Welcome to the Carl Sandburg High School Bands ! Welcome to the band program at Carl Sandburg High School. We are very excited to see all of our returning students and all of our new students in band! This handbook is designed to help all of you with the day-to-day procedures and yearly outline of what is needed to be successful in the Sandburg Band Program. Please take the time to carefully read through the handbook, as there is a great deal of important information included. Please note that the directors will follow and enforce all elements of this handbook throughout the school year. We look forward to getting to know all of you, so don t hesitate to come in and talk to us. It s going to be a great year! Stewart Bailey Brian Hillhouse Director of Bands sbailey@d230.org (708) Associate Band Director bhillhouse@d230.org C.S.H.S. Band Descriptions Band Office Phone Number: Concert Band: This band represents introductory high school level wind and brass instruction for students in grades Instruction focuses on tone production, technical ability, rhythmical ability, and overall musicianship. Students in this band will combine with Percussion Band for full concert music performances. Combined rehearsals for performances will begin three to four weeks prior to the performance. These rehearsals will take place after school. Many opportunities exist for students to learn new instruments to help instrumentation needs in the full band. Members in this band perform in four full band concerts and solo and ensemble festival. Symphonic Band: This band represents intermediate level band instruction for high school wind and brass players in grades In Symphonic Band II, students build upon their knowledge of tone production, phrasing, technical ability, rhythm, and musicianship that was started in Concert Band. We build upon this knowledge with more advanced tone and scale studies, more advanced rhythmic studies, as well as full band repertoire and chamber music with increased musicianship demands. Students in Symphonic Band perform in four full band concerts, chamber music performances, and several band festivals including solo and ensemble festival. Combined rehearsals with the percussion section will take place after school beginning three to four weeks before a performance. Two or three evening dress rehearsals will take place during the school year to prepare the band for concert and contest performances as well.

Wind Symphony: This band represents advanced instruction for high school wind and brass players in grades In Wind Symphony, students build upon their knowledge of tone production, phrasing, technical ability, rhythm and musicianship from Symphonic Band. Advanced high school and college level music is studied for performance in full band and chamber music settings. Students in Wind Symphony perform on four full band concerts each year, chamber music performances, and several area band festivals including solo and ensemble festival. Weekly evening rehearsals for Wind Symphony: Woodwind and brass players will combine with the percussion section for regular evening rehearsals beginning with every other Monday evening in September and progressing to one evening a week in October through early May. These rehearsals are needed to allow the students adequate preparation time for the music to be learned correctly. These rehearsals will take the place of combined after-school sectionals and rehearsals (with the exception of dress rehearsals). Please refer to the attached calendar for exact dates and times. Students will be allowed two (2) unexcused absences for the year to be used at their own discretion with the exception of within two weeks of a performance. Percussion Band (Percussion Band II): This class was formed to give percussionists much more instructional time and material than what is typically available in most concert band music. This class focuses on entry to intermediate level percussion methods for high school students. Studies will be focusing on proper technique and performance ability for all keyboard percussion, snare drum, timpani, multi-percussion, drum set, world percussion, accessories, marching percussion, and percussion ensemble. In addition to performing as a percussion ensemble, students will also perform on several concerts as the percussion section for the Concert Band, as well as performing in solo and ensemble festival. When preparing for a Concert Band performance, students in Percussion Band II will have several combined rehearsals with the wind and brass players from the Concert Band before each performance in order to have the music properly prepared. Advanced Percussion Band (Percussion Band I): This class represents intermediate to advanced percussion instruction on snare drum, keyboard percussion, timpani, multi-percussion, drum set, accessories, marching percussion, and percussion ensemble. Students in this band will also function as the percussion sections for Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony. Auditions will be held in late August or early September for these bands. Students in Advanced Percussion will have several combined rehearsals with the wind and brass players from the Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony before each performance in order to have the music properly prepared. Percussionists assigned to Wind Symphony will have regular evening rehearsals with the woodwinds and brass beginning with every other Monday night in September and progressing to once a week night rehearsals from October through early May. These rehearsals are needed to give students adequate rehearsal time to learn the music correctly. Please refer to the band calendar for exact dates and times.

