2 Welcome to the 2017/18 Season at Lyceum Theatre Oldham. With so much going on in the world, we've chosen to celebrate a Season of British Comedy, with five very different plays - plays set in different time periods, with very different cast and characters, to give lots of people a chance to perform on our stage. We also wanted to challenge ourselves to create lots of different worlds so have chosen plays with different set construction, lighting, sound and props to stretch and show off Lyceum Theatre Oldham's excellent strengths in these areas. In the next couple of years, the cultural landscape of Oldham will change dramatically and we want to remain a big part of that. We're already part of the Cultural Quarter and our plans to refurbish our Front of House areas to bring them up to the level of our auditorium will help put us on the map. We hope to make this journey with you, our audiences and welcome any help and feedback you want to give. See page 10 for details of volunteering. 4 One for the Road By Willy Russell Friday 22 September - Saturday 30 September pm (no performance Sunday 24 September) We open our new season with a comedy about social climbing, set in the 1980s, when everyone wanted to escape their working class roots Everyone, that is, except Dennis Cain, whose life is defined by garden gnomes, John Denver records, Tupperware and poshed-up cottage pie. And he thinks he s the only one who wants to get out! Set on Phase Two of a northern housing estate, this hilarious, quick-witted comedy is an early work by Willy Russell, who went on to write Educating Rita and Blood Brothers. Best known as the Ealing Comedy (and a challenge for our clever setbuilders), Linehan s drama is set in the rickety house of a sweet old lady who inadvertently takes in a gang of inept criminal misfits, then finds herself implicated, then innocently comes out on top, despite her best intentions! Slapstick humour and larger than life characters have made this classic film into the perfect stage play, adapted by Graham Linehan, creator of Father Ted and The IT Crowd. Shy, virginal Percy has been tricked into going home with a prostitute on his final night in London, after watching the Cup Final. During a night of talking, both Percy and Cyrenne share their vulnerabilities and decide to stay together but then dawn arrives and reality returns. This one is a corker! With fur coats, mixups, mistresses and scantily clad ladies the play twists and turns until you don't know who's going behind whose back. It might not be strictly PC but we can guarantee a good night out and a true celebration of the quirky and the belly-laugh. Cooney and Chapman are true masters of this genre. We do everything from choosing the plays to selling the coffees, from showing people to their seats to building sets. It takes a lot of people with a lot of different skills. We all have one thing in common. We love theatre, especially Lyceum Theatre Oldham. People volunteer for different reasons some people want to help the local community, some want to spend time with likeminded people and others want to learn new skills or pass on their own skills to others.
