Last year we had about 130 alumni, family, staff and community members in our organization. We contributed tens of thousands of dollars to fund clinicians, guest conductors, hospitality, ArtsFest and sheet music. We purchased three violins and two violas for the orchestra. Over the summer, we purchased two bass clarinets, replaced a drum set (that FMA purchased 9 years ago) and funded a large instrument storage locker for the band room. On top of the direct support, FMA volunteers provide an even more important gift our time. We help outfit the orchestra, choir and bands by sizing kids for uniforms. We provide punch and sweets at all of the kids' concerts. Our marching band VPs manage fifty volunteers' efforts on home football games and away competitions. No kidding thousands of hours of support. We are a fantastic organization. Pat yourselves on the back. Thank one another. You may not yet know we've got a new fundraiser this year a trivia competition. Also, the annual Floral Design Showcase has moved to November. We're providing leadership to help kids fund raise for their trips cookie dough sales planning has already started. Hospitality is kicking in all the kids have concerts this month. We've got a ton going on so there is always room for more volunteers. If you want to get involved, we can use you I promise. Please consider coming to a meeting and finding out what we're about. Our first one is Tuesday, September 15, at 7pm in the band room. Welcome to an exciting year! Rob Coleman Fremd Music Supporter fremdmusicpresident@gmail.com p.s. I also want to take a moment to thank our sibling Viking Booster organization. They too are huge supporters of the arts at Fremd. As part of over $100,000 on the Principal's wish list, this year they funded the fledgling Show Choir with choreography and music, they continued their annual support of ArtsFest and purchased a new baritone saxophone for the bands. Please consider membership.

2 FMA Page 2 BAND NOTES Dear FMA Band Families, The school year is off to a great start with our five symphonic bands at Fremd High School. Welcome to all of our new Freshmen band families that have just joined FMA and the Music Department! Our band program consists of 275 students enrolled in five separate bands Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Symphonic Winds, Wind Ensemble, and Wind Symphony. This year also marks the tenth consecutive year of having 250 or more students in the Fremd Band program! We have much planned for this year and are excited about our upcoming performances and events. Please visit our new Fremd Band website at: Sometimes music is the only thing that gets your mind off of everything else. Freshmen Student/Parent Orientation Please join us on Wednesday September 16 th (6:00 8:00 pm) if you have a freshman student enrolled in our Concert Band or Symphonic Band. This meeting is for all freshmen students and parents. The transition from junior high to high school band can be somewhat overwhelming; we hope that our meeting will address numerous questions that you might have. We plan on discussing the following topics at the meeting: Fremd Band Handbook, Band performances/obligations, homework and grading, private lessons, Fremd Music Association, student fundraising, Pep Band season, Jazz Bands, Solo and Ensemble Festival, proposed future Band trips, and much more. We hope that you can join us for this important meeting! The Viking Marching Band is off to a great fall season! The Hero Within fall competition show consists of almost nine minutes of exciting music, 70 formations, 4 flag changes, spinning rifles, and countless memorable moments. The 115 members of the VMB have been working hard to complete the show and we are impressed with the progress so far. This fall we will perform at Stagg High School, Wheaton North High School, Benedictine University, and Illinois State University. Please come out and support the VMB at a home football game or at one of the competitions. A big thank you to all of the FMA parents that assist with the VMB throughout the fall season! On Monday September 28 th we will present our Fall Band Showcase Concerts featuring all five symphonic bands performing a wide variety of band music and styles. The concerts are free and will be held at 6:00 and 7:30 pm in the Fremd Cafeteria. Our Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble will perform at 6:00 pm, followed by the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Symphony performing at 7:30 pm. We are very proud to be able to present a full symphonic concert this early in the school year. We hope to see you there! Auditions for the Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Ensemble will be held the last week of October and first week of November. Please encourage your student to audition for the bands and to extensively prepare any music given to them (late October). Due to the amount of students interested, auditions tend to be competitive for both groups. The directors will pass out audition packets around the second week of October. More info will be posted on the new Fremd Jazz Bands website: bands.html We re on the Web Fremdmusic.org

