VV 301 FILM STUDIES TYPES OF FILM Prepared by: WAN FARHANAH BINTI WAN ISMAIL (PTSS,2012)

TYPES OF FILM These are the basic types of films: a) Documentary film b) Fiction film c) Animated film

DOCUMENTARY FILM Definition - a non-fiction (factual), narrative film with real people (not performers or actors); typically a low-budget production, journalistic record of an event, person, or place It is also called direct cinema A documentary film-maker should be an unobtrusive observer - like a fly-on-the-wall, capturing reality as it happens.

DOCUMENTARY FILM Example of documentary film: Super Size Me (2004) - The film documents this lifestyle's drastic effect on Morgan Spurlock's physical and psychological wellbeing, and explores the fast food industry's corporate influence, including how it encourages poor nutrition for its own profit.

FICTION FILM Definition A film that tells a fictional story, event or narrative. In simpler words, fiction film consists of a made- up story, an imaginary thing or event that does not represent actuality but has been invented.

FICTION FILM There are lots of fiction films with different genres ever created by film-maker out there. For example:

ANIMATED FILM Definition A motion picture or television film consisting of a photographed series of drawings, objects, or computer graphics that simulates motion by recording very slight, continuous changes in the images, frame by

ANIMATED FILM There are different categories of animation: a. Stop motion b. Claymation c. 2D Animation d. 3D Animation

STOP MOTION Definition - an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence.

STOP MOTION Example of stop motion: the film Mighty Joe Young (1949) the gorilla was animated using stop motion technique.

CLAYMATION Definition - one of many forms of stop motion animation by using deformable Plasticine clay for each animated piece either character or background. Chicken Run Pingu

2D ANIMATION Definition - The creation of moving pictures in a two-dimensional environment by sequencing consecutive images, or frames that simulate motion by each image showing the next in a gradual progression of steps. 2 types of 2D Animation: a. Traditional drawing (manually drawn on transparent cells frame by frame) b. Digital animation (digital scanning, ink, paint, and compositing system using 2D animation software)

2D ANIMATION Examples of 2D Animation movies: Traditional 2D Animation Digitally animated

3D ANIMATION Definition - Animating objects that appear in a three-dimensional space. They can be rotated and moved like real objects. Examples of 3D animation movies:

FILM IMPROVISATION To break away from conventional way of filming, some filmmakers invent new style of film making by practicing film improvisation. Hence the term experimental and avant-garde film were invented. Experimental film - range of filmmaking styles that are generally quite different from, and often opposed to, the practices of mainstream commercial and documentary filmmaking. Avant-Garde film French word meaning "advance guard" or "vanguard". The term is used to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.

EXPERIMENTAL FILM Experimental film is often characterized by the absence of linear narrative, the use of various abstracting techniques -- out-of-focus, painting or scratching on film, rapid editing -- the use of asynchronous sound or even the absence of any sound track. The goal is often to place the viewer in a more active and more thoughtful relationship to the film. At least through the 1960s, and to some extent after, many experimental films took an oppositional stance toward mainstream culture.

EXPERIMENTAL FILM Example of Experimental Film: Meshes of the Afternoon (Maya Deren, 1943)

AVANT-GARDE FILM Avant-garde means pushing of the boundaries instead of the norm or the status quo, primarily in the culture. The idea of the avant-garde existence is The idea of the avant-garde existence is considered to be a symbol of modernism, as distinct from postmodernism.

AVANT-GARDE FILM Example of Avant-garde film: Battleship Potemkin (Sergei Eisenstein, 1925)
