3 Welcome Thank you for your interest in auditioning for a Theatre Tallahassee production! We ve put this information packet together for you to help you learn a little more about the play, the characters you will be reading for, and to give you some idea of what to expect during auditions. If you ve auditioned for us before, welcome back! If this is your first time auditioning at Theatre Tallahassee, we re thrilled to have you! Part of community theatre is bringing in new talent. Whether you re a veteran performer who just moved to town or you ve never been on stage before but really want to try, we d like to encourage you to audition for shows at Theatre Tallahassee. What you should know about auditions Theatre Tallahassee auditions are open we try our best to discourage directors from pre-casting roles. Sometimes auditions involve cold readings from the script, other directors prefer that you prepare and will provide sides. Be sure to read the director s notes on this production so you ll be ready. We keep copies of the script at the theatre, so if you would like the opportunity to read it ahead of time, you can drop by during business hours and we ll let you peruse it at Theatre Tallahassee. Auditions vary a bit, director to director. All directors have their personal preferences on how they want to run their auditions. We know that it can be disappointing not to get a part. We always have more people audition than we have roles for, and there are many factors that directors have to weigh when casting. We encourage you to come in and audition often, though. Just because you weren t right for one role, doesn t mean that you won t be perfect for another. We also like to encourage performers to get involved on the production side of shows. Helping paint or build sets, costumes or props is a great way to meet people, network, and get involved. We look forward to seeing you on stage. Break a leg!

4 The Play In this Sesame Street-style coming of age parable, we follow recent college grad, Princeton, as he moves all the way out to Brooklyn s rundown to try and finally answer the age old question What DO you do with a B.A. in English? Here colorful and oddly familiar characters teach young Princeton valuable life lessons about love, sex, and racism. This uninhibited musical comedy makes fun out of difficult learning opportunities. Have you ever wondered what happens to 80s child stars, exactly what the internet is for, how to be afraid of commitment, or how to find life outside your apartment? Well, we ve got the answers... Or at least some of them... For now. The Director J.C. Carr is one of the new directors joining the ranks this season, but he s a familiar face at Theatre Tallahassee. He s likely been the one mixing your drinks there this year and he s been seen onstage in White Christmas (2014) and Evita. This year, he has been transitioning to the other side of the stage, working as a stage manager, music director, and assistant director in the season. Outside of the theatre, J.C. is still trying to figure out what to do with his B.A. in Religion, or his B.S. in Social Sciences for that matter. He has worked for Fellowship Presbyterian as a Youth Director and vocalist for the past four years as well as with Theatre Tallahassee and DCF. Working on is the fulfillment of a dream for him, and to think, he finally found an ironic use for all of those puppet shows in Vacation Bible School... Mainstage Season Shows This production is part of Theatre Tallahassee s Mainstage season. If you ve never performed on our Mainstage, here s a quick list of what you should know. Mainstage productions are performed in our main auditorium, which seats approximately 270 people. Rehearsals usually start about 5-6 weeks before the show opens. Opening night is usually held on a Thursday evening. Performances run for three weekends, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

5 Auditions Dates: June 19 & 20 at 7pm Location: Theatre Tallahassee 1861 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, FL. Call Backs: June 21 at 7pm by director invitation only. Rehearsal Schedule Rehearsals will run June 27th-August 17th Monday-Friday 7-10 PM No rehearsals on July 4th Tech begins: August 10 (tentative) Dress Rehearsals: August Performance Schedule Week 1: August 18th-21st Week 2: August 26th-28th Week 3: September 2nd-4th Weeknight and Saturday evening performances are 8 pm, generally with a 6:30 pm call time Sunday matinee performances are at 2pm, generally with a 12:30 pm call time. All actors must be able to commit to all performance dates & dress rehearsals.

6 Characters All ages are character approximations. Since this is vocal acting, we encourage anyone to try for the part/parts they are interested in. PRINCETON - M, early to mid 20s (Bb2-G4 Baritenor) A recent college graduate who is struggling to find his purpose in life. PUPPET KATE MONSTER - F, early to late 20s (F#3-F5 Alto): A kindergarten teaching assistant who is kinda pretty and pretty damn smart. PUPPET CHRISTMAS EVE - F- Asian, mid 20s to early 30s (B3-F#5 Mezzo-soprano): An archetypal first generation Asian immigrant who has 2 master s degrees and a killer Judy Garland impression. This role will be cast as written. BRIAN - M, late 20s to mid 30s (B2-F#4 Baritone): A laid-back failed comedian who is married to Christmas Eve GARY COLEMAN - F - Black, mid 20s to late 30s (D3-Bb5 Alto with strong belt voice): A black 80s child star from TV s Different Strokes who is now the superintendent on. This role will be cast as written. ROD - M, mid 20s to mid 30s (A2-G4 Baritenor): A log cabin Republican investment banker struggling with his sexual orientation and hidden love for his roommate, Nicky. PUPPET NICKY - M, mid 20s to early 30s (B2-B4 Baritenor): A bit of a slacker who lives with Rod and is reminiscent of Ernie from Sesame Street. PUPPET TREKKIE MONSTER - M, any age (Bb2-Eb4 Baritone): A porn-obsessed monster who lives on Avenue Q and sounds a lot like the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street PUPPET LUCY T. SLUT - F, early to late 20s (F3-F5 Alto): A seductive nightclub singer who got her start by starring in Girls Gone Wild Parts 2, 5, and 7 PUPPET THE BAD IDEA BEARS - 1 F and 1 M: Two cute, little bears who act as shoulder devils convincing good people to bad things. PUPPETS MRS. THISTLETWAT - older female: The ancient and coarse Kindergarten teacher that Kate works for. PUPPET

7 Audition Notes Since there is no ensemble in this show, all auditions must be for a specific part or parts. This is a very non-traditional show, with puppets, adult themes and adult language, and may not be for everyone, please be aware of the material before auditioning. Actors should prepare 16 bars of music from the musical theatre catalogue and a short comedic monologue taken from any recognizable source. Auditionees should be prepared to deliver both of these selections in a character voice appropriate for the primary role they are seeking. We ask that this portion of the audition last no longer than 90 seconds as you may be asked to perform the musical selection twice (if auditioning for multiple roles). An accompanist and puppets will be provided. Audition attire should be all black or dark colored clothing that you are comfortable moving in, but not necessarily movement attire. Auditions will contain a brief movement segment. Callbacks will be held on June 21st at the director s invitation only. Callback auditions will consist of music and side selections from the show.
