2 23rd of September, 2008 The best estimate from the limited data we have available suggests that this maybe between 2.5 and 10 million people in EU. Those are the individuals listening to music over 1 hour a day at high volume control setting.

3 4.5 Summary Amongst all tested PMP s there is only one sample that does not exceed the sound pressure level of 85 db(a) and the output voltage of 27 mv. Although the sample not necessarily needs one of the additional user protections it has a warning text and label. From those PMP s that exceed the 85 db(a) and 27 mv only 12 fulfill all additional user protections and hence fulfill the standard requirements. 18 out of 31 PMP s do not fulfill the standard requirements completely. Although 14 PMP s do not exceed 100 db(a) and 150 mv some of the other additional user protections are still missing. Four PMP s produce a output voltage above 150 mv. Two of those lack any other additional user protection. Given the results it can be remarked that most PMP s carry a risk even though their maximum sound pressure level and maximum output voltage is between 85 db(a) / 27mV and 100 db(a) /150 mv respectively. For these particular samples prolonged listening still can cause hearing damage. For those PMP s that do not fulfill the requirements for additional user protection the user is not protected and warned insufficiently for that risk PMP s produce a maximum output voltage above 150mV. Their maximum sound pressure remains below 100 db(a). At one PMP s in particular even below 85 db(a). The package it self may considered as safe. However, when the PMP is used with an other headphone, sold separately and with other electric properties than the headphone in the package, it can occur that the sound pressure level exceeds 100 db(a).
