AUDITION PACKET Directed by Will Connell Musical Direction by Dave Snyder & Amy Brower Choreographed by Janine Merolla & Laura Barron For grades 3-5 We are thrilled for another year of our rewarding 3 rd -5 th grade performance program! Watching our young actors gain confidence through theatrical skills is both rewarding and so exciting. We are also so pleased to welcome new performers who join us throughout the year. After a wildly successful season we are looking forward to continuing the growth, development and confidence-building of our 3 rd -5 th grade performers. Highlights for all casts of The Lion King KIDS include: 2 performances More time once we move into Rosemont s Rotwitt Theater (for tech & dress rehearsals) 1.5 hours of rehearsal each week to provide more time and preparation 1 or 2 Saturday rehearsals This packet includes: Important information about time commitment to this show Synopsis and character List for The Lion King KIDS Audition form which is to be completed and handed in at your audition Conflict form to complete and bring to your audition Audition material and selection recommendations Auditions All actors must audition in order to participate in The Lion King KIDS. NOTE: While we do not make cuts for this grade level, we DO encourage actors to be fully prepared and confident when they arrive for their audition. We will complete the casting puzzle based on what we see at auditions, so please remind your performer that we are on their side and can t wait to see what they ve got! Auditions will be held on Tuesday, September 11 th and Wednesday, September 12 th from 4:00pm- 6:00pm. NOTE: This year, there is a $50 non-refundable audition deposit DUE BEFORE auditions. This deposit will be applied to your tuition once the shows are cast. Callbacks will be held on Thursday, September 13 th from 4:00pm-6:00pm. If your performer is needed for a callback, we will notify you during the day on Thursday. Please keep this date available.
NOTE: Not every actor will be needed at callbacks, however, this does not mean your actor has not been cast in the production. It simply means we saw everything we needed to at the 1 st auditions! Casting and Rehearsal Information Casting at Wolf PAC is based on three main criteria: talent, behavior, and availability. Once the production staff has had the chance to assess the criteria for every actor who auditions, we will assign roles based on what is the best fit for the actor and the overall production. 3 Adding costumes, sets, lights, props, and an audience! Communication Cooperation Self-Confidence Responsibility and independence Time management **ATTENDANCE POLICY** Because the joy of participating in a show is the true teamwork involved, it is very important that all actors attend rehearsal each week. Absences create a challenge for the Directors, for your child, and also for the other members of the cast. Please do your best to ensure the attendance of your performer each week. Here are some Wolf PAC rules regarding attendance: *3 or more absences will affect casting *ALL students MUST be present for rehearsals the week before the show ( Tech Week ) as well as the performances. *Conflicts revealed AFTER casting may result in a change or loss of part If you are in need of carpool help, we are here to help you! Please feel free to contact Betsy Wolf Regn with any questions by ing betsy@wolfperformingartscenter.org. To register for your audition time slot AND pay your $50 non-refundable audition deposit, visit Want to feel extra prepared? 4 Disney s The Lion King KIDS Music and Lyrics by Elton John & Tim Rice Additional Music and Lyrics by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, & Hans Zimmer Book by Roger Allers & Irene Mecchi Based on the Broadway Production Directed by Julie Taymor Synopsis Our story takes us on an adventure across the African savanna to the community of the Pridelands. We are met by the Villagers, Rafiki, and a wide array of stunning animals. Mufasa and Sarabi, who are king and queen of the Pridelands, give birth to an adventurous son who is named Young Simba. The family is joined by the loyal advisor Zazu, and Young Simba s best friend, Young Nala. Although the Pridelands seems to be a peaceful place, we soon discover that Scar, Mufasa s brother, feels scorned and will do anything to become king. It becomes Simba s responsibility as he grows older to learn to defend his position as the rightful leader of the Pridelands, to bring honor to his community, and to ensure that he lives as bravely as possible despite the many challenges that arise... This story of hope and resilience reminds each person that courage can be found in the most unique places, and that it is never too late to stand up for what is right. CAST OF CHARACTERS Villagers: A company of story tellers who transform into the animals of the Pridelands, as well as the desert, jungle, and tricksters Rafikis: Five mysterious and wise mandrills; narrators of the story Mufasa: A lion, king of the Pridelands and Simba s father Sarabi: A lioness, queen of the Pridelands and Simba s mother Zazu: a hornbill; Mufasa s loyal yet fretful attendant Scar: A lion; Mufasa s jealous brother Young Simba: Mufasa s son in his earliest years Simba: Mufasa s son as he grows up; a curious, eager lion who will one day be king Young Nala: Simba s best friend in her earliest years Nala: Simba s best friend as she grows up; a spunky, brave lioness Banzai: A scruffy hyena who serves Scar Shenzi: A tough hyena who serves Scar Ed: A dim-witted hyena who serves Scar Hyenas: Stinky, mangy animals who live outside the Pridelands Timon: A sarcastic, outgoing meerkat who lives in the jungle Pumba: A gentle, kind-hearted warthog and Timon s best friend Zebras, Gazelles, Giraffes, Doves, Parrots, East African Elephant, East African Wildcat, Wildebeests: The animals of the Pridelands
AUDITION MATERIAL For ACTORS: There are two steps to your audition! STEP 1: Singing Each actor will be asked to sing a part of a song they choose from the list below. You will first introduce yourself and let your directors know what you will be singing. Practice this with the following sentence: Hello! My name is. I am in grade, and I will be singing today. o NOTE: Your directors might also ask you to answer a question about yourself (favorite dessert, favorite food, favorite animal, etc). This helps us get to you know you a little better! SONG SELECTIONS: Note: All songs can be sung by male or female performers! Circle of Life- measures It s the circle of life And it moves us all Through despair and hope Through faith and love. I Just Can t Wait to be King- measures No one saying do this. No one saying be there. No one saying stop that. No one saying see here! Free to run around all day. Free to do it all my way. Can You Feel the Love Tonight- measures He s holding back, he s hiding. But what? I can t decide. Why won t he be the king I know he is, The king I see inside? Can you feel the love tonight, The peace the evening brings? The world for once, in perfect harmony With all its living things.
STEP 2: Acting Please review the following lines and be prepared to perform them at auditions. These lines do not have to be memorized. Actors will be told by their directors during the audition for which character they will read. Please be prepared to read for both parts. MUFASA: Look, Simba: Everything the light touches is our kingdom. YOUNG SIMBA: Wow MUFASA: A king s time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day, Simba, the sun will set on my time here and will rise with you as the new king. YOUNG SIMBA: And this ll all be mine? MUFASA: Everything. YOUNG SIMBA (points in the distance): What about that shadowy place way out there? MUFASA: That s beyond our borders. You must never go there, Simba. YOUNG SIMBA: But I thought a king can do whatever he wants. MUFASA: Well, there s a lot more to being king than getting your way all the time.
AUDITION MATERIAL For PARENTS: How can I help my actor do his/her best at auditions? Ask your actor the follow questions: Do you understand what every word means in your song/scene? What is happening in the scene? What does Mufasa want? What does Simba want? What are the characters feeling? How do you show that emotion? When your actor prepares at home, ask yourself the following: Are their voices loud and clear? Are they showing emotion on their faces during their scene and song? Are they using their whole body to tell the story when singing their song?
