Course Description: This is a basic course designed to enhance enjoyment and understanding of music for non-majors. No musical background is required. Musical elements will be introduced, as well as a survey of musical styles and masterpieces of Western music from the Middle Ages through to the present, with an emphasis on perceptive listening. Student Learning Outcomes:

2 Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Define and describe the basic elements of music, including rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre, texture, and expressive elements. 2. Identify compositional styles of major composers in Western music from the Middle Ages through the present. 3. Distinguish characteristics of major historical style periods and relate the musical expression to the culture of the period. Materials and Required Access Code: Computer with internet access. Notes for success: Standard Assignment #5 requires you to attend a symphony orchestra concert, opera performance, or musical with musicians in the pit. Find a concert ensemble such as the San Fernando Valley Symphony at Pierce College, the New West Symphony or a musical at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Disney Hall or the Los Angeles Opera at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. See what is performing at CSUN or the Valley Performing Arts Center. Remember to stay current with the lessons and quizzes. They have material that will show up on the midterm and final exams. Complete everything. Any work not turned in receives a 0 grade which is then averaged in with your other scores. Please note that this is a winter course and is over in 5 weeks.
