2 EDUCATION AT THE FESTIVAL RETURNING TO AUCKLAND! Rialto Cinemas Newmarket: 19 Feb - 8 March 2015 Berkeley Cinemas Takapuna: 20 Feb - 8 March 2015 Learning a foreign language not only reveals how other societies think and feel, what they have experienced and value, and how they express themselves, it also provides a cultural mirror in which we can more clearly see our own society. - CHANCELLOR EDWARD LEE GORUSCH
3 THE FESTIVAL 2015 Proudly sponsored by L Oréal Paris, the Alliance Française French Film Festival has firmly established itself as the largest French cultural event in New Zealand and as a prestigious event on the national cultural calendar. It is one of the largest French festivals outside of France in the entire world and a diverse showcase of the best of contemporary French language cinema, brought directly to cinema screens in eleven cities around the country features another ambitious film selection with a mixture of hard-hitting drama and comedy, alongside spectacular animation and a special category to commemorate the centenary of World War One. The full film selection will be available via cinemas and the festival website on 29 January New Zealanders have illustrated a love affair with French cinema and we are proud to continue bringing you the very best France has to offer. THE ALLIANCE FRANçAISE The Alliance Française is a worldwide, non-profit network of associations dedicated to the promotion of French language and culture. The first Alliance Française was founded in Paris in 1883 and it has been active in New Zealand for 118 years. There are now nearly 1,000 Alliance Française organisations worldwide including 10 in New Zealand, which all offer social as well as cultural activities with 7 of them (in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Nelson, Palmerston North and Wellington) also providing French language classes. The Alliance Française maintains strong ties and implements quality cooperation with cultural and educational local institutions. They work closely with the Cultural Service of the French Embassy to schedule linguistic and artistic programming. BECOME A MEMBER AT YOUR LOCAL ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE! MOOMINS ON THE RIVIERA - LES MOOMINS SUR LA RIVIERA DIRECTOR: Xavier Picard VOICES OF: Emmanuel Garijo, Céline Ronté, Pascal Casanova DURATION: 80 minutes RATING: NZ rating TBC This is a beautifully created, quaint and lovely little film, filled with humour and charm. - The Gizzle Review The Moomins, along with Little My and Snorkmaiden, head on a sea journey that after storms and desert island dangers leads the family to Riviera, the place that takes their unity to the test. Based on the award-winning comic strip of the same name. GRAND ILLUSION - LA GRANDE ILLUSION DIRECTOR: Jean Renoir CAST: Jean Gabin, Dita Parlo, Pierre Fresnay, Eric von Stroheim DURATION: 95 minutes RATING: G An optimistic, elegiac tragedy, looking at the great war and the crucial changes it wrought. - The Guardian SUITABLE FOR HIGH SCHOOL/ UNI STUDENTS A timeless classic about two French soldiers who are captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp during WWI. Several escape attempts follow until they are sent to a seemingly impenetrable fortress from which escape seems impossible. At the time of publication, some of these films have not yet been rated. Please enquire at education@frenchfilmfestival.co.nz if you have any questions relating to the content of the films.
6 YOUR PATH TO BECOMING A GLOBAL CITIZEN STARTS HERE... Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going. - RITA MAE BROWN In our increasingly globalised world learning languages is important for many reasons it expands cultural horizons, breaks down barriers and increases opportunities for young people interested in living or working abroad. In addition, studies have shown that studying a foreign language can improve memory, brain power and use of English. The study of foreign language is a key element of broadening perspectives and setting students upon the path to becoming global citizens. Film is a powerful tool in assisting students to learn a language. As a medium it has the power to inspire, fascinate and educate, helping to make a foreign language more accessible, and the learning of it more enjoyable. REASONS TO ATTEND Reasons to attend films at the Alliance Française French Film Festival 2015: Detailed course outlines for all Education Outreach films will be available to download free of charge from the official festival website from 29 January These outlines will provide a framework for how further learning can take place. Exposes students to French language in context and real-life conversations, and increases their ability to cope with accents. Provokes discussion, assisting students to develop critical thinking and language skills. Foreign film is a powerful catalyst to facilitate discussions, to teach international events, global finance, cross-cultural affairs and multi-disciplinary subjects. Offers diverse cultural experiences through a wide range of films and genres. Ensures learning is enjoyable, and extended outside the classroom. Creates immediate and culturally relevant context for French language study in New Zealand, linking schools and universities with the wider community.
