashville Film Festival is an Academy Award Qualifying Event, meaning short films who win at NashFilm are automatically given Oscar consideration. More than 14 NashFilm short film winners have gone on to win Oscars. We have successfully weathered the current economic slowdown by providing a system for accountability to the budget, and soliciting and receiving more financial support from grants and foundations as well as corporate sponsors. We continue to grow our membership. With ongoing systems and accountability now in place, the organization of Nashville Film Festival is stronger than ever before. We are continuing our outreach community programs with the Livin' Reel At-Risk youth project, which has included partnerships with the Martha O'Bryan Center, Youth Villages, Preston Taylor Boys and Girls Club and Williamson County Alternative Learning Center (Juvenile Delinquents). We have evaluated and made changes to our box office system and publicity partner and are maintaining the growth of the annual film festival. As our national profile continues to grow we were named One of 25 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee by MovieMaker Magazine, profiled for our Film Festival in Film Festival Today (Sundance Edition) as well as recognized as one of 26 film festivals from around the world for BEST FILM FESTIVAL PRIZES we look forward to exciting and challenging times ahead. Our call for entries was the highest at over 8,000 and attendance was over 40,
