1 Clayfield College Music Handbook
2 CLAYFIELD COLLEGE MUSIC HANDBOOK Welcome to Clayfield Music Clayfield College has a long history in outstanding music education from the foundations of Pre-Prep all the way through to Year 12. We value music education as it not only provides students with a creative outlet and musical development, but has been proven scientifically to improve brain development, brain neuroplasticity, literacy and numeracy patterns as well as assisting with muscle and fine motor skills. The College s music education is based upon the Kodály Methodology, established by Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodály and the philosophy that music is a right and should be accessible to everyone. More than a third of the students at Clayfield College are involved in the Co-Curricular Music Program, with no less than seven choirs across the College from Years 2-12 and high-level band and string ensembles. 4 Clayfield Music Clayfield College has an exciting instrumental and vocal co-curricular music program and we would encourage your daughter/son to be involved in the many activities we provide. Clayfield Music has a large range of choirs, bands and string ensembles they can join along with a Private Tuition Program. The Private Tuition Program is open to all students - beginner through to advanced levels. We offer lessons for orchestral strings and piano (from Year 2 upwards); woodwind, brass and percussion (from Year 5 upwards); and voice (from Year 6 upwards). Placement in an instrumental ensemble is by audition. Auditions are held to determine placement in an ensemble that suits your daughter/son s level of experience and musical interests. For new students, please contact Ms Shannon Tobin, Director of Co- Curricular Music, or Mr Tim Opstelten, Co-ordinator of Bands, to organise an audition. Clayfield Music looks forward to another rewarding and busy year. We hope that your daughter/son chooses to be involved in the College s various musical opportunities including lessons, concerts, competitions, combined workshops, CD recordings and international tours. 9 Learning a Musical Instrument Loan of Instruments All students who enrol in the Clayfield College Instrumental Program are expected to participate in an instrumental ensemble to further enhance their ensemble performance skills. Owing to Clayfield College s emphasis on supportive skill development and individual student improvement in their instrument, tuition is available on woodwind, brass, percussion (from Year 4), piano and string instruments (from Year 2) and voice (from Year 6). Each instrument requires very different specific skills and ensemble involvement is more rewarding for all involved where students are improving consistently with the assistance of the specialist instrumental tutors at Clayfield College. Private Lessons These are most beneficial in giving your daughter/son the focus of the teacher s expertise. Students are expected to participate in a College ensemble. Terms and conditions of this program are stated on the Private Tuition Enrolment Form. Students are prepared for Trinity College/AMEB exams if desired. The College has a limited number of instruments available for loan to students. The hire fee for one year is $260. Availability of College instruments cannot be guaranteed. The following points should be noted: A loan agreement/indemnity form is required to be signed by a parent/caregiver before an instrument is issued to a student. That form contains conditions of the loan. Loans will be for a period of one school year. Extension of loan will be considered by the Director of Co-curricular Music/Co-ordinator of Bands in consultation with the instrumental music tutor. Maintenance due to normal wear and tear on a College instrument will be the responsibility of the College. Any costs incurred due to loss of or damage to a College instrument is the responsibility of the hirer. Duration: 30 minutes each week Cost: Subject to the MTAQ rates (cost is $35.00 per 30-minute lesson). Please contact the Director of Co-curricular Music or the Co-ordinator of Bands for more details. MUSIC HANDBOOK 9
10 CLAYFIELD COLLEGE MUSIC HANDBOOK Terms and Conditions Lessons will be provided weekly for a 30-minute duration. These lessons will rotate throughout the school day for all students. Senior students and students who learn two instruments may be provided with one lesson outside of school time. Students who do not attend their lesson without appropriate prior notice will not receive a makeup lesson. If a student is wishing to discontinue lessons, notice must be given two weeks before the end of the school term. This notice must be in writing and given to the Director of Cocurricular Music/Co-ordinator of Bands. Late cancellation of lessons will result in a half-term cancellation fee. Where possible, the student may be able to hire a College instrument for one year, at the cost of $260; however, as the number of available instruments is limited, once these have been allocated, students will be required to provide their own. Instruments will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Requirements for the users of College instruments are found on the Hire Agreement Form. Students in Years 2-6 will have their music lesson recorded in their Music Diary. Students should bring to their first lesson a copy of their class schedule. Please ensure the tutor is notified if your contact details change throughout the course of the year.
