This course covers: Note drill Five-finger patterns Scales; C scales patterns, slow, then fast; two octaves, hands together, slow then fast Chords and early level repertoire Improvisation on five fingers Student Learning Outcomes: Knowledge of major scales and chords Ability to read beginning level literature Coordination of hands together Connection of brain to hands Student Responsibility: Prepare assignment with: Steady beats Control of fingers Correct rhythms Accurate notes Correct scale fingerings Understanding of chords Accurate chord progressions Dynamics Effective musical playing Observance of markings in music Style of piece, use of pedal if applicable 1

2 If any of these elements are missing, the grade of assignment will reflect that lack of preparation. Requirements: No former keyboard experience Helpful to have played an instrument or sung music Required Text & Supplies: Alfred s Group Piano Book I Student is also required to supply ear phones and adaptor. Descriptions of major assignments and examinations: Weekly assignments of scales, literature, exercises, chords, will be heard individually and in front of class. Grading Policy: Student is graded on how well prepared they are and how well they play the assignment. Must have steady beat, rhythms correct, and accurate notes. Must attend class for an A. 0-2 absences B. 3-4 absences C. 5 or more D, repeat class Attendance Policy: Attendance is mandatory. If student is absent day of testing for whatever reason, assignment must be made and completed before or after classes within one week. If student knows they will be absent for a school activity, it is recommended they makeup the test before absence occurs. The only exceptions are extreme illness with doctor s excuse. Any other absences, see professor. Absences will factor into the final grade. There will be no makeup for class work missed during semester at the end of the semester. If work is not made up within a week after missed, grade on that assignment will be an F. Final Review Week: A period of five class days prior to the first day of final examinations in the long sessions shall be designated as Final Review Week. The purpose of this week is to allow students sufficient time to prepare for final examinations. During this week, there shall be no scheduled activities such as required field trips or performances; and no instructor shall assign any themes, research problems or exercises of similar scope that have a completion date during or following this week unless specified in the class syllabi. During Final Review Week, an instructor shall not give any examinations constituting 10% or more of the final grade, except makeup tests and laboratory examinations. In addition, no instructor shall give any portion of the final examination during Final Review Week. Classes are held as scheduled during this week and lectures and presentations may be given.
