1 SCHOOL OF MEDIA ARTS & DESIGN FILM PORTFOLIO REVIEW The Film Prgram requires all majrs t engage in the prtfli review prcess prir t graduatin. Objective: The purpses f prtfli review are t assess yur grwth and prgress within the film curriculum, t evaluate yur knwledge f film, and t prvide suggestins fr imprvement. GENERAL INFORMATION: Prtfli Review will be held nce per semester. Please refer t the department calendar fr dates. Yu must schedule a review time and submit the materials requested (see details belw), which will be dne during class and/r in the administrative ffice, CA116. D this n later than ne week prir t the start f Prtfli Review. The reviews will be held in CA33 and ccasinally in CA43. Each review runs a ttal f 35 minutes: Yu will have 20 minutes t present yurself and yur wrk t at least tw Film faculty members. Faculty will then ask yu t wait in the hallway fr a few minutes while they evaluate yur wrk and yur presentatin, after which yu will be invited back t have a brief discussin abut yur prgress. There will be a brief break between reviews t allw yu t gather yur materials r fr set up prir t yur review. Arrive early and be prepared t start n time. Presentatin is an imprtant part f yur review. Be prepared. Dress apprpriately. Yu are making a prfessinal presentatin. Failure t schedule yur review r failure t attend yur review will prevent yu frm cntinuing n in the Film prgram until the review has been cmpleted. If yu fail t participate in Prtfli Review, yu must submit a letter f appeal t the Department Chair, the Film Studies Assessment Cmmittee, and yur academic advisr. Prtfli Review will be held during ne week f each semester. Students will be eligible fr review based n their prgress in the film curriculum as fllws: 1

2 FOUNDATIONAL REVIEW: FILM STUDIES MAJORS: A student is eligible fr the first review when she/he has cmpleted tw f the fllwing three curses, and must be enrlled and in prgress n the third curse: Film 172: Vide Prductin, Film 280: Histry f Film, Film 281: Film Appreciatin. FILM PRODUCTION MAJORS: A student is eligible fr the first review when she/he is enrlled in Film 384: Techniques f Directing. DOUBLE MAJORS: A student is eligible fr the first review when she/he meets the criteria fr bth f the majrs listed abve (cmpleted and/r enrlled in all f the fllwing: Film 172, Film 284, Film 384, Film 280 and Film 281). Plan fr the fllwing and submit by deadline: Submit 1 Film Appreciatin Paper and 1 Film Histry Paper (r any ther Film Histry/Thery paper) t the administrative ffice, CA116. At yur review, give a 20-minute presentatin reflecting upn yur Film Studies educatin t this pint. Students will demnstrate knwledge f film histry, prductin, aesthetics, and thery. 3. Students will demnstrate knwledge f basic filmmaking practices and techniques. These include: specialized language use, cinematgraphy principles, lighting and sund elements, editing and directing cncepts. 4. Students will examine, analyze and articulate cnclusins as t the histrical/critical values inherent in film text materials. 5. Students will integrate evaluatin, thery, and prductin/research skills in the creatin f a capstne prject fr public presentatin. 5