In addition, students should prepare one vocal part on The Star Spangled Banner. Auditions packets and music are available in Room 17 on the choir board. I will also be looking for instrumentalists for the show choir combo at the beginning of November (piano, drumset, bass guitar, lead/rhythm guitar, trumpets, trombones, and sax). This is a fun way to play contemporary music in a small group, similar to a rock band atmosphere. More information will be distributed later. We have 2 voice teachers offering private lessons at FHS. If your son or daughter is not currently taking lessons, you can contact the teachers directly by . Their information and biographies are on the choir website. The choir picnic will be on Saturday, September 19 from 12 2p.m. in the Fremd cafeteria. All choir students are invited and encouraged to attend! 9 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 9 Band Tux Fittings The young men in our Symphonic Band, Symphonic Winds, Wind Ensemble, and Wind Symphony will soon be fit with their performance tuxes. For band, the tuxes are pants and jackets. Please be sure that your son has the other pieces required to complete his attire. A white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, black socks, and black dress shoes are needed. Tuxedo shirts can be purchased at many stores such as Michael s, Hobby Lobby or a tuxedo store, and should include the black bow tie. Many volunteers are needed and work hard to get the best fit possible for all of our musicians. On occasion, a tux might need a slight alteration, such as re hemming the pants. If that is the case for your son s tux, please do NOT cut any fabric during alterations. Just fold and hem as needed or take to a tailor to professionally hem. Staples, glue, duct tape, etc. are not acceptable and students will be charged if a tux is damaged. Parents/Guardians, there is a $6.00 fee for the end of year tuxedo cleaning. This fee is already included in the $17 charge with the new band book. We have been working with Tom s Cleaners in Rolling Meadows who have generously agreed to discount our cleaning fees, which we pass along to you. Should the tux need to be cleaned before the end of the year, Tom s will extend the discount. You do not need to clean the tuxedo after the final concert! Tuxes are to be brought home by students September 23 25, Should you want to pick up the tuxedo for your student, tuxes will be on a rack in the music hall for checkout. When the tux comes home, please read it s attached letter to see if you need to have any alterations made BEFORE the concert. Please remember that assigned school tuxedos are only to be worn for D211 Band or Orchestra events. See you at the concerts! FMA Boys Band Tux Committees Nancy Groch: nancy.groch@att.net or Chris Popovich: chrispop787@gmail.com TRIVIA NIGHT Volunteers Needed! Friday, September 25 6:30pm Sign up here to help! (Please note that volunteer shifts run for the duration of the event, so volunteers will not be able to play on a trivia team. Perfect for those who would rather watch than play!)

10 FMA Page 10 Fundraising Made Simple!...Manna We have an exciting fundraising program to share with Fremd Music students. It's called the Manna Group Scrip Program. The scrip program will allow us to fund raise while we shop. Several local and national retailers participate in the manna program including Jewel, Mariano's, Best Buy, Speedway, Starbucks and Target to name a few. These funds will be able to go toward your student s FMA account! Then that money can be used toward a future band or choir trip. Many choir families have already been participating in Manna and earning money toward the upcoming Disney trip. The Fremd Band program recently announced their winter break proposed trip to Tampa (Outback Bowl) and Orlando (Disney World). The trip is pending approval from the school and district, however students at every level can start accumulating money toward that trip as well! How do these vendors help us raise money? It's simple...the vendors agree to sell their gift cards to us at a discount. Families buy these gift cards at full face value and our organization keeps the balance as profit. Gift cards can be used for everyday shopping too not just Christmas, holidays and special occasions. Use your gift cards for groceries, gas, clothing, restaurants and household items. For example, if you buy a $100 Jewel card, you pay $100 and $4 (4%) goes into your student s FMA account. Different companies have different percentages of profit for the student. Everything is done through the manna website. However, families need to be registered with their own individual accounts so they can start earning money soon. Please the following information to s.lech@comcast.net: Last name Address Phone Number (in case I need to contact you regarding an order) address Child s music class: (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Winds, Wind Ensemble) Orders will be placed online weekly. If your order is entered by 9 p.m. on Sundays it will be included in that week's orders. Manna pick up days and times will be announced soon, depending on when choir and band activities are held at Fremd. Please contact Sue Lech with any questions at s.lech@comcast.net or by text or phone at
