2 INTRODUCTION This booklet has been produced in order to assist centres preparing candidates for the existing WJEC s specifications for GCE dvanced/dvanced Subsidiary examinations and the new suite of Eduqas specifications. Its main purpose is to provide a summary of the assessment, the codes, the units offered (including their weightings, maximum raw and US scores, where applicable) and a list of permissible combinations. ssessment opportunities will be available in the (summer) assessment period each year, until the end of the life of the specification. New GCE EDUQS qualifications first teaching from September 2017 specifications Following on from the introduction of a new suite of reformed qualifications in 2015 and 2016, working with Ofqual, WJEC has produced a further suite of reformed qualifications (6 subjects) that have been developed and accredited under the "Eduqas" brand. These reformed qualifications for first teaching from September 2017, will be available to schools and colleges in England, Isle of an, Channel Islands, Northern Ireland and the independent sector in Wales and are tabulated within the directory. The corresponding legacy subjects will be withdrawn in September 2017 and the last full legacy qualification series availability as well as final "certification dates" following re-sit only sessions are tabulated within the directory. Current or legacy specifications either comprise 3 units for the dvanced Subsidiary award and 6 units for the dvanced level, or 2 units for the dvanced Subsidiary and 4 units for the dvanced level. GCEs in pplied Subjects are currently being offered. Some of these offer double awards at dvanced Subsidiary and dvanced level (pages 53-59). New GCE specifications consist of different numbers of component combinations for dvanced Subsidiary and dvanced level: 1 dvanced Subsidiary component, 2 dvanced Level components rt and Design 2 dvanced Subsidiary components, 2 dvanced Level components Design and Technology 2 dvanced Subsidiary components, 3 dvanced Level components Business, Computer Science, Drama, Economics, Electronics, Law, Physical Education, Psychology, Sociology 3 dvanced Subsidiary components, 3 dvanced Level components Film Studies, French, German, edia Studies, usic, Religious Studies, Spanish 2 dvanced Subsidiary components, 4 dvanced Level components Biology, Chemistry, English Language, English Language and Literature, English Literature, Geography, Geology, Physics. The booklet should be read in conjunction with the following documents: GCE examinations legacy GCE unitised S and level specifications. 3 SUBJECT ISSUES rt & Design arks for all components in rt & Design are now submitted electronically on the secure website, as for all coursework components and should be submitted by 31 st ay. Centres may enter candidates for rt, Craft and Design or for any of the other specialist titles (Fine rt, Graphic Communication, Textile Design, 3D Design, Photography, Critical & Contextual Studies). It is important to note when submitting entries that the aggregation (i.e. cash in) entry and all the component entries must be from the same specialist title. WJEC will be unable to award certificates to candidates who have completed different specialist title components, or a mixture of rt, Craft and Design and other specialist title components. Please refer to the S and level rt & Design administration booklet for further details. Design and Technology Candidates are only permitted to complete the dvanced level in the same focus area as that completed for the dvanced Subsidiary.e.g. a candidate claiming certification in dvanced Subsidiary: Product Design ( ) after completing S units and , is only permitted to take 2 units and and claim dvanced level Design and Technology: Product Design ( ). Candidates should not be allowed to enter more than one of the subject areas in any academic year. Religious Studies (Legacy) Because of the large number of options available, particular care is needed regarding permissible combinations. Centres are therefore urged to pay particular attention to the permissible combination tables on pages when entering for these subjects. athematics and Further athematics (Legacy) Permissible combinations for subject awards are listed on pages 37 and 38. The level subject Pure athematics may not be taken at the same sitting as any other athematics subject at S or level. The maximum numbers of awards possible for a given number of units are as follows: Three units : one S certificate Six units : two certificates (one S and one ; or two S) Nine units : three certificates (two S and one ) Twelve units : four certificates (two S and two ). 3

4 RELTIONSHIP BETWEEN UNIT WEIGHTINGS ND UNIFOR RK SCLE (CURRENT OR LEGCY SPECIFICTIONS ONLY) The Uniform ark scale (US) is used in unitised specifications as a device for reporting, recording and aggregating candidates' unit assessment outcomes. The US is used so that candidates who achieve the same standard will have the same uniform mark, irrespective of when the unit was taken. Individual unit results and the overall subject award will be expressed as a uniform mark on a scale common to all GCE qualifications. The maximum uniform mark for any unit depends on that unit's weighting in the specification. The uniform marks obtained for each unit are added up and the subject grade is based on this total. The document GCE US Guide provides a detailed explanation of the uniform mark scale and its relationship to raw marks and can be found within the Exams Officer page of the WJEC website.(within "Related documents", "Results"). CURRENT OR LEGCY SPECIFICTIONS Two unit S and four unit level Two unit S subjects have 200 total marks available and four unit level subjects have 400 uniform marks. The table below illustrates the relationship between the uniform mark scale and each S/ level grade for the unit. 5 Three unit S and 6 unit levels Three unit S subjects have 300 total marks available and six unit level subjects have 600 uniform marks. The table below illustrates the relationship between the uniform mark scale and each S/ level grade for the unit. The weightings for these units are included in the tables above. The dvanced Double award will consist of 8 units with a total of 800 marks. 6 Grade scales NB. The GCE dvanced Subsidiary qualification (Single award for pplied subjects) will be reported on a five grade scale;, B, C, D and E. The level of demand of the S examination is that expected of candidates half way through a full level course. The GCE dvanced Level qualification (and Single award for pplied subjects) will be reported on a six-grade scale of *,, B, C, D and E. The award of * at level will provide recognition of the additional demands presented by the 2 units in terms of stretch and challenge and synoptic requirements. The S Double award qualification will be reported on a nine- grade scale, B, BB, BC, CC, CD, DD, DE, EE. The level Double ward qualification will be reported on an eleven-grade scale; **, *,, B, BB, BC, CC, CD, DD, DE, EE. Candidates who fail to reach the minimum standard for grade E are recorded as U (unclassified) and do not receive a certificate. Unit grades will be reported as a lower case letter a to e on results slips but not on certificates. t level, Grade * will be awarded to candidates who have achieved a Grade in the overall level qualification and who have also achieved at least 90% of the total uniform marks for the 2 units. For the applied level double award, there will be an ** and an * grade. In each case, learners will need to achieve an grade overall. The ** grade will be awarded to those achieving 90 per cent or more of the maximum uniform mark on the aggregate of all of the 2 units. The * will be awarded to those achieving 90 per cent or more of the maximum uniform mark on the aggregate of the best 50% of the 2 units. For current and legacy specifications, candidates may re-sit units prior to certification for the qualification, with the best of the results achieved contributing to the qualification. Individual unit results, prior to certification of the qualification have a shelf-life limited only by the shelf-life of the specification. candidate may retake the whole qualification more than once. EDUQS SPECIFICTIONS New EDUQS specifications are "linear" qualifications in which all assessment must be taken at the end of the course. ssessment opportunities will be available in the summer series each year until the end of the life of the specification. Where candidates wish to re-sit the qualification, candidates must resit all examination components in the same series. Non examination assessment (NE) components can be re-taken or the mark carried forward. n NE mark can be carried forward for the lifetime of the specification. Within the lifetime of the specification, there is no limit to the number of times that a candidate may re-take the qualification. S qualifications are reported as a grade on the scale from to E. Results not attaining the minimum standard for the award will be reported as U (Unclassified). S qualifications are free-standing and are awarded in their own right. ssessments at S cannot contribute to an level grade.
