1 The Winnipesaukee Playhouse Education Department Presents About the Play: Adapted for the Stage by Nigel Williams Based on the Novel by William Golding Auditions: September 10th and 11th Callbacks: September 15th Performances: November 3 5, 2017 Youth & Teen Production (Ages 8-18) When a group of schoolboys survive a catastrophic plane crash, what starts as a desert island adventure quickly descends into a struggle for survival in a darkly sinister world of superstition and immorality. Nigel Williams adaptation is based on William Golding s 1954 novel, which was named by Random House s The Modern Library as one of the 100 best English language novels of the twentieth Century. Creative Team: About Content: About Gender: Who is Eligible: Audition Dates: Directed by John- Michael Breen & Timothy L Ecuyer Stage Management by Chris Slater Scenic Design by Andrew Stuart Lighting Design by Thom Beaulieu Costume Design by Lesley Pankhurst Sound Design by Charles Fray Lord of the Flies is an allegory about the breakdown of civil order and the emergence of some of humanity s innate barbaric tendencies. This production will contain theatrical depictions of savagery, violence, and murder. The text also contains a few brief references to sexual assault. Conversations about these issues in rehearsal will be handled maturely and sensitively, but will deal directly with questions related to violence: where it comes from, if it is inherent to all people, what to do about it, etc. Staging these scenes will hold the actors physical and emotional safety as the highest priority, but it may be physically and emotionally challenging to perform and watch this piece. Every effort will be made to deal with these issues with younger cast members (age 8-12) separately and in a developmentally appropriate way. While the characters in this play are all male, actors of all genders will be considered for all roles. As gender is a motif in the piece, it will certainly be a consideration in casting, but no firm decisions about an actor of a particular gender playing a particular character will be made until auditions. In short, all roles are open to everyone and everyone should audition regardless of gender! Auditions are open to anyone ages Sunday, September 10, 2017 Monday, September 11, :00 6:00 6:00 9:00 You do NOT need to attend both days, nor do you need to stay the entire time on the night you attend. Instead, you will make a 5-10 minute appointment when you register. Those invited to callbacks will be asked to stay for the whole callback.
2 How to Register: What to Prepare: Register for an audition appointment at under the Education tab OR by calling For those ages 13-18, please prepare TWO of the pieces from the Audition Material section later in this packet. Monologues should be memorized. If you are also auditioning for Narnia, you should prepare only one Lord of the Flies monologue and your Narnia monologue and song. For those ages 8-12, please prepare ONE of the pieces from the Audition Material section later in this packet. Monologues should be memorized. If you are also auditioning for Narnia, you only need to prepare your Narnia materials (monologue and song), but you should take a look at the audition material later in this packet as you may be asked to read (with paper in hand.) In the event a student is asked to attend callbacks, no additional preparation is needed. Joint Auditions: Note that the auditions for Lord of the Flies and Narnia will happen in the same room at the same time. Students may audition for Lord of the Flies, Narnia, or both and should prepare the required materials for whatever show(s) for which they choose to audition. Can I do both shows? - The strong likelihood is that, if cast, a student will only be cast in one show or the other. The time commitment to rehearse and perform both would be intense. That said, students interested in being considered to perform in both shows concurrently should indicate that on their audition forms. If students are cast in both productions, directors will attempt to take this into account when creating rehearsal schedules. Where there are conflicts, however, the first show to perform (Lord of the Flies) would take precedence. Callbacks: Parent Meeting: Rehearsals: Volunteers: Callbacks will be 5:00-9:00 on Friday, September 15, Those called back should plan on staying the entire time. Callbacks are by invitation only. A list of people needed for callbacks will be posted on the website as soon as possible after the final day of auditions. Everyone who auditioned will received an when the list is posted. The callback evening will consist of a movement exercise and readings from the script. Please come dressed in comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. ***Those 12 and under will not be asked to stay past 7:00. For students cast in the production, there is a mandatory parent/guardian meeting on the first day of rehearsal. This meeting should be attended by the student and at least one parent/guardian. We will cover Education Department policies and procedures, paperwork, and any questions people have. The meeting will take about 30 minutes and rehearsal will begin immediately after the conclusion of the meeting. This production will rehearse Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 6:00-9:00 as well as Sundays 1:00-5:00. A detailed rehearsal schedule is included at the end of this document. At the parent/guardian meeting, we will discuss opportunities for volunteers to help in various production capacities on this production. Parent, guardian, and family member volunteerism is not required for a student to participate in the production,
