2 WELCOME Welcome to Tyneside Cinema, an award-winning independent cinema and arts venue based in Newcastle city centre. Our schools programme offers exciting opportunities to engage students in film intellectually, verbally and physically. We provide opportunities to use film as a vehicle to explore different subjects in a fun and creative way, building students interest and confidence. Schools activities take place at our Pop-Up Film School just across the road from Tyneside Cinema. This is our dedicated creative learning space, packed full of state of the art equipment and perfect for playful adventures in filmmaking. 3 PRIMARY EDUCATION Photo Steve Lomas KEY STAGE 2 Tyneside Cinema offers primary schools a wide range of practical and theoretical one-day workshops. Our sessions connect to real working life, are run by film experts and developed in consultation with teachers. Curriculum links include English/Literacy, Science, History, Art & Design and Enterprise. FILMMAKING WORKSHOPS The Biopic Bring famous figures from history to life with our biopic workshops. Students work together to create a film based around the key events and achievements in the life of a historical figure. Topics: Shakespeare, Florence Nightingale, Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh. Curriculum Links: Literacy, History, Art Art of Film Unleash your creativity and explore art and design through this workshop focussing on the artistic potential of the moving image. Students work in small groups to create short films exploring a range of techniques including animation, split-screen films, and sound design. Curriculum Links: Art 3

Students work together to create a news story depicting a key event from history in the style of a newsreel. Topics: The Great Fire of London, World War I, World War II. Curriculum Links: History Adaptation Bring key literary texts to life through this adaptation workshop. Students work together in small groups to plan, shoot and edit a short film based on key moments from the original text. Topics: Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth. Curriculum Links: Literacy, History The Movie Business Come and find out what it s like to work in the oldest newsreel cinema in Britain! Who picks the films? Where do the posters come from? How has technology changed the way we see the movies? Students will get an exclusive behindthe-scenes tour that will help them understand how the creative industries work and be challenged to design their own cinema for school! 5 DRESSY UP SCREENINGS STEP ONTO THE SET OF SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE FILMS IN OUR DRESSY UP SCREENINGS We re inviting your pupils to dress up as their favourite movie characters as you join us for exclusive screenings of some classic and new-release films. Last year we hosted screenings themed around superheroes and Star Wars, and we can t wait to share this year s programme with you. See for details of upcoming screenings. 6 PRIMARY EDUCATION Time Machine: Time Travel Agent Ava Scott TIME MACHINE TYNESIDE CINEMA S AWARD WINNING INTERACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE Time Machine is a unique and interactive learning experience, which celebrates the rich heritage of Tyneside Cinema as the last purpose-built surviving News Theatre in the UK still screening film full time. News Theatres played a crucial role in bringing local, national and international news stories to the public for decades and now Tyneside Cinema goes back to its roots to place them in the context of the national curriculum in a way that will excite, inspire and delight pupils at Key Stage 2. Your class will work with Time Travel Agent Ava Scott to save the Tyneside Cinema from the evil clutches of King Kronos. Students will complete four classroombased missions before visiting the cinema for their final exciting challenge. Each mission is designed to be flexible enough for you to base one or more lessons around it. 7 The Time Machine project is a valuable one in terms of literacy and local history. It will allow children to work collaboratively, solving problems and discovering facts about the Tyneside Cinema as well as developing their understanding of the history of news. 9 SECONDARY EDUCATION FILMMAKING WORKSHOPS FOR KEY STAGE 3 Designed with the help of teachers, these one-day workshops are a brilliant way to engage students with the demands of the curriculum, preparing them for their coursework and contributing towards their qualifications. Each workshop explores a range of curriculum links and helps develop and extend students understanding of the subject and ability to engage with it in a number of ways. Curriculum Links: Media Studies Adaptation Bring key literary texts to life through this adaptation workshop. Students work together in small groups to plan, shoot and edit a short film based on key moments from the original text. Topics: Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth. Curriculum Links: English literature Art of Film Unleash your creativity and explore art and design through this workshop focussing on the artistic potential of the moving image. Curriculum Links: Art & Design Moving Image Skills: Camera, Sound, Editing These intensive practical workshops led by experienced industry professionals will help prepare students for delivering their coursework at both GCSE and A-Level. Available in Camera and Sound, and Editing for Beginners. Curriculum Links: Media Studies, Art & Design Music Video This practical production workshop sees students working in small groups to plan, shoot and edit a music video based on one of three available music tracks that explores the conventions of the medium including representations of the artist, the use of narrative, symbolism and visual style. 11 MFL STUDY DAYS Our interactive study events for students of French, German and Spanish are a great way for students to develop skills and gain confidence. Bringing language learning to life, study days feature screenings of some of the best world cinema releases along with activities and discussions closely tied to the curriculum. Each event includes a full feature film screening, cinema-based presentations facilitated in the targeted language and a comprehensive resource pack, full of activities to use on the day. 12 SECONDARY EDUCATION FILM LITERACY DAYS We offer a number of lectures and screenings that support qualifications at GCSE and AS/A2 level. Each session is presented by one of our experienced staff members and is followed by a discussion around the key topic. The Film Industry TUESDAY 4 OCTOBER 2016 An exploration of the movie business that looks at how ownership, production, distribution, consumption, technology and regulation influence what audience s come to see. Suitable for students studying WJEC Media Studies, WJEC Film Studies, OCR Film Studies, OCR Media Studies, AQA Media Studies. Film Language WEDNESDAY 12 OCTOBER 2016 An exploration of how camera, mise-en-scene, lighting, sound and editing combine to create meaning. Suitable for students studying WJEC Media Studies and Film Studies, OCR Film Studies, OCR Media Studies. Exploring Genre: Sci-Fi TUESDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2016 An in depth look at the codes and conventions of the science fiction genre. Suitable for students studying for AQA / GCSE Media Studies. Exploring Genre: Superhero Films TUESDAY 7 FEBRUARY 2017 An in depth look at the codes and conventions of the superhero genre. Suitable for students studying for WJEC / GCSE Film Studies. Film as Art TUESDAY 28 FEBRUARY 2017 An exploration of how artists have used film as a medium for expressing ideas, using techniques and production processes very different to those of commercial cinema. 13 I ve enjoyed watching the kids dress up, get into character and turn into film directors. FILM CRAFT WORKSHOPS Need an in-depth introduction to the art and craft of filmmaking? This series of practical one-day workshops are an excellent way to explore the key building blocks of bringing a film to the screen. Scriptwriting Includes generating ideas, using structure to create an engaging story, the writer s documents, and the creative process. Directing Includes role and responsibilities, finding the story beats in the script, storyboarding, working with actors, shooting a scene. Cinematography Includes basic photographic principles, cameras and lenses, lighting, effective camera movement, how to shoot a scene. Sound Includes basic principles of sound on film, recording high quality audio with a range of microphones and use of sound effects to create a dramatic scene. 14 SECONDARY EDUCATION INDEPENDENT YOUNG PEOPLE: FILM ACADEMIES We offer intensive four-month programmes for young people to get involved in different types of filmmaking. These run on Saturdays from 10:00 to 16: Documentary Academy (age 15-18) SEPTEMBER DECEMBER 2016 This intensive introduction to documentary filmmaking allows participants to focus on learning new skills, meet industry professionals, and work together to plan, shoot and edit a short film that is showcased at Tyneside Cinema.