Grading Policies for C.S.H.S. Bands Pursuant to school board policy, grades will be computed on an 18-week basis to reflect cumulative progress that will yield 90% of the semester grade; the semester final exam is worth 10% of the semester grade. The grading scale: A+ = % A = A- = 90-91% B+ = 88-89% B = 82-87% B- = 80-81% C+ = 78-79% C = 72-77% C- = 70-71% D+ = 68-69% D = 62-67% D- = 60-61% F = 59% OR BELOW 90% of the Semester Grades are determined by these elements: 40% Playing Tests (under the category of Tests on Skyward). These may be submitted online with Google Classromm, performed live in class, or live one on one with an instructor. These tests are used to assess progress on music studied in class, and to help insure that students are practicing. Practicing is the main homework for these curricular classes. Here is an example of playing test scoring: CRITERIA POSSIBLE POINTS Tone (Perc. Technique) 20 Notes 20 Rhythm 20 Tempo 20 STYLE (dynamics, articulation, phrasing) 20 TOTAL 100

20% Homework (under the same category on Skyward): Homework will consist of Concert Reviews, equipment checks, music check-ins, and short reflective writing assignments. Concert Reviews: Concert Band, Percussion Band and Symphonic Band: Two each semester, typewritten, 1 page in length, double line-spaced, 12 point font, and one-inch margins. Students attend fine art concerts that are limited to: concert band, chamber music, choir, orchestra, jazz ensemble, small group jazz, vocal jazz, Broadway type musicals, and marching band contest/festivals. College, professional, or NFL football game performances of marching bands are not acceptable for concert reviews, Students are strongly encouraged to attend high school, college, or professional level performances. Only one junior high performance can be used each school year. Performances with groups younger than seventh grade will not be allowed for any concert review. Wind Symphony (including percussion section): One each semester, typewritten, 3 pages in length, double line-spaced, 12 point font, and one-inch margins. Students attend fine art concerts that are limited to concert band, chamber music, choir, orchestra, jazz ensemble, small group jazz, vocal jazz, Broadway type musicals, and marching band contest/festivals. College, professional, or NFL football game performances of marching bands are not acceptable for concert reviews, Students are required to attend high school, college, or professional level performances. Performances with groups younger than high school level will not be allowed for any concert review. Please note: All concert reviews must be submitted online through Google Classroom (with editing permissions for annotation) no more than two weeks after the concert date. In addition, students are required to turn-in as part of their grade a program signed by the conductor or their ticket if the student attended a professional concert such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra or a professional musical such as Hamilton or Wicked. Students grades will lowered two full letter grades if a signed program or ticket is not turned in to a director. Student s grades will be reduced for every day the concert review is late after two weeks. Equipment & Music Checks: Students will have periodic checks for items such as: (Please refer to the back section of the handbook that lists specific instrumental needs.) Having instruments in class in proper playing condition

Having necessary accessories, such as reeds, mutes, reed cases, valve oil, etc. Each student with his or her own music on their music stand Each student having a pencil on their music stand Putting instrument away after rehearsal Keeping Instrument locker clean Consequences for loss of points: Students will lose points for failure to not follow any of the above guidelines. Frequent problems can result in phone calls home from the directors, demotion of part or chair assignments, parent/ teacher/ student meeting at school, and lowered semester grades. 15% Rehearsal Etiquette (under the category of Participation on Skyward): After school rehearsals are required for optimal preparation for our performances. Students are expected to come to rehearsals prepared and on time. Disruptive, rude, and negative behavior during these rehearsals will not be tolerated. Students who excessively display poor behavior may be dismissed from rehearsal with a phone call home and a lowered grade. These rehearsals are mandatory and will affect student progress and grades. Please refer to the attached rehearsal schedule and to the attendance policy. 25% Performances & Dress Rehearsals (under the category of Performance on Skyward): Students are required to attend all performances and dress rehearsals on time and in the proper attire. Exact points will vary per activity. An unexcused absence from a dress rehearsal will result in the student being suspended from performing in the upcoming performance with attendance still required. A Special Note on Contest and Festival Participation: Included in the performance grade are contest/ festival Performances. Contests are an important element of high school music education as is it an opportunity for the ensemble to be critiqued and evaluated by outstanding educators from outside our school. Please note that if any student is not present at a contest performance for any reason, the entire grade or score for the ensemble may be lowered. Judges do not know or care why someone is missing from a contest performance. They simply know that a part exists that is not being covered. Excused absence reasons do apply as stated below, but please understand that we all are dependent upon each other for success in music, especially in this situation. Students in ALL of our bands will be participating in contest performances at some point this year.

