PINE RIDGE ELEMENTARY CALENDAR CHANGE PRESENTATION NOVEMBER 13, 2012 SCOTT SIEGFRIED, PH.D. ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

AGENDA Provide information regarding the history, process and timeline associated with the utilization of 4-track in Cherry Creek and at Pine Ridge Elementary School Long Range Facility Planning Committee Year Round / 4-Track history and utilization in CCSD Growth at Pine Ridge Plan for Pine Ridge to accommodate growth

LONG RANGE FACILITY PLANNING COMMITTEE LRFPC The mission of the LRFPC, an advisory committee to the Board of Education, is to promote Excellence in Education by recommending cost effective plans for the use of capital facilities. Toward this end, the committee evaluates issues such as new construction, renovation of existing facilities, attendance boundaries, and 4-track calendar issues from a district-wide perspective, while honoring diversity among facilities and populations within the district. Policy BDF R-5 The LRFPC consists of two representatives from each Director District and three At-Large representatives who provide a communication link between the school district, parents, non-parent citizens, business people, and the community at large.

Boundary Decision Elementary #41 VALUES Presentation Made at Buffalo Trail Elementary School September 2, 2009

PRE Community Meeting September 2, 2009 VALUES The following values guide our decision making as new school boundaries are identified. They are not prioritized and may be contradictory. Maintain neighborhood school concept. Minimize transportation costs and maximize student walk-in. Use natural or manmade barriers (i.e. arterial streets) Maintain contiguous boundaries Minimize the number of boundary changes affecting a particular neighborhood.

PRE Community Meeting September 2, 2009 VALUES Do not move an area that may someday need to be moved back to the original school. Boundaries should not result in any four-track school moving to a single-track calendar just to move back on in the future Consistent with Board Policy ICC, Elementary #41 will be a year-round school. It will open on a single-track and move to a four-track calendar when enrollment exceeds single- track capacity. Beginning enrollment should be minimum of 300 students. Avoid, if possible, splitting any attendance area between two M.S.

BOARD POLICY ICC The board views the use of a four-track, year-round calendar as an effective educational model that will be implemented in the district. District administration is authorized to transition new or existing elementary schools to the four-track, year-round calendar when enrollment projections indicate that the school(s) will significantly exceed building capacity on a single-track calendar for the foreseeable future. District administration will determine the calendar year for transition to the four-track, year-round calendar for specific schools with input from the Planning Office and the Long-Range Facility Planning Committee. Sufficient planning time will provide for the transition so that appropriate communication and preparation may occur. The district will plan and build new elementary facilities with the ongoing assumption that all new schools will transition to the four-track, year-round model as the school enrollment grows. Proposed: April 10, 1999 Adopted: May 10, 1999 Formerly (4-Track) Policy 6115, adopted March 11, 1974

CALENDARS IN CCSD Traditional Used in the majority of schools and has an August 20 (+/-) first day of classes for students and June 4(+/-) last day of classes for students. Fall and spring breaks are one week. Transitional Used in all new elementary schools that will likely move to a four-track, year-round calendar in the future. The transitional calendar begins one week earlier and ends one week later than the traditional calendar. Fall and spring breaks are two weeks. Year Round / 4-Track Used in some elementary schools while their neighborhood enrollment cannot be accommodated by a traditional calendar. C-track is coordinated with traditional/transitional fall break and B-track is coordinated with traditional/transitional spring break.

WHY 4-TRACK? FISCAL STEWARDSHIP Save the community the cost of additional schools saving $15 million per school not built. Schools are built at this size o As the district grows out and new schools are built, enrollment stabilizes Schools typically move off of 4-Track Large schools / additions would eventually be left under utilized adding long-term energy & maintenance liabilities

Year Round / 4-Track History in CCSD Antelope Ridge Canyon Creek Creekside Dakota Valley Eastridge Fox Hollow Highline Indian Ridge Mission Viejo Peakview Rolling Hills Sunrise Timberline Village East Moved off 4-track * 2006/07 Creekside 2007/08 Peakview Indian Ridge 2008/09 Mission Viejo Highline 2009/10 Sunrise 2010/11 Canyon Creek 2011/12 Timberline 2012/13 Rolling Hills Antelope Ridge Dakota Valley Eastridge Fox Hollow Village East Transitional Calendar Aspen Crossing Black Forest Hills Buffalo Trail Creekside Coyote Hills Pine Ridge Red Hawk Ridge Dakota Valley Eastridge Fox Hollow Red Hawk Ridge Village East Transitional Calendar Aspen Crossing Black Forest Hills Buffalo Trail Creekside Coyote Hills Pine Ridge

GROWTH AT PINE RIDGE Number of Students Full Time Equivalent Students School Capacity

GROWTH AT PINE RIDGE Number of Students Full Time Equivalent Students School Capacity ? ???? ???? Immediate problem Long Term Problem

PLAN FOR PINE RIDGE 1. Increase capacity at Pine Ridge without adding long-term liabilities 2. Utilize available space at other schools 3. Implement 4-Track at Pine Ridge All 3 strategies must be implemented due to current and future growth in the Pine Ridge area

INCREASE CAPACITY AT PINE RIDGE Preschool Gain 2 classrooms by moving preschool Mobile Classrooms If necessary, utilize additional mobile classrooms on a temporary basis to support transition to 4-track

UTILIZE AVAILABLE SPACE AT OTHER SCHOOLS Overflow new students to surrounding schools from certain neighborhoods beginning January 2013 New Families that move into a designated area / neighborhood are assigned to a different school than their boundary dictates Nothing changes for existing students unless by choice Transportation provided for students attending both Pine Ridge and the overflow schools Guaranteed completion of level for overflow students - with transportation Most recent utilization of this strategy Dakota Valley Aspen Crossing Currently Ongoing
