But as the project gets underway, Peter, who is a trained physicist thinks he can match his architects design skills with his own scientific knowledge. In Ringwood The contributors dream home in the New Forest was destroyed by a chimney fire and they discovered they weren t insured. Despite losing everything they are determined to rebuild their thatched cottage bigger and better than before, combining traditional building methods with contemporary design. Eager to get started and up to their eyes in debt they charge ahead without having got the finance in place, get dropped by their mortgage company and find it difficult for any bank to give them a loan. Ely Looks at a couple who set about, literally, to self build not just a stunning eco home but a whole new sustainable life for their family in the Cambridgeshire Fens. The complex hexagonal oak frame and straw bale house is built around an 800 year old oak tree that has to be carved into a spiral staircase.