10% of the Semester grade will be the Semester Final Exam: There will be a written portion of the final exam, as well as a performance portion. The first semester final will largely focus on scale studies and performance etudes. Final exam dates are December 19 th, 20 th and 21 st for first semester and May 24 th, 25 th and 29 th for second semester, unless we have snow days. 1. Academic Dishonesty: District 230 s Successful Schools-Successful Students Touchstone ensures students demonstrate character that embodies accountability, responsibility, integrity, ethical citizenship, respectful relationships and positive leadership. Actions involving plagiarism, fabrication, cheating, recycling of previously submitted work, and/ or unauthorized collaboration on tests, quizzes, daily work, or projects will not be tolerated. These actions will result in academic consequences, as well as potential exclusion from various clubs, activities, athletic teams, and/ or local scholarships and other types of recognition. Attendance Policy: Excused Absences: - Illness - Family Emergency (Please note: a family commitment is not considered a family emergency.) - Other Sandburg activity pre-approved by Mr. Bailey or Mr. Hillhouse Excused absences from performances and/ or dress rehearsals are subject to make-up assignments which may include a typed paper, additional playing test, or other assignment determined by the directors. Unexcused Absences Include (but are not limited to): - Homework - Work - No Ride - Other school activity not pre-approved through Mr. Bailey or Mr. Hillhouse Please Note: Mr. Bailey and Mr. Hillhouse have and will continue to work directly with Sandburg teachers, coaches, and sponsors when a student is asked to be in two or more places at one time. If a Sandburg teacher, coach, or sponsor states that they must have, or really need a student to be with them instead of attending their band commitment, Mr. Bailey and Mr. Hillhouse have done and will continue to do everything possible to accommodate the other commitment, including

excusing the student from the band commitment if necessary. The key is communication. If a student has a scheduling conflict with another Sandburg class or activity, please let both the teacher/coach know as soon as possible, and let the band directors know as soon as possible. We will then do our best to resolve the conflict without the student getting caught in the middle or penalized in the other class or activity. Tardies: Being tardy to band class is defined as the following: Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony: In the music hallway, getting your instrument out of the locker by the time the bell rings, and completely set-up, ready to rehearse no more than 2 minutes after the bell has rung. Percussion Band and Advanced Percussion Band: You must be in the band room by the time the start bell sounds. Extra Credit: Students can earn extra credit in band for the following: Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony Woodwind/ Brass Solo Preparation for Contest: Up to 50 Points Extra Concert Review: Up to 15 Points Per Review Full Participation in Symphony Orchestra: Up to 50 Points Per Semester Prepare IMEA Audition: Up to 50 Points Prepare additional chamber music (duet, trio, etc.): Up to 30 points per member Helping with set-ups for festivals such as the Sandburg Concert Band Festival and our Solo and Ensemble Festival. Timeline for Grade Updating: Students and families should expect that band grades will be updated online with Skyward at least once every two weeks. These updates will include playing tests, performances, and other areas listed previously in the handbook. Extra Help and Assistance for Band Assignments: Mr. Bailey and Mr. Hillhouse are available for extra help during advisory, some lunch homerooms, and after-school, provided they are not in a scheduled after-school rehearsal or performance. Students should see a director to set-up extra help times as needed. Respectful Interactions: In the Carl Sandburg High School Bands, students are expected to treat others as they would like to treat themselves. This includes interactions with fellow students, teachers, music parents, and special guests. Students will be subject to disciplinary actions if they cannot follow this rule. Music Department Detentions:

