2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Music City Youth Orchestra's mission is to attract and educate the youth of our community about the life importance of music. Background Founded by Walter Bitner, Tracy Silverman, and ten students in June 2007, MCYO now serves students in both middle school and high school with a string orchestra and a growing chamber music program. MCYO's musicians represent a broad array of backgrounds from across the metropolitan Nashville area; our current enrollment includes students grades 6 12 from fourteen different public and private schools as well as students from home schooling families. Our students include some of the most talented and accomplished young string musicians in Tennessee. Many have won honors for their musicianship including acceptance to and leadership at Tennessee Mid-State and All-State Orchestras, String Crossings at Belmont University, and the Tennessee Governor's School for the Arts. Hallmarks of our program include a high-energy, joyful atmosphere for musicmaking and an eclectic approach to programming that includes classical masterworks, jazz and rock standards, and traditional music from around the world. During our first eight seasons MCYO performed concerts at The Belcourt Theatre, Belmont University, Lipscomb University, Schermerhorn Symphony Center, The Tennessee Performing Arts Center, The Renaissance Center in Dickson, Tennessee, The Nashville Shakespeare Festival, and Centennial Park. The orchestra also had the rare opportunity to record at the prestigious Ocean Way Studios on Nashville's Music Row.The Harmony Project launched in January 2016 and is a music education outreach program inspired by the proven successful model of Venezuela's El Sistema. The Harmony Project creates opportunities for social transformation of underserved youth through the creative power of music. MCYO partnered with Project Reflect, Inc. for children attending the Smithson Craighead Academy's PREP after school program and has doubled in size with each new school year. MCYO also partnered with Valor Collegiate Academies and plans for expansion include adding one grade with new students each year at each school. Regular performances are held and instruction and instruments are offered free of charge. The Harmony Project program has gained the support of Nashville Mayor Megan Barry and is recognized by El Sistema USA as an active program member. Impact Music City Youth Orchestra has grown from a small group of middle school students wanting an eclectic educational approach to a full string orchestra program with two ensembles, and has established an after school music education outreach called the Harmony Project, Middle Tennessee's first El Sistema-inspired program. The Chamber Ensemble is now in its fifth season and is expected to have 20 students this season. The Concert Orchestra is the advanced string level ensemble with an expected 30 members in its tenth season. Past year accomplishments: Brought our first Young Leaders Council Intern onto the full governing Board. Our ensembles have shared their music at numerous venues around Nashville including Lipscomb University, Christ Presbyterian Church, Second Presbyterian Church, The Lodge at Natchez Trace Assisted Living Facility, Barton House Memory Care, The Meadows Retirement Home, and more. We expanded our reach into the community through new and existing partnerships that have allowed us to create exciting music collaborations. Partnerships from this past year included a collaborative concert with rock band DNK. Partnered with the Littlestone Summer Music Festival for a 2-week program for musicians of all instruments at Montgomery Bell Academy. MCYO is focusing on the camp's strings classes, and will offer bluegrass, chamber ensembles and strings technique courses.expanded our Corporate Sponsors to include NASBA, Reliant Bank, HCA TriStar/Health, Regions, Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, and PICA. Goals for the current season include: Hiring additional Teaching Artists to support MCYO's new after school music outreach program, the Harmony Project.Completing 1-year pilot program for the Harmony Project. The Harmony Project is an exemplary program for creating opportunities for low-income and minority youth to enjoy the benefits of learning and performing live music. Adding more talented young musicians to our current programs from the Nashville and surrounding Middle Tennessee area through school presentations and free master classes. Promoting community outreach projects intended to promote our programs into the community and reach a diverse group of audiences through concerts and performances. Providing high quality, comprehensive instrumental instruction that supports local academic institutions struggling to fund and provide music education programs. 2

Board Chair Statement We are excited about the future of MCYO now in its tenth year of serving Nashville area youth with two wonderful strings programs and an after school music outreach program. I enjoy watching our youth become enthusiastic about playing music. I know from my firsthand perspective, I have enjoyed watching my own daughter's interest and talent blossom playing the violin. MCYO has played a significant part in her musicianship. She has touched many lives through her music by volunteering to play at church, in nursing homes, and even in the waiting room of one of Nashville's clinics for low-income uninsured people. It is my joy to help lead an organization that is so committed to instilling this great love for music - and for sharing it! Please consider joining me in supporting MCYO either by supporting it financially or by volunteering. As we grow, we 3

4 need your help to reach more Nashville youth. -Mark McCaw, Immediate Past Board President (Dec. 2016) CEO Statement Music City Youth Orchestra is a caring, creative, community-focused organization with an unwavering belief in the power of music. Music and the arts move people toward positive living and creative learning, and MCYO's unique approach to music education is unmatched by any other local youth orchestra. Music City Youth Orchestra Guiding Principles Music making should be a joyful activity that proceeds out of love and respect. Students learn best when they take ownership of a project. Discipline and a rigorous approach to learning are most successful in an environment that also embraces enthusiasm, fun, and whimsy. Sustained relationships with practicing professional musicians inspire developing student musicians to put forth their best effort. Exploration of a diverse repertoire including a broad spectrum of western art music as well as traditional and popular styles is the most relevant approach for student musicians in the 21st century. Come see what makes MCYO Nashville's Eclectic Youth Orchestra! We welcome you to attend our season concerts and visit one of our weekly rehearsals. You will enjoy seeing how our Music Director and Chamber Ensemble Coordinator motivates and inspires young players to the highest level of performance.-scott Revo, Executive Director 4

