In cooperation with the Palm Beach International Film Festival Student Showcase of Films Would you like to shoot your very own movie on a multi-million-dollar Sound Stage on the back lot of a real motion picture studio? No experience in filmmaking is necessary! We ll show you how! And it is free! All you need is your cell phone, some friends to work with, and your own imagination! If you are a 6th, 7th or 8th grade student, you and your friends will be shown how to write your own script and shoot your own movie on film sets already built for you! And, you ll do it all in one day on Saturday, October 28 th! Your film will be entered into the G-Star Studios! There will be a Red Carpet Awards Ceremony! Awards will be given in several filmmaking categories! The Palm Beach International Film Festival Student Showcase of Films will honor and show the "Best Film"! All of the young filmmakers will receive a FREE TICKET to the X-Scream Halloween Event, the premier haunted house in Palm Beach County! You can write your own comedy, drama, zombie movie, super hero movie, or anything else you wish to create aided by student mentors from the G-Star School of the Arts for Film, Animation and Performing Arts. You will be shooting at the G-Star Studios which is South Florida s largest professional movie studio. It also houses the third largest Halloween Haunt Event in Florida, next to Universal Studios and Busch Gardens, known as X-Scream Halloween. Tremendous movie sets have been built in the G-Star Studios Sound Stage for Monsters, Myths & Mayhem set in a dark forest of fantasy! Nowhere else in the world will middle school students have the chance to film their very own movie in a real movie studio! Important note! 2 G-Star Studios For Middle School Students! Here is how it works: *** STUDENTS! PLEASE READ ALL THE FOLLOWING INSTUCTIONS CAREFULLY AND SHOW THEM TO YOUR PARENTS! *** Hello Middle School Filmmaker! By registering you have been accepted as a Filmmaker and as a Production Company (make up a name for your production company such as Raven Films, etc.) into The Cell Phone Film Festival for Middle School Students Presented by G-Star Studios, the largest motion picture studios in south Florida. Address of the Event: G-Star Studios & School of the Arts 2030 Congress Ave Palm Springs, FL (3 blocks south of Forest Hill Blvd on South Congress Ave.) STEPS TO FOLLOW: I. READ & AGREE TO THE RULES - See Page 5 or online at II. III. CHOOSE YOUR TEAMMATES & REGISTER AT COME TO THE FILM SHOOT A. WHEN: Saturday, October 28 th from 9 AM to 3 PM. B. WHERE: G-Star Studios Sound Stage G-Star School of the Arts, 2030 S. Congress Ave., Palm Springs, FL (three blocks south of Forest Hill Blvd. on S. Congress Ave.) NOTE: You must bring a parent or guardian to sign you in, attend orientation, and pick you up. Parents and guardians are welcome to stay the entire day to watch the shoot, but may not participate, manage or interact with the students during the shoot. C. Participants are encouraged to take as many behind the scenes photos as you like and post them on social media. You will be given your free X-Scream Halloween tickets.

You will be assigned a G-Star School Mentor and then take a guided tour through the OVER FORTY MOVIE SETS and SEVEN LOCATIONS ON THE BACK LOT while being given hands-on instructions in STORY WRITING as well as EDITING. Finally, you will be given a lesson in How to Write a Script to the Location. It is during this process you will pick your locations for the scenes in your movie. (See Page 4 of this document to get started) E. You will then WRITE YOUR STORY for your one, two or three minute film. F. The young filmmakers will be assigned their SHOOTING SCHEDULE for the day. G. SHOOT YOUR FILM on the G-Star Studios Sound Stage One and Back Lot Locations according to your shooting schedule. H. Free pizza lunch will be served. You may bring your own lunch. IV. EDIT & SUBMIT I. START EDITING Immediately. You have 3 weeks to complete editing your film before final submission. J. FINAL SUBMISSION DATE: November 14 th K. To submit your video: L. 4 For Middle School Students! How to Shoot your Production: There are three production phases of every film. They are Pre-Production (write the story), Production (shoot the movie), and Post Production (edit the movie). STARTING TODAY you and your production company are officially now in Pre-Production, one of the most important phases of any film project. In Pre-Production this is where you: 1. Bring your cast & crew together (your production team), name your production company, and assign who will be the Director, Camera Person, and Actors. 2. Together you will develop and write down your idea for your film. All films will be from one to three minutes. How to write your story: Every film story has three elements: A beginning, a middle, and an end. The Beginning is the setup of the story. It should present to the audience a problem or situation that will intrigue the audience to want to see the whole story and its resolution. The Middle is the action, and the Ending is the resolution (how does it end?). Here is an example of a film story: Beginning: A young girl is very scared trying to hide inside a dark old building with old movie sets. We don t know why or how she got there. Her cell phone is dead. Middle: A boy is looking for her. He is evil. He can t see her. He yells out, I know your phone is dead and so are you! Too bad you saw me do what I did. A series of camera shots show him searching with his cell phone light on trying to find her. We see her continue to be in total fear of him. End: The camera point of view (POV) shows just the boy s legs from the knees down from the front as her legs (POV from knees down) appear behind him. We hear a hard Thump and the boy crumples to the ground. We see her behind him holding a board that she hit him over the head with. She drops the board, crying, she picks up his cell phone and calls, Mom, I need help! ~ The End ~ As you can see, you do not need a complicated script. A story description as shown above is known as a Treatment. When your film is in Production it can be shot following the Treatment as the Director directs the actors and the camera angles on set. 5 For Middle School Students! JUDGES & RULES JUDGES Bobby Moresco Academy Award (Oscar) Winner for Co-writer and Producer of CRASH and Million Dollar Baby (both won Best Picture Oscars). Jeff Davis Producer of Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise (film and Broadway show), Legally Blonde on Broadway, Jersey Boys directed by Clint Eastwood (film and Broadway show). Dick Arlette Producer: The Today Show, Wings on NBC (Creator & Producer), ABC World Series of Auto Racing, Bob Hope Specials. Arthur Bernstein Writer and Producer of Walt Before Mickey, Executive Producer of three soon to be released films: American Brawler, Swing State, New Life. RULES 1. All rules must be followed. Not following the rules will result in your group not being allowed to shoot your film. 2. All students will be dressed age appropriate (no revealing clothing, mini-skirts, etc.). Costumes permitted, but must follow the same rule. No sandals, flip-flops or high heels unless needed by the actors (they are dangerous on the set). For safety, you must wear closed toe and heel shoes (sneakers recommended). 3. All guns or knives to be used as props must be fake toys. No real guns, knives, or any kind of real weapon allowed. 4. No profanity, nudity, vulgarity or sexual scenes in the movie or on set allowed. Blood, cuts, horrortype makeup, etc. are permitted. No use of profanity by the film crew. Using profanity will be grounds for dismissal from the. You will be sent home. 5. You must respect your cast & crew and the other production companies. Set etiquette will be in place at all times. When QUIET ON THE SET is shouted, you MUST stop, be quiet, and wait for the other film to shoot their scene until you hear CUT! 6. No horseplay or fooling around or playing with friends while on the set. 7. No use of cell phones for personal use while on set. 8. No wandering off away from your film crew. You must ask permission to go to the store next door to the movie studios and you will only be allowed to go with two friends at a time. 9. We encourage you to take your own Behind-The-Scenes photos and send them out to all your social media to show your friends where you are and what you are doing. 10. Lastly, much of filmmaking requires PATIENCE. Use your down time to rehearse your scenes or improve your story.
