2 Port shorts festival growth The 2016 Port Shorts Film Festival experienced significant growth in filmmaker entries and audience attendance. The 2016 Port Shorts Film Festival attracted 132 entries from around the region and the world, up from 113 in There were 24 finalist films screened at the Port Shorts Young Filmmakers Awards on Friday October 28 and 28 Local and Open category finalist films screened at the Port Shorts Film Festival on Saturday October 29. Finalist filmmakers ranged from first-time enthusiasts to an Academy Award-winning director. Our Saturday night audience of 462 people was a 23 per cent increase on 2015 while our Friday night audience of 221 people increased 12 per cent on Out of 434 tickets sold online, 27 per cent (116 in total) of ticketholders resided outside the Douglas Shire. Port Shorts anticipates similar growth in filmmaker entries and audience attendance in 2017 as the festival s reputation grows.

The 2017 Port Shorts Film Festival was officially launched this month by Ambassadors Stephen Curry and Matt Hearn supported with a comprehensive media campaign that incorporates all of these channels. We also have a dedicated social media following, hundreds of e-newsletter subscribers and links with dozens of film schools and film agencies throughout Australia. In 2016, with the support of Festivals Australia, the Port Shorts Masterclass Series delivered three days of intense and entertaining workshops for around 200 high school and adult emerging filmmakers. click on the images to see some of the highlights of the 2016 port shorts masterclass series Port Shorts Ambassadors Stephen Curry, Matt Hearn and Kier Shorey were joined by Screen Queensland and New York Film Academy Australia to give emerging filmmakers insights into what is required to be successful in the industry. In 2017 we are upping the ante with the increased support from Festivals Australia. For the 2017 Port Shorts Masterclass Series to be held from October 25-27, our Ambassadors will be joined by actor Peter Phelps (The Square; Stingers), cinematographer and ACS Victoria president Warwick Field, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 drone operator Stephen Oh, acclaimed music video director/producer Natasha Pincus (Gotye, Powderfinger), stunt coordinator Lawrence Woodward (Mad Max 4: Fury Road), Kite Fish Film s Karen Jones (The Pacific, Fool s Gold) and Australian Teachers of Media to deliver a supersized Masterclass Series of workshops. 7 2017 festival bigger, longer, louder More than $12,000 in cash and prizes is up for grabs for filmmakers at the bigger, longer, louder 2017 Port Shorts Film Festival. The better, tastier, shinier version of the Port Shorts Film Festival is more accessible with the time limit for the $5000 major prize extended from seven minutes to 10 minutes and a new Port Shorts Music Video Awards category introduced. For the first time since the Port Shorts Film Festival originated more than 15 years ago, the theme for the Local Filmmakers category has been scrapped so filmmakers from Cairns to Cooktown can tell any story they want any way they wish in four minutes. The Port Shorts Local Filmmaker Awards and the Port Shorts Open Filmmaker Awards will be showcased on Friday October 27, with the Port Shorts Young Filmmakers Awards and the Port Shorts Music Videos finalists to screen on Saturday October 28. 8 JOIN the port shorts crew The Port Shorts Film Festival, the Port Shorts Masterclass Series and the Port Shorts Emerging Filmmakers On Set program is delivered by a small band of dedicated volunteers. We contribute hundreds of volunteer hours each year to bring otherwise impossible opportunities to filmmakers and audiences in Far North Queensland. While we may be small in number, we re big on enthusiasm and expertise in film production, education, design, media and marketing and event management skills. Our Port Shorts Ambassadors Stephen Curry, Matt Hearn and Kier Shorey have also become part of the Port Shorts Inc family and donate a considerable amount of time and effort throughout the year to share their knowledge with emerging filmmakers. But there is no way we could deliver a national short film festival, Masterclass workshops and a work experience program without the support of our partners and sponsors. All the best intentions in the world would deliver nothing for filmmakers and audiences without the support of our festival partners and sponsors who motivate us to contribute the time and skills required to make the festival a success.
