1 AUDITION INFORMATION Audition slots will last no longer than 15 minutes and candidates should prepare the following depending on their instrument. In addition, all candidates will be asked to prepare orchestral excerpts (please be aware these may change between now and the audition date). Candidates may also be asked to sight-read. All Strings: Baroque only, Romantic only, or Baroque and Romantic Flute (classical ( key and 19th century keyed flute) and Clarinet: Classical and 19th Century Oboe, Bassoon, Horn and Timpani: Baroque, Classical and Romantic (as 1 scheme) Unless indicated, a harpsichord (Baroque: A=415) and fortepiano (Classical and Romantic: A=430) will be provided with an accompanist on the day. There will not be an opportunity for a run-through prior to the audition. You cannot bring your own accompanist. Candidates selected for audition will be required to let us know a week in advance of the audition the title of any piece that needs accompaniment. Candidates should provide their own music and music for accompanist for any solo pieces. INSTRUMENT & MUSIC INFORMATION Violin o Handel, Messiah - Rejoice, Piffa, and If God be for us o Handel, Samson Overture - from the beginning to bar 19 in the Allegro Romantic only - candidates will be asked to prepare two contrasting Classical and/or Romantic movements as well as the orchestral excerpts. Modern setup in A=430 with 3 gut strings for Romantic, with appropriate tourte model bows with or without ferrule. Orchestral excerpts below: o Mendelssohn, Scottish Symphony - First movement: beginning to bar 85 and bars 447 to 468; Second movement: opening to bar 89 and bars 256 to the end; Third movement: opening to bar 32. o Smetana, The Bartered Bride Overture - first page and last page (on IMSLP) o Dvorak, New World Symphony - Third movement (Scherzo): bar 20 to the repeat mark; Fourth movement: last page from 8 bars after figure 10 to 14 bars after figure 12 o Brahms, Symphony No.1 First movement: beginning to the 6/8, and bars ; Second movement: opening to bars 39; Fourth movement: bars Baroque and Classical and/or Romantic era as well as the orchestral excerpts. Candidates who do not wish to bring two cellos may choose to play everything at one pitch: A=430 with fortepiano accompaniment or A=415 with harpsichord accompaniment. Please bear this in mind when choosing your solo pieces. Double bass auditions will be at A=415, accompanied by harpsichord only. 4 Flute (classical key and 19th century keyed flute) Flautists will be asked to play from a selection of pieces, orchestral excerpts and studies on two of the following flutes: classical 4-8 key and 19th century keyed. Please indicate on your application form which flutes you will be auditioning on. A=430 to be accompanied by the fortepiano. Orchestral excerpts: o Mendelssohn, Symphony No.3 in A Scottish (mvts 1 & 2) o Brahms, Symphony no.1 in C (complete) Solo pieces o Mozart, Flute Concerto in G or D (choose two movements to prepare) o Kohler, Kuhlau, Andersen (or similar) - Etude or salon piece Oboe Candidates will be asked to prepare two contrasting pieces of the candidate s choice from two different periods as well as the appropriate orchestral excerpts. Pitches: Baroque A= 415, Classical A = 430 and Romantic A= Orchestral excerpts: o Bach, St Matthew Passion, no. 20 'Ich will bei meinem Jesu wachen' o Mozart, Entführung, Andante from the Overture, and solo sections from no. 11 'Martern aller Arten' o Brahms, Violin Concerto, 2nd mvt first 30 bars. o Dvorak, New World Symphony, first movement Clarinet Candidates should prepare the first movement of Mozart Clarinet Concert in A KV622 up to the end of bar 153 plus a contrasting piece of the candidate s choice. A=430 to be accompanied by the fortepiano. There are no orchestral excerpts. Bassoon Candidates will be asked to prepare two contrasting pieces of the candidate s choice from two different periods as well as the appropriate orchestral excerpts. 5 Horn Candidates will be asked to prepare one of the following pieces: first movement of either Mozart K.417, K.447 or K.495, Ferdinand Ries Sonata 3rd Movement, any Caprice from Gallay Grands Caprices Op 32 as well as the orchestral excerpts. A=430 to be accompanied by the fortepiano. Orchestral excerpts: o Beethoven, Symphony No. 9, 3rd movement (bars 83-99, 4th horn part) o Beethoven, Symphony No. 9, 4th movement (entire movement, 3rd horn part) o Berlioz, Roméo et Juliette, Scéne d'amour, No. 2 Nuit sereine (bars , 3rd horn part) o Berlioz, Roméo et Juliette, Scéne d'amour, No. 2 Nuit sereine (entire movement, 4th horn part) o Mendelssohn, Midsummer Night s Dream, Nocturne (entire movement, 1st horn part) o Mendelssohn, Symphony No. 3, 3rd movement (horn solo, 3rd horn part) Timpani The format of timpani auditions will differ from other instruments. Timpani auditions will consist of orchestral excerpts and candidates may be asked to play along to recordings; there will be a list to prepare and also some un-prepared excerpts of very well-known works from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. In addition, candidates may be asked a few questions on equipment and repertoire. The relevant drums will be provided at the auditions so there is no need for candidates to bring their own. It is not necessary to own period timpani in order to take part in the scheme.
