1 52 N. York St., 2nd Floor, Elmhurst, IL 6026 historictheatres.org Finding Aid for the THS MAGAZINE COLLECTION Acc No.: none Future Additions Expected: Yes Finding Aid creation: March 8, 206 Size: Approximately 4 five inch magazine boxes measuring 47.5 linear feet Abstract The THS Magazine Collection consists of approximately 47.5 linear feet of magazines. The collection contains over 4,900 individual issues from 279 separate titles. Background Information The Theatre Historical Society of America was founded in 969 to promote the legacy of America s historic theatres and insure the documentation of the architectural, cultural and social history of those theatres. Early archive materials were collected by members and kept in separate locations. Over time the collections were brought to one location and combined. From these initial collections the materials were organized and separated into several different collections. Records detailing histories of specific theatres were labeled the Theatre File, materials containing information on theatre mechanics, cinema chains, architects, THS members, vaudeville circuits, among other topics became the Subject Files, Photos that were used in the publication of THS quarterly magazine, Marquee were gathered into the Editor s Collection, photographic slides, postcards, and negatives became the THS Slide Collection, THS Postcard Collection, and THS Negative Collection respectively. These collections came from THS members and donations made throughout the organization s history. The Magazine Collection is comprised of titles that THS has subscribed to throughout the organization s history related to its mission. Additionally the collection contains individual issues that have been collected or donated or contain articles related to theatre operation, architecture, technology, or other similar topics. The collection does not include Marquee, which has been published by THS since 969. Scope and Contents Note The Magazine Collection 488 individual issues of 279 separate titles. The collection dates back to the end of the 9 th century and consists of titles we are currently subscribed to. Stored in five inch wide magazine boxes the collection takes up 4 boxes spreading out over 47.5 linear feet. Other materials in the Theatre Historical Society holdings may relate to the topics in this archive. Consult the archivist for further research assistance. Access Restrictions: There are no access restrictions on the materials and the Collection is open to all. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming to the laws of libel, privacy and copyright which may be involved in the use of this Collection.
