1 September 2017 Volume 42, Number 7 NEW BAND, FAMILIAR FACES AND CLASSIC JAZZ ON SEPTEMBER 17th!! by George Swinford Above: Dave Loomis To introduce trombonist Dave Loomis new band, I can hardly do better than to quote that band s first press release. With slight editorial revisions, here it is: America is restless. It wants jazz... Traditional jazz...san Francisco jazz... from the 1940s. Luckily for America, a brand new band has just that kind of jazz. Emulating the style of the Lu Watters Yerba Buena Jazz Band, from the Dawn Club and Hambone Kelly s, and the golden age of San Francisco jazz, it s the Good Herb Jazz Band (Good Herb--Yerba Buena...get it?). It consists of the usual suspects of Seattle area veterans, along with some superb musicians that may be new to you. This is raucous, fun, and exciting music that goes great with beer and barbecue, and thank God for that! Join us as we plumb the depths of newly-edited and engraved arrangements of rags, stomps, blues and more, lifted directly from Lu Watters original charts. Come join us for some real jazz, as it was meant to be played! That pretty much says it all, but just to elaborate a bit, here are the usual suspects and superb new players that will be bringing us this historical stuff: On trumpets we ll hear Dave Holo and Michael Van Bebber, echoing Lu Watters and Bob Scobey. Leader Dave Loomis will be on trombone and, completing the front line, Jacob Zimmerman will play clarinet. Paul Hagglund will play tuba and Kevin Johnston will be on banjo. Ray Skjelbred has years of Frisco-style playing behind him. His piano and Mike Daugherty s authentic drumming will complete the rhythm section. Dave Loomis acquired the entire original book of the legendary Lu Watters band. He has re-scored each arrangement on computer (mainly for legibility), corrected errors and re-done the notation so today s players can read it down more easily. He then rechecked each arrangement against the original YBJB recordings and made any necessary further corrections. Truly, this has been a labor of love! We begin our fall concert season with music from the trad revival of the 40s, that turned many of us on to jazz in the first place. Join us once again, at the Ballard Elks on Sunday the 17th, and hear the Good Herb Jazz Band lay down some of the real stuff! Members, in participating in our raffles you sent: Liam Anderson a Bass player, who has been playing / studying for 5 years on the bass. He s from Snohomish, WA and attends Snohomish High School and Jai Lasker a guitar player, who has been playing / studying for 5 years on the guitar. He lives in Lynnwood, WA and attends Edmonds-Woodway High School. Board members, you all so readily came forward to help me in the decision of a camp to take the place of our Heebee Jeebee Camp which ended last year. After many s, and many phone calls to camps from Canada, California, and back East, we decided this year on the Shoreline Jazz Camp. Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council Summer Camp. I met with Lorie Hofman, Executive Director and corresponded with Kellie Lie Arts Educational Manager. I attended the 1 st of two culminating concerts the morning of August 11 th and was so impressed. Verns Eriks stated in her Hi Joanne, I just got back from the 7pm jazz concert. Boy, was that fun!! These kids are good musicians, about nine different ensembles, then they all played in about 4 different big band groups. It was a real treat! We have to continue supporting them. I also talked with Kelly for a few moments. I am still receiving notes of new camps being formed, so I will keep looking for next year. In Gratitude. The band leaders have shown me numerous different perspectives on playing, practicing, and soloing, all of which I plan to incorporate in my future years of playing jazz. The individual instructors each have a wealth of knowledge that they are eager to share, and I have learned how to improve my personal playing and sound as well as how to interact in different situations playing with other people. This week has been invaluable for my education as a jazz musician, I had the chance to play with amazing musicians (both the pres and my fellow students) and that alone taught me more than I could have hoped for, the camp forced me to push myself to my own limits as a sight-reader, rhythm guitarist, accompanist, and improviser. The week has opened my mind to new ways of thinking when it comes to a traditional jazz setting. I ve learned exercises and workouts to not only warm-up, but to also push my chops. My work with Dave and Jim has really made me more comfortable with high-level literature. I was lucky enough to make it to the top combo and big band I had fun pushing myself to greater heights as a musician. Again, thank you for everything. 4 Page 4 AMERICA S CLASSIC JAZZ FESTIVAL, 2017 PART 1 by Doug Parker This year s A.C.J.F. was, as always (maybe more than ever) an artistic, and, we are happy to report, also a financial success, thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate sponsors. This ensures not only that there will be another festival in 2018, but enough money was raised to enable the Greater Olympia Dixieland Jazz Society to make a VERY generous contribution to the cause of sending deserving young music students to the jazz camp (a humorous sidelight to this will be mentioned later). The quality of music was excellent, with each of the bands this writer heard having a character of its own. It was impossible to hear them all - the decision had to be made - go to venue A to hear band X, or to venue B to hear band Y, or to venue C to hear band Z. (Your writer must confess that due to the abnormally HOT weather that weekend, he accidentally-on-purpose avoided the tent, which unfortunately resulted in missing some good sets). There was a wide variety of sounds, all under the umbrella of Our Kind of Music - the righteous New Orleans (by way of Great Britain) four-beat sounds of the Grand Dominion Jazz Band, the good time two-beat of the High Sierra Jazz Band (perhaps they have inherited the title of America s Favorite Jazz Band from the famed Firehouse Five Plus Two!) - the Boston sound of the Wolverines, in the tradition of the Yankee Rhythm Kings and the Paramount Jazz Band, featuring Jimmy Mazzy s excellent singing and banjo-picking - the CanUS band, with their unorthodox instrumentation of two reeds and a trumpet in the front line (no trombone, except for the set on which they were joined by CanUS alumnus Jim Armstrong, now with the Grand Dominion band) - the unique sounds of Ivory and Gold, with Jeff (piano) and Anne (flute) Barnhart joined by great banjoist/guitarist and great guy Eddie Erickson - the hot dance music of Josh Duffee s Graystone Monarchs, with sidemen selected from the various festival bands. And our three great Pacific Northwest bands, the Black Swan band from Portland (unfortunately, on the set your correspondent heard, talented and entertaining vocalist Marilyn Keller had not yet arrived) - the Evergreen Classic Jazz Band from Seattle, with a fine mixture of veteran players (leader-bass man Tom Jacobus, pianist Ray Skjelbred, cornetist-reed man Steve Wright, trombonist Dave Loomis and drummer-singer Mike Daugherty) joined by two talented young men, who will be the subject of my next paragraph - and, of course the Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band, great as always, especially with the addition of Turk Murphy s longtime cornetist Bob Schulz on most sets. Notes from the Prez September is here and we re celebrating with a brand new band. Yes, we all will miss Bob Schulz and his merry band, but I m sure the Good Herb Jazz Band will fill the bill very nicely. After much deliberation your Board voted not to continue asking for sponsorships in order to cover the travel and performance expenses for the Bob Schulz Band this year. Change is the word for this year. We have our election in December and have a few empty chairs on the Board. Now is your chance to help make the decisions for the Society. Please let me know in writing ( ) if you d like to be added to the ballot. We need to have 12 people on the board. We have four meetings each year when decisions are discussed and made. New ideas are always welcome so we d like to hear from you. The other change is that I will be stepping down from the Presidency in December. My recent health situation makes it impossible to continue. It s been 13 wonderful years and I ve enjoyed each one of them to the fullest. The Board members have been great covering the bases I used to manage and I thank them sincerely. I ll still be at our Sunday Jazz at the Elks whenever I can, I m not totally giving up on the great music and wonderful friends but trying to be a responsible patient.