3 but it helps us get this show off the ground and is HUGELY appreciated. (It s a great opportunity for siblings who need volunteer hours for school or other programs!) Tech Week: Load- in for this production will happen October We will definitely be requesting volunteers to help install the set during this time. Tech and Dress Rehearsals are Monday, October 30 Thursday, November 2 and run 5:00PM 10:00PM on Monday and Tuesday and 5:00-9:00 Wednesday and Thursday. Performances: Friday, November 3, 2017 at 10:00AM (tentative 8:00AM call) Friday, November 3, 2017 at 7:30PM (tentative 5:30PM call) Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 2:00PM (tentative 12:00PM call) Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 7:30PM (tentative 5:30PM call) Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 2:00PM (tentative 12:00 call) Please ALSO Note: This production will begin its run with a school day matinee the morning of November 3 rd. This will obviously require cast members to miss school that morning. Accepting a role in this production is a commitment to participate in ALL performances. Commitment: It is, of course, preferred that each cast member is available for every rehearsal. That said, we acknowledge that people have a lot going on and need to fit this production into already busy schedules. Not every student will be called (required to attend) every rehearsal. The theatre will publish a detailed schedule taking students conflicts into account. Students will be asked to put their schedule conflicts on the form at auditions. When a student is cast, the theatre agrees to work with all conflicts indicated on the back of the audition form. Additional conflicts (that were not disclosed at the time of auditions) may lead to dismissal from the production without a refund of tuition. There may be instances where a student s availability affects casting decisions. All tech and dress rehearsals as well as performances are mandatory and may, therefore, only be missed in the case of the most extreme illness or emergency. Tuition: The fee to participate is $50 and is due at the first rehearsal/meeting. The fee does not include the cost of tickets to the performance. Financial aid and payment plans may be available. Do not let the cost of participation prevent students from auditioning. There may be optional items (t- shirts, etc.) available for an additional cost. Inquiries: Please do not hesitate to contact Education Director Timothy L Ecuyer with any questions and/or concerns you may have by ing timothy@winniplayhouse.org or by calling Information about this production and everything else at the theatre is always available on the website:
4 AUDITION MATERIAL Students ages 8-12 should prepare (including memorizing) one of the following. Students ages only auditioning for Lord of the Flies should prepare (including memorizing) two those auditioning for Narnia also should prepare ONE plus their Narnia monologue and song. Everyone should look over all five. Make specific, interesting physical and vocal choices that bring appropriate emphasis to the text. RALPH (Attempting to calm everyone down and restore order.) I m sorry. I m sorry I took your glasses. I m sorry I lost my temper. I m sorry I told them your name if it comes to that. I m sorry. You were right. If we hadn t if the fire hadn t if we d have thought. Piggy s right. We all got carried away. We got stupid really. We must do things prop ly like he said. And this fire now this fire is started we must never let it go out. There must always be someone here to guard it and make sure it s kept, so that if a ship comes and sees us we ll be rescued. Sam n Eric can start here. And we ll go down to the beach. And build shelters. We have to start now. And be sensible. That s what we have to do. And I say so. I m chief and I say so. JACK (Attempting to control the other boys through fear) Sometimes the beast takes the shape of a man. And sometimes it s like an animal. A horrible animal. And sometimes it looks like a little boy. Like an ordinary little boy. Like the one who came into the circle that time. It can take all sorts of shapes. So you have to be careful. And it ll be back. The best can move about you see. It changes its shape all the time. But you can tell from a person s eyes if the beast is in them. I know when the beast has got into someone. I can tell by looking at them. I can tell by looking. And when the best is in someone, you have to kill them, like we killed Simon. That was all right. It was because the beast was in him. After it was in the fat one, and now it s it s in Ralph. PIGGY (Admonishing the group for letting the signal fire go out.) I toldjer, didn t I? I toldjer not to be so stupid. I toldjer it was a meetin an that. An we should a done things in order. An you wouldn t lissen wouldjer? When it comes to it you re all the same I reckon. Same lot you are. Look at you! Kneelin over something thass no use now. Look at yourself! We can t jus do as we like. An if we all talk at the same time we ll never get nowhere will we? I ll tell you what. I ll tell you what (He holds up a large conch shell) This shell. This shell thingy If we have a meetin ooever holds the shell means that person is talkin. And that is a rule. A rule, you hear me? An it must never be broken. JACK (He has just killed a pig for the first time and he is holding its head.) There. I got it. See? That s my head. (He forces his spear into the earth.) And this is where I killed it. This marks the spot where I killed it. Whenever we kill a pig we ll do that. We ll put the head where we killed it. We ll plant it, sort of. If you get to be good hunters and can hunt, you can do that. And the head will be special. It ll grow almost because we ve planted it and set it up on a spear like the head on the castle wall, you remember and we ll keep away the (He forces the pig s head down on the spear) beast. Eh? That s for you, beast! SIMON (On the verge of a seizure brought on by extreme heat, dehydration, stress, and exhaustion, Simon hallucinates while looking at the pig s head Jack has left impaled on a spear. In his hallucination, he speaks with the pig s head. Though all dialogue is spoken by him, the pig s head s lines are noted in bold.) It s blood. And it s flies. It s blood That head. That head. When I was eight I saw a man kill a bird. And I thought Merridew says I don t pull my weight. Funny. Why should you pull weight? Eh, Piggy? Piggy? Those are flies. There s blood and those are flies. It s not my fault there s blood and flies is it? You look stupid come to that. Oh no I don t! Oh yes you do! You re a bad boy, do you hear me! You re no go! I m not no go, sir! Oh yes you are you re an ignorant, silly little boy! And I know you are because I m the beast! You re not. You re not. Pig s head on a stick. You re just a silly I feel funny. I m going to don t make me have a turn, sir. Ralph! RALPH! (He passes out.)
