2 Presenting Summer Our 76th Instrument Season! Garden The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to providing quality orchestral programming that promotes opportunities for enjoyment and expands interest in and understanding of diverse music. The symphony is a cultural asset that serves as a unifying force for Northwest Indiana communities. This year we will present an exciting season of educational music programs that have been influenced by other cultures. This year's Education Concert, Hispanic Themes, will take place in October and feature the music of Spain and South America. This season's Open Rehearsal will feature The Mikado by Gilbert & Sullivan. The Mikado is a comedic opera that transports the audience to Victorian England, by way of Japan. We will also be continuing the Music Educator Award, celebrating an outstanding music educator from Northwest Indiana and our Composition Competition for Indiana-based composers. Learn more at. 3 Hispanic Themes Toot & Doodle Tuesday, November 7, 2017 Center for Visual & Performing Arts October 24, 2017, 9:30am & 11:30am Star Plaza Theatre, $6 per person SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE Join the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and Youth Orchestra on a journey tracing the influence of Spanish and Mexican music on the world. The annual Education Concert, taking place at the Star Plaza Theater, is curated just for a young audiences. These concerts target elementary and middle school students. Prior to the concert, schools are provided learning materials for the teachers, students and parents. These materials will prepare the younger and older audience members for the concert by giving background information on the composers, the musicians and the music. This year's concert will feature composers from Spain, Mexico, France and the United States. Mikado The OPEN REHEARSAL Featuring Alisa Jordheim, soprano; Justin Berkowitz, tenor; Michael Orlinsky, baritone; other guest vocalists, and the Symphony Chorus Thursday, October 26, 2017, 7:00pm The Auditorium at Bethel Church GILBERT & SULLIVAN The Mikado Visit Victorian England, by way of Japan, in Gilbert & Sullivan s hilarious, and most popular, opera. Crazy laws, haughty noblemen, young love and a secret prince all mix together in this comic tale of love and honor meant to poke fun at English society. This lightly staged production will feature talented guest singers and our Symphony Chorus as they bring the silly hijinks to life. Grade: 2nd & 3rd Registration Deadline: October 20, 2017 Cost: $6 per student Students will have the opportunity to try their hand at playing real musical instruments as well as receive the opportunity to join an art instructor in an art class through collaboration between the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and South Shore Arts. The music portion of Toot & Doodle features an educational video presentation, as well as a musical petting zoo," overseen by students from VanderCook College of Music where children have the opportunity to hear, touch and play musical instruments from the woodwind, brass, percussion, and string families. The art class consists of a music-related art activity for the children to enjoy. A South Shore Arts instructor provides activities based on how music and visual art can influence one another. Musical instruments provided by Quinlan & Fabish Music of Valparaiso. This program meets Indiana State Standards 1, 3, 6, and 8. Art & Music Educator Award Nominations due Friday, March 16, 2018 More music teachers are role models for minority students than The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra is excited to announce teachers of any other the Award for Excellence in Art & Music Education. This award is subject." JOURNAL OF presented annually to recognize an outstanding educator in music and an out standing educator in visual arts. Nominees should be both advocates for the success of students and champions of arts education. The recipients receives a commemorative plaque and will be recognized at our season closing concert on May 10, RESEARCH IN MUSIC EDUCATION Parents, students and community members are encouraged to submit nominations of impactful Art & Music Educators, accompanied by letters of recommendation.

4 The Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Philip Bauman, is excited to announce the 2017/18 Composition Competition. The selected score will be performed at the season closing concert in May The composition may be no more than ten (10) minutes in duration (movements from larger works are acceptable). The work must have been composed after The submitted work may not have received performance by a professional orchestra (annual budget over $1,000,000) Only one submission per composer will be permitted. Formatting and layout of orchestral scores and parts must adhere to the Major Orchestra Librarians Association Guidelines of Music Preparation Composition should be appropriate for youth orchestra (Grade 5 maximum) Eligibility: The competition is open to Indiana-born or current resident composers who are born after June 1, Entries must be postmarked, or sent via , no later than November 1, Rhythm & Hues Tuesday, March 20, 2018 Center for Visual & Performing Arts Grade: 1st & 2nd Registration Deadline: March 2 Cost: $6 per student Join us as students learn the story of The Little Red Hen. Students use the story to learn rhythms in language and sounds of per cussion instruments. They will receive the opportunity to join an art instructor in an art class through the collaboration between the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and South Shore Arts. Children will be made aware of the sounds and rhythms that surround them. Rhythm will be learned through word phrases and then the children will have an opportunity to play them on wood, metal, skin and melody percussion instruments. The art class consists of a music related art activity for the children to enjoy. This program meets Indiana State Standards 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8. Youth Orchestra Concerts Competition Young People's Composition Competition AUDITION DATES FRIDAY, MAY 18, :00PM - 7:00PM SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2018, 10:00AM - 2:00PM **If all time slots fill up, new time slots will be added PERFORM AT A NWIS CONCERT! Winners will play their piece (2 minutes maximum) at a classical, pops, education, outreach or summer concert within 18 months following the competition. 5 Guest Artist Pre-Concert Lectures Outreach Available for all schools, year round, the Guest Artist Outreach program is designed to bring professional musicians into area schools. This program not only enhances appreciation of the arts but also encourages participation in existing school music programs. Register for a Guest Artist to visit your school free of charge. GUEST ARTIST EVENTS ARE PROVIDED FREE TO THE NORTHWEST INDIANA COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS Members of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra or guest artists are available to perform concerts, present workshops, and serve as coaches at your school. These presentations last between minutes. Contact the Education Coordinator to schedule a visit by one of our Guest Artists. Join Maestro Kirk Muspratt as he takes the audience on a journey through the history of the music and the composer for the evening's concert. These events often have guests to aid in the discussion.