Detentions for band students can be assigned by a director for behavior problems including (but not limited to): Disruptive behavior during a rehearsal on performance Gum Chewing Any food or drink other than water in the music department without director consent Any cell phone or electronic device use during the day, rehearsal, or a performance without teacher approval. Please Note: An unexcused absence from a music detention will result in a dean s office referral. Part Assignments and Placement: Students in all bands will have set part assignments and seating placements. For Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony, seating order will be determined by the first playing test of each concert series.there are four concert series in the school year. These part assignments are necessary to help make sure students are assigned to a part that they can perform correctly. Principal (section leader) positions will be determined by this test as well. Students may be moved to a different part assignment or placement if they cannot or will not learn their assigned music. For Concert Band and Percussion Bands, part assignments will rotate and be assigned by the directors. Challenges (for students in Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony) Students can challenge a student from the seating assignment next in line to move to that part and /or seating assignment if they wish to have the opportunity. Challenges will be blind; which means the director will assign a number to each student involved in the challenge. That number will be called to play the material, and the number with the higher score gets the higher part or seating assignment. The lower score takes the lower part or seating assignment. Directors will not be able to see the challenge, only listen to the challenge. Students may challenge the same student no more than twice per concert series. Students must complete a challenge form and turn it into the directors at least one week before the challenge is to take place. If a student refuses the challenge from the challenger, he or she will automatically forfeit their part or seating assignment and assume the part of the challenger. Challenges will take place either during band class, a specified time during the school day, or after school. Challenges will be allowed up to two weeks before a performance. New this year: Directors will choose all music used for challenges.

Uniforms: Girls: Black concert gown, black or nude hosiery (no bare legs please), black formal dress shoes. Shoes must cover the heel or have a clasp around the heel. Boys: Black Tuxedo, white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, black cummerbund, black socks, black formal dress shoes. Please note: Students will not be allowed to perform if they are missing any part of their uniform. Uniform Fees: These fees are stated on the uniform agreement sheets. These fees should have been mailed to Mrs. Saubert over the summer. Please pay these fees as soon as possible if they have not been paid already. Band t-shirts: Need to be purchased by all students in curricular band. These shirts are used for marching band, basketball band, curricular bands as an alternative uniform and as a sense of pride for being in band. The cost is $15.00 for boys and girls. Please notes: Marching Band students should have already paid for and received this year s band t-shirt. Payment for band t-shirts is due by September 30 th. ALL CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE PAYABLE TO CARL SANDBURG HIGH SCHOOL. ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. ALWAYS INCLUDE STUDENTS NAME AND ID# ON ANY CHECK OR CORRESPONDANCE. Daily Practicing Guidelines: Students in all bands should practice at least 5 days per week for at least 30 minutes. This is your homework for this curricular class. If you practice and you do not feel that you are improving, please see Mr. Bailey or Mr. Hillhouse for extra-help. Private Lessons: In addition to practicing, the quickest and most comprehensive way to get better on your instrument is to have regular private lessons. Private teachers on most instruments will be coming to Sandburg to teach. All students are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. See Mr. Bailey or Mr. Hillhouse for contact information for private teachers when they become available.

