Strands and strand units All teachers are familiar with the strands and strand units f the curriculum. We use The Right Nte as a framewrk t ensure that all aspects f the curriculum are taught. Teachers are hwever free t teach music using alternative methdlgies, as lng as the all the strands and strand units are cvered. T ensure cntinuity, prgressin and cnsistency frm class t class teachers refer t The Right Nte and the curriculum. Teachers are familiar with the musical cncepts - a sense f pulse, a sense f duratin, a sense f temp, a sense f pitch, a sense f dynamics, a sense f structure, a sense f timbre, a sense f texture, a sense f style - t be taught All three strands Listening and respnding, Perfrming and Cmpsing, cmprehensively cvered but emphasis will be given t Perfrming. We als recgnise that we need t develp in the area f Cmpsitin. We adpt a thematic apprach at certain stages f the year. e.g. Music week every secnd year, music integrated t Aistear in Infants. 2. Appraches and methdlgies All children actively engaged in music educatin in ur schl. Nt all teachers actively invlved in music educatin in ur schl; we emply a specialist music teacher in classes where we believe it is f benefit t thse particular classes. This teacher is familiar with and fllws the curriculum. There a psitive musical envirnment that encurages and values sharing f ideas, skills and resurces? Listening and respnding Children are prvided with pprtunities t listen and respnd t music e.g. experience a wide range f musical styles, traditins and cultures? Teachers prvide pprtunities fr active listening and respnding e.g. questining, prmpting suggesting, listening t shrt examples repeatedly Children are given pprtunities t respnd t music in a variety f ways which may include: Mving Talking abut Listening fr specific instruments and/r specific features Drawing and painting Fllwing/creating a pictrial scre f music Writing in respnse t music Cmpsing Singing r playing alng with music Musical games and/r actin sngs. 2

Opprtunities are prvided fr live perfrmances in class, at assembly and during external perfrmances frm 1sr Class up Listening Materials: a brad range f materials prvided Recrded music n vide, audi tape, CD r music technlgy Tuned and untuned percussin instruments Envirnmental bjects, such as assrtments f metals, wd r fibres Instruments f child/children in the class Meldic instruments recrder, tin whistle, pian, guitar, etc. Instruments f a musician n the staff, amng the parent bdy r in the lcality Perfrmance f a grup, ensemble, band, chir, rchestra visiting the schl r at anther venue. Materials are selected fr listening t and discriminating between envirnmental sunds and describing them in terms f their surce, pitch, dynamics, duratin and temp Recrded music is selected frm a wide range f surces. e.g. music frm written and unwritten traditins, classical and flk, music frm Ireland and ther cuntries, chral and instrumental, sl and ensemble, music fr different ccasins and purpses Perfrming We put particular emphasis n sng perfrming. All children sing in assembly - at least three times a week. There are Universal Chirs frm 1st t 4th Class and in 5th and 6th Class. The lwer universal chir participates in Córfhéile na Scileanna and Wesley. The upper chir participates in Wesley and Carl Singing in the Black Church at Christmas. Bth chirs sing at the annual schl Carl Service. In recent years there has been an annual Musical perfrmed by 6C. (This is currently nt scheduled fr 2016/17.) We are careful t ensure that all music cntent is f the highest relevant quality. In the Perfrming strand the fllwing are emphasised Active enjyable participatin Develpment f skills, understanding, knwledge particularly clear prnunciatin f vwels and cnsnants Fstering f children s attitude and interests Develpment f creativity. Sngs are taught taking the fllwing issues int cnsideratin Using vice, recrding, instrument, sheet music Teaching by ear Selecting the sng Matching the vcal range f the children Resurces. Effective singing skills are develped taking the fllwing int cnsideratin: Methdlgy f teaching Cnducting Imprving vcal quality Vcal exercises Hw are the fllwing encuraged - part singing, teaching runds, partner sngs (duet) and part sngs? (See Teacher Guidelines pp ). Currently pprtunities are prvided fr playing instruments e.g. recrder, tin whistle - in sme classes. We are ging t investigate intrducing an instrument learning mdule fr all pupils at a particular age level. 3

Integratin: Music is used in ther subjects, particularly in the yunger class e.g.rhymes Sngs are related t Aistear tpics 4. Assessment and recrd keeping Currently assessment f music t infrm the teaching and learning f music is very subjective. We recgnise a need t develp ur assessment skills t be able t better infrm future plans and t assess pupil prgress. This will be incrprated in the lng term Better Planning prject. We currently assess primarily fr engagement. 5. Children with different needs Activities are adapted and mdified s that all children can participate meaningfully in classrm music?
