1 ! Equity Apprentice Stage Manager Advisors The apprenticeship program is an important and positive part of the learning process for emerging Equity stage managers. But it can also be difficult, and filled with frustration in some instances. At times, apprentices may feel out of the loop and have no one to talk to about issues, other than the person with whom they are apprenticing. Equity's SM Committee has put together a roster of apprentice advisors to bridge this gap. The following is a list of members in good standing within each region, whom apprentices may contact with basic questions about Equity, our scale agreements and engagement policies (generally), or stage management as a career. These people have offered to share their experience working in a professional environment, so that your apprenticeship experience may be the best possible. Here is what you can (and cannot) expect of this programme: Advisors may not get in the way of your relationship with your current stage manager. Every stage manager s approach to a show is different, and you have to work within that your advisor is available to provide the benefit of his or her experience, not to advocate or intervene. Advisors are not expected to be an ongoing mentor throughout an apprenticeship, although that doesn t mean you can t contact them twice. They are experienced people to whom you can reach out for advice and ideas. You may contact any advisor you think might be of assistance, but please recognise that they are all volunteering their time. Don t expect next-minute advice, and please respect the fact that the advisors probably have a paid job (or a life!) they have to take care of, too. If the question has to do with any of the clauses in the multitude of CAEA s agreements, or membership, or apprenticeship credits, or the like, you will likely be referred to one of the Equity offices for assistance. Equity and the SM Committee do not specifically endorse anyone on this list, nor his or her qualification to advise on any specific matter. What the advisors can offer is an experienced perspective, and perhaps some advice. Take or leave it, as you see fit. If you have comments about accessing this programme, wish to join the advisory team, or need more information, please let us know at: caea.sm.committee@gmail.com Allan Teichman Stage Management Committee Liaison Page 1