Band Lockers: Instrument lockers will be issued to all band students. These lockers are for instruments only! These lockers are not meant to replace your school locker. Students who are issued a locker must keep their instrument in this locker. Per policy, District 230 is not responsible for the safeguarding of instruments not locked in instrument lockers. Locks will be provided on the lockers. Please do not use a different lock than what is given out. If the school lock needs to be replaced, there will be $5.00 replacement fee. Make-Up Work: Students can be assigned make-up work for any excused absence from a performance. Students will have at least one week to complete any assigned make-up assignment. Band Instrument Repair: Unfortunately, there may well be times during the school year when your band instrument needs to be repaired. Please only take your instrument to a qualified repair shop. The local music stores in Orland Park are not the recommended places for high school band instrument repair. Treble Clef Music ( ) as well as Quinlan and Fabish Music ( ) are the closest dependable and time-tested instrument repair shops. The Sandburg Band has used Treble Clef Music for our repairs for over 30 years. School-Owned Instruments: Sandburg High School does own a limited number of tubas, baritone saxophones, tenor saxophones, bass clarinets, euphoniums, French Horns, bassoons, oboes and percussion equipment for student use. These instruments are available for student use with a signed parent and student instrument usage form. Priority will be given to those students who do not own their own instrument. Students will need to provide their own reeds and valve oil for all school-owned instruments. Tri-M Music Honor Society Current students in grades can apply to become members of the Modern Music Masters or Tri-M international music honor society, which is part of the National Association for Music Education. Tri-M membership is attained by meeting a series of music related requirements, and having recommendations from Mr. Hillhouse and Mr. Bailey. The Tri-M induction ceremony is usually held in late first or early second semester. Tri-M students will participate in yearly music department activities to maintain their membership in good standing.

Tri-M Inductee Requirements Students who are interested in Tri-M Honors Society will have a set of requirements to complete before being inducted. Out of the following ten requirements students will need to complete seven (7) to be eligible. All completed requirements must be signed off by the appropriate music faculty upon completion and some will need to be preapproved (explained in parenthesis). Tri-M Requirement Start Date Completed Date Sandburg Music Faculty Signature Audition for ILMEA District Festival Take private lessons for at least 1 semester Achieve section leader/student conductor Participation in a solo at Solo and Ensemble Contest Averaging an A in all current music classes Is currently or has been a student aide for the music dept Extra concert review on a collegiate or professional ensemble/soloist Participating in Community Service at a music event. 13 Co-Curricular Ensembles: In addition to the many outstanding curricular bands at Sandburg, we have a wide selection of co-curricular ensembles as well. Students are strongly urged to become members of our co-curricular ensembles. Marching Eagles: This is the marching band for Carl Sandburg High School. The marching band performs at all home varsity football games, as well as several area parades, contests, and festivals. This band is open to all music students in grades The marching season begins in the summer and runs through the end of the end of the football season in late October or early November. Jazz Ensembles: Open to all music students in grades 9-12 by audition. Each jazz band performs two full jazz concerts here during the year, as well as performing in several area contests and festivals and off campus concerts each year. Auditions are held in late October and the season runs through the end of April. Basketball Pep Band: Open to all music students in grades Auditions are required for students not enrolled in curricular band. This is the pep band that performs for all home boys varsity basketball games and some varsity girls games. The season runs from early December to late February or early March. Symphony Orchestra: While not a co-curricular ensemble, the Symphony Orchestra needs strong wind players, brass players, and percussionists each year to complete instrumentation in order to present a true symphony sound. Open to all music students by audition, the Symphony Orchestra is a year-long activity. Students receive up to 50 extra-credit points to their band grade for participating in Symphony Orchestra each semester. Pit Orchestra: Open to all music students in grades 9-12 by audition. This is the ensemble that provides the live music for the spring musical. Rehearsals start in late January or early February and performances are in late April or early May. Orland Days Parade (if it takes places in 2019) This optional end of the year performance is open to all band students whether or not they participated in fall marching band. This performance is extremely important to the community and is available for up to 9 hours of community service each year.

CSHS Music Boosters: This is the parent organization that bridges the gap between what the school can provide our music students and what they need. Music Booster membership is optional, but strongly encouraged. Among the many items that the boosters help to provide for our students are senior scholarships, summer camp scholarships, achievement awards, uniforms, help with some co-curricular expenses, clinicians, and travel expenses. Meetings are held once month beginning in August. CSHS Music Department Web Site: This is a great way to keep up-to-date within our music department and the Music Boosters as well. Sandburg Bands on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram: Families who have accounts on Facebook and/or Twitter are strongly encouraged to follow us! These websites are used to help provide students and parents with information regarding our upcoming events. It is not a requirement for families to follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook.
