11 120 BPM (Beats Per Minute) 120 battements par minute Preview: Sunday 1 April (16.00) Friday 6 - Thursday 12 April Revisiting elements of his own experience, Robin Campillo has created a bustling fresco of the personalities and politics of the ACT UP Paris LGBTQI community during the 1990s. We follow hot-headed Sean (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) as he falls under the spell of gravely handsome newcomer Nathan (Arnaud Valois). A moving, lump-in-the-throat love story is matched by a celebration of the power of activism to awaken an indifferent world in this superb drama. Both sides seem to be hiding something, and with accusations of violence, the judge must decide whether or not to give a seemingly repentant Antoine the benefit of the doubt. 16 CINEMASTERS: WES ANDERSON Wes Anderson is a singular filmmaker; his precise vision, detached humour and particular style are unmistakable. One viewing arguably isn t enough to take in everything contained across the many layers of his intricately-constructed stories, and their idiosyncratic characters. As his new film Isle of Dogs goes on general release, we are delighted to take the opportunity to revisit five of his earlier works. Join us on a tour of Wes world. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. Rushmore Tuesday 10 April (20.50) Wes Anderson s breakthrough sophomore feature stars Jason Schwartzman as Max Fischer, an eccentric 15-year-old student at Rushmore Academy, who, despite seeing himself as the king of the campus by engaging in a plethora of extracurricular activity, is also one of the least scholarly students at the school. Max s life changes when he finds himself both on academic probation and in love with elementary teacher Miss Cross, at odds with wealthy industrialist Herman Blume. When released in 1998, the winning performances, witty script and fantastic soundtrack marked Anderson as one of the most distinct voices of his generation. All tickets 6. Director Wes Anderson Cast Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Olivia Williams, USA 1998, 1h33m, 15 Take 2: Fantastic Mr Fox Saturday 14 April (11.30) Based on Roald Dahl's classic book, Wes Anderson s film is full of deadpan banter and clever silliness. After 12 years of bucolic bliss, urbane Mr Fox, breaks a promise to his wife and returns to his farm raiding ways. Giving in to his animal instincts endangers not only his marriage but also the lives of his family and their animal friends. When the human farmers force Mr Fox and company deep underground, he has to resort to his natural craftiness to rise above the opposition and use all of his wiles to survive the farmers retaliation. 17 The Royal Tenenbaums Tuesday 17 April (20.15) Royal Tenenbaum and his wife Etheline had three children; Chas, Richie and Margot, and then they separated. Chas started buying real estate in his early teens and had an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot was a playwright and received a grant of fifty thousand dollars in the ninth grade. Richie was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure and disaster. This is the story of their unexpected reunion one winter. Director Wes Anderson Cast Gene Hackman, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, USA 2001, 1h50m, 15 The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Tuesday 24 April (20.20) Internationally famous oceanographer Steve Zissou and his crew (Team Zissou) set sail on an expedition to hunt down the mysterious, elusive, possibly non-existent Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou's partner during the documentary filming of their latest adventure. They are joined on their voyage by a young airline co-pilot who may or may not be Zissou's son, a beautiful journalist assigned to write a profile of Zissou, and Zissou's estranged wife and co-producer Eleanor. One of Anderson s most fanciful and iconic films, combining stop-motion and life action, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou demonstrates once again his aptitude at handling ensemble casts. Director Wes Anderson Cast Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, USA 2004, 1h58m, 15 The Grand Budapest Hotel Tuesday 1 May (20.45) Opening Gala at the 2014 Glasgow Film Festival, The Grand Budapest Hotel sees Ralph Fiennes head up an all-star cast. Fiennes stars as the legendary concierge Gustave who befriends lobby boy Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), when the disputed ownership of priceless Renaissance painting Boy With Apple threatens to escalate into an international scandal. Love, death, fractured families, surrogate fathers and broken hearts are all part of the riotous mix in a perfect blend of style, substance and unforgettable characters. GFF18 Director Kathleen Hepburn Cast Shirley Henderson, Mary Galloway, Nicholas Campbell, Canada 2017, 1h50m, 15 Cool Hand Luke Sunday 22 April (12.30) - FREE An Oscar-nominated Paul Newman plays the ultimate rebel in this gritty, compelling prison drama. After a drunken spree, Luke Jackson is sentenced to two years on a brutal Florida chain gang. He refuses to accept the authority of his gaolers or the rigid pecking order among his fellow prisoners. Luke endures through physical hardship and psychological warfare in a stirring tribute to the unquenchable spirit of a Christ-like figure. Each film will be preceded by a short introduction and followed by an accessible and informal post-screening talk by James Mooney, lecturer in film and philosophy and Director for Access and Outreach at the University of Edinburgh s Centre for Open Learning. 29 NT Live: Macbeth Thursday 10 May (18.45) Shakespeare s most intense and terrifying tragedy, directed by Rufus Norris (The Threepenny Opera, London Road), will see Rory Kinnear (Young Marx, Othello) and Anne-Marie Duff (Oil, Suffragette) return to the National Theatre to play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The ruined aftermath of a bloody civil war. Ruthlessly fighting to survive, the Macbeths are propelled towards the crown by forces of elemental darkness. While Albrecht grieves, she returns from the dead as a Wili, a vengeful spirit meant to make unfaithful men dance until death Prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova personifies this ultimate ballerina role in the classical repertoire, alongside the sensational Sergei Polunin as Albrecht, in this chilling, yet luminous ballet that continues to captivate audiences for over 150 years at the Bolshoi. Choreographer Yuri Grigorovich, 3h30m approx. N/C 12+ Bolshoi Ballet: Coppélia Sunday 10 June (15.45) Swanhilda notices her fiancee Franz is infatuated with the beautiful Coppélia who sits reading on her balcony each day. The company s stunning corps de ballet shines in the divertissements and famous dance of the hours, and its principals abound in youthful energy and irresistible humor in this effervescent production.
