TASK: You are to create an 8-bar melody. PURPOSE: To create an effective melody through use of appropriate compositional devices and manipulation of music elements.

2 LENGTH: 8 BARS GENRE: Composition for a solo instrument AUDIENCE: Broad range of music listeners TASK CONDITIONS: It is to be written in treble clef It is to be written for flute, violin, keyboard or guitar. It is to be written with a 4/4 time signature (4 beats per bar). The chord progression of the melody is to be: G C D - G G C D G (one chord per bar) LITERACY REQUIREMENTS: Students are to: Manipulation of music elements and compositional devices to create a traditional music score.

3 YEAR 8 MUSIC COMPOSITION (MAKING) TASK You are to create an 8-bar melody in the treble clef (4/4 time signature), following the guidelines below. Select an instrument for your melody. (You are to choose from Flute, Violin, Guitar or Keyboard). Label this instrument at the left of the stave. A chord progression (G C D G G C D G) is provided, upon which your melody is to be built. Each bar of the melody is to fit with the chords shown above the stave. The notes from which you will select to use in each bar are written beneath the stave. (See below). The shape of your melody should not be too jumpy (angular). It should move up and down from one note to the next to pitches close by. For the rhythm of your melody, you may use only the crotchets, minims, quavers, and semiquavers. Bar 4 of your melody must end with either a minim or a semibreve note. You may compose Bars 5-7 of your melody the same/similar to Bars 1-3. This will provide UNITY. Your melody must finish with a G written as a minim note. You are to decide on a volume level for your melody, and indicate this under the first bar. (Hint: Check your handout DYNAMICS sheet to find some different dynamic (volume) levels. You are to decide on a tempo (speed) for your melody, and indicate this above the first bar. (Hint: Check your handout DURATION TEMPO sheet to find some different tempo (speed) terms.

4 You should aim to listen carefully to the sound of your melody, thinking about all of the steps you have been given to follow above. Your melody should be tuneful and balanced.