5 Programs Programs MCYO - Concert Orchestra Description Music City Youth Orchestra is a string orchestra for advanced level string students. Founded in 2007 and drawing its members from throughout Middle Tennessee, MCYO has performed to delighted audiences and critical acclaim at many major venues throughout the Nashville metropolitan area. Hallmarks of the program include a high-energy, joyful atmosphere for music-making and an eclectic approach to programming that includes classical masterworks, jazz and rock standards, and traditional music from around the world. Budget 33,172 Category Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Music Instruction Population Served Children and Youth (0-19 years),, Program Success Monitored By Program success is measured by conducting an evaluation survey created by staff and approved by MCYO's Board of Directors and will be based on accomplishment of goals and meeting objectives. Parents and youth enrolled in MCYO programming will be asked to participate in the survey and results are reported annually to MCYO's Board of Directors and staff. MCYO - Chamber Ensembles Description In Chamber Ensembles, students learn about communicating well within a smaller ensemble and gain sight-reading, improvisational, and leadership skills that will in turn foster their confidence as a musician. Chamber Ensemble participation provides a foundation in the requisite skills for participation in orchestra and not only aids in music appreciation, but is also noted as a confidence builder among children. We believe it is essential to build outlets for youth to express themselves musically and the Chamber Ensemble program is one such outlet. Budget 8,367 Category Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Music Instruction Population Served Children and Youth (0-19 years),, Program Success Monitored By Program success is measured by conducting an evaluation survey created by staff and approved by MCYO's Board of Directors and will be based on accomplishment of goals and meeting objectives. Parents and youth enrolled in MCYO programming will be asked to participate in the survey and results are reported by semester and annually to MCYO's Board of Directors and staff. 5

6 MCYO - Harmony Project Description Pursuing its mission to attract and educate the youth of our community about the life importance of music, MCYO has established an after-school music education outreach called the Harmony Project. The Harmony Project is an exemplary program for creating opportunities for low-income and minority youth to enjoy the benefits of learning and performing live music. The Harmony Project is a unique social intervention which builds on the strengths of the community, using an intensive, ensemble-based music program. The Harmony Project is Middle Tennessee's first El Sistema-inspired program and includes two days of instruction per week for 60 minutes each day at one local charter school and 19 Friday Expedition classes for approximately 72 minutes each at our second local charter school. Budget 55,238 Category Population Served Short Term Success Long term Success Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Children Only (5-14 years), Poor,Economically Disadvantaged,Indigent, Blacks, African Heritage The purpose of the El Sistema-inspired Harmony Project is to strengthen individual youth competencies that promote pro-social, anti-aggressive, and civically minded behaviors, while simultaneously building social capital of the children's families. Some of the specific objectives are to strengthen executive function skill development and intrinsic motivation through collective musical ensemble learning, as well as to increase social capital through development of strong pro-social relationships with peers, parents, and other adults. An additional objective is to promote civic engagement of Harmony Project youth through the development of problem-solving and leadership skills that can be transferred into out-of program contexts. A five-year pro forma for the Harmony Project has been established and projects a fairly rapid growth trajectory moving from 50 students in year one to 540 students in year five. These plans include the expansion from one charter school to multiple charter and underperforming schools throughout Davidson and surrounding counties. The expense budget initiating this growth in year one is $161,000. Over the five year period, the pro forma also projects bringing average cost per student under $1,000 by year five. Program Success Monitored By Program Management of the Harmony Project: Project Reflect and Valor Collegiate Academies is primarily responsible for site management, scheduling, and evaluation of students. Music City Youth Orchestra is primarily responsible for program design, professional development, and programmatic evaluation. An evaluative component will be developed that collects pre- and post-data and makes it available for analyzing. Indicators will include at a minimum:attendance: excused absences and unexcused absences from regular school attendancegradestcap scores for Harmony students as a cohort compared to SCA and the districtbehavior reportsreasons for dropping out of The Harmony Project Examples of Program Success This program is set to begin in the fall of CEO Comments 6

7 We believe that music-making should be a joyful activity, both in rehearsal and performance. We employ a disciplined approach and strive for high standards of accomplishment while at the same time relaxing some of the more formal attitudes commonly associated with the orchestra. We aspire to create a collaborative effort where the musicians take ownership and contribute to the work of the group beyond simply learning their parts. The collective contributions of the members of the group determine the identity of the organization. We also make use of the invaluable resources that we have here in Music City through an eclectic approach to programming that explores a diversity of musical styles, and by seeking opportunities for the orchestra to collaborate with world-class professional musicians. Our programs provide dynamic orchestra and chamber music experiences for students in grades 5 through 12. All students who have not yet graduated from high school and who play violin, viola, cello, bass, or harp are encouraged to audition. 7

I'm excited to put my varied musical experiences to work for the Music City Youth Orchestra. Over the years, I've helped to create amazing concerts and music events of all kinds in some of the most iconic locations. Concerts are more than just the music. These experiences all add up to create a musical memory that will last a lifetime and that's what I hope we always do for our MCYO students.
