3 The Advanced Research Consortium (ARC) Initiative hosted at the Texas A&M University Overarching organization that provides support, coordination, and a set of evolving standards Composed of period-specific virtual research environments (VRE s), or nodes Mission To support the aggregation of high-quality, scholarly research materials To ensure the creation of, and adherence to, metadata standards To sustain Collex, TypeWright, and other software through various means To coordinate collaborative efforts within and between the ARC nodes Node s content Data about existing documents Scanned page images (with text transcriptions) Scholarly research related to the node s documents Teaching and research tools, including open-source software L. 8 Peer-review All ARC nodes offer peer reviewing for digital projects ARC nodes: utilize a set of general guidelines and criteria for review assemble editorial boards that contain some of the most respected scholars and digital humanists in the profession carefully review both the content and structure of each digital project submitted to the node ARC considers two questions pertinent to the peer review of scholarly digital resources: is the content important and interesting to existing scholarship? is the material presented in a clear, accessible, well-organized, and well-documented fashion? The evaluation produces legitimization for promotion and tenure The evaluation encourages community to recognize impact and work involved to produce project L. 9 Open questions The structure of MuSO remains to be defined Should it be partner to the ARC nodes? Should it be a dedicated partner to ARC itself? Music is a fairly small but quite heterogeneous community Can we represent it under one single node? If not, what criteria should be used for defining sub-nodes? By application type? By historical period? By material type? MuSO needs to relate itself to other existing entities What entities should it be? (e.g., IMS / AMS / IAML / ISMIR / MEI) How can this be achieved? The definition of a digital project in music has to be finalized Does it always include music notation? Schenker Documents Online ( letters from composer. 10 Open questions Requirement for a project to be peer-reviewed or to be aggregated are separate needs Can we have aggregation without peer review? Or reverse? It can be unclear where the link is between peer review and aggregation How would we review a collaborative work (e.g., the Music Encoding Initiative)? How would we aggregate a software component (e.g., the Verovio library)? The RDF schema will need to be modified E.g, <dc type> : add dataset, notated music, digital encoded music / modify or supplement codex Searching encoded music is highly complex and is a research field in itself What does full-text mean in this context? Aggregation require an item level definition What should be the aggregation granularity? Beethoven Werkstatt a couple of sources / RISM 1 million of sources What about relationships? A FRBRized model is necessary for digital music projects What can we learn from existing implementation of FRBR How would MuSO relate to other projects? L.
