Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement Our focus is twofold: chamber music and outreachthe mission of HCM is to connect, engage and inspire students of all ages through a lifetime of music education and performance.our newest program, String Sprouts is an El Sistema based program. El Sistema USA is a national organization whose mission is to support and grow a nationwide movement of programs inspired by El Sistema to effect social change through music for children with the fewest resources and the greatest need. What began in 2001 as a summer camp to offer local students the opportunity to study and perform chamber music, Heartland Chamber Music has grown into an organization that has inspired students as diverse as physicians, professional symphony musicians and groups of ethnically and racially diverse preschoolers in low socioeconomic neighborhoods throughout our community. Our programming philosophy mirrors that of chamber music; quality over quantity, small student-artist ratio, and engaging performing artists who have a heart for teaching. This ideal gives everyone a chance to connect with artists without limitation of age, skill level or socioeconomic background. Our ultimate goal is to shape the future one note at a time. Background Statement Founded in 2001 as a summer camp to offer local musicians the opportunity to study and perform chamber music, Heartland Chamber Music has grown into one of the most nationally recognized pre-college chamber music programs in the midwest. HCM has created a model that is unique in scope and benefits the musicians we serve while developing an audience base that will help support the future of the arts in Kansas City. The organization has served more than 4500 students and presented more than 173 concerts throughout the past 17 years through year-round and summer chamber music programming. Students ranging from ages 3-76 participate in programs designed to accommodate musicians of all levels. HCM's two-week summer program has grown into a nationally-recognized summer chamber music festival hosting the Harlem Quartet, making Kansas City a popular destination for chamber music each summer. HCM expanded our programming in 2017 and launched String Sprouts. Specifically designed for underserved children ages 3-8, String Sprouts KC is a FREE music education program created to support school readiness.year-round Outreach ProgramsHall Pass Outreach: HCM students perform for underserved pre-k studentsstring Sprouts KC: An Early intervention music education program that is based on the key components of the Suzuki Violin Method and El Sistema. Summer ProgramsHeartland Chamber Music Festival: ages 12-26Festival Scholars: up and coming young artists ages 16-26Heartland Chamber Music Junior Festival: ages 15 and underadult Amateur Workshop: ages 21+ Impact Statement Top Accomplishments 2018:Presented our first annual Sprouts and a Symphony concert in April with the UMKC Conservatory Orchestra with over 400 in attendance. Needs Statement We need to continue to increase our Individual funding base and secure additional funding for our growing String Sprouts programwe need underwriters for our Festival faculty. Each faculty sponsorship is $1500 and goes directly to support our Festival faculty salaries.we need a Founder succession planwe need to recruit additional volunteers to help manage our Sprouting Up Ceremonies 2

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement During these 17 years, our proudest moments are hiring alumni to teach for the Junior Festival and String Sprouts, and having a past Festival Scholar win a position with the KC Symphony. WE are developing our own talent in Kansas City! We have found that:from a formative perspective, music is an integral part of a wellrounded education.from a cultural perspective, chamber music education is one of the purest forms of the performance arts.from a community perspective, there is no more efficient way to deliver an experience of classical arts than through the chamber music experience.our challenge is that patrons of the arts attend concerts, generously support the great concert series, and proudly support the professional symphonies and arts organizations. But where do we think these musicians came from? Someone was there to nurture their talent. If we as a society do not support the organizations that nurture the talent in our own communities, then we are consigning ourselves to be a permanent importer of talent, leadership, and innovation. It is our dream that every donor continues to support the professional performing arts organizations, but additionally supports HCM and the work we are doing to connect, engage and inspire students of all ages through a lifetime of music education and performance. 4 Programs Programs Heartland Chamber Music Festival Description Category Population Served Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Heartland Chamber Music Festival, July 26 - August 4, 2019The Summer Festival is an exciting 9 days of chamber music, orchestra, master classes, student and faculty performances and more! Each summer advanced string and piano students ages are selected by audition to work one-on-one with internationally renown faculty members that have gathered for the festival with the purpose of inspiring and nurturing the students' development. The acclaimed Harlem Quartet join us in the summer as artists in residence. We attract local, national and international students. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Music Festivals US& International, Children Only (5-14 years), Adults Our projected measurable outcomes for 2019 Festival and Junior Festival include using chamber music to develop leadership and communication skills and enhanced musical independence and instrumental technique. Our goal is that 80% of students report an improvement in all 5 areas at the conclusion of their Festival experience. Abe Dewing with the Fusion String Ensemble and Cambridge Symphony Orchestra wrote, "Just as in life, chamber music by its very nature brings out issues such as hierarchy, balances, choices, and sometimes one must encourage a shy personality to speak up or ask another to follow instead of lead. " Heartland Chamber Music Festival and Junior Festival use the study and performance of chamber music to further explore and develop these characteristics in our students. Our projected measurable outcomes for 2019 Festival and Junior Festival include using chamber music to develop leadership and communication skills and enhanced musical independence and instrumental technique. Our annual survey measures our defined outcomes. Faculty and Artistic Directors also evaluate students based on their initial audition and then after their final performance to determine increased musical proficiency. I had spent much of the previous four years studying chamber music with the faculty of Heartland Chamber Music Festival. Through their expertise, I learned the finer aspects of making chamber music intensive listening, score studying, working well with other people and personalities, decisionmaking, phrasing, style, and a wealth of other topics that relate to chamber music and music-making in general. Heartland provided an outlet to experiment with these ideas with other music students interested in musical possibilities, and also supplied the tools and supervision to find success within and eventually outside of that space."philip Marten, Alumni who recently won the First Assistant Concertmaster position with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. 4

Festival Scholars Description Category Festival ScholarsThis is a tuition-free opportunity for 8 highly gifted musicians to receive intense chamber music coaching with festival artists, to perform live on KPR, and be featured in their own scheduled performance during the Festival. This program is attracting an international roster of up-and-coming young artist. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Music Festivals Population Served US& International,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Our projected measurable outcomes for 2019 Festival Scholars include using chamber music to develop leadership and communication skills and enhanced musical independence and instrumental technique. Additionally, outcomes for Festival Scholars includes preparing these young artists for a professional career in music. " The Festival Scholars program uses the study and performance of chamber music to further explore and develop these characteristics in our students. Giving this opportunity to young artists enables them to "live the life" of a professional musician for 9 days and provides them the opportunity to network and develop pre-professional relationships with like-minded peers as the students begin their careers. Faculty evaluations, and input from the Harlem Quartet. Many of our Festival Scholars young artists have gone on to attend prestigious Conservatories and Festivals including Julliard, Interlochen, Aspen Festival, and New England Conservatory. The quality of the HMC festival is superb, matching and surpassing many other renowned chamber music festivals around the country. I am thankful that my love and knowledge of chamber music was planted so early on in my life, as I have seen many of my peers not experience this level of music making until much later in their careers. These roots have been without a doubt a huge influence on me throughout my career as a student. Philip Marten, HCM alumn and current Associate Concertmaster with the Cincinnati Symphony 5

String Sprouts Description Category Sprouts is a groundbreaking, Early Childhood music program for children ages 3-8 with roots in the Suzuki violin method and El Sistema. We bring Sprouts to underserved communities and commit to the students and caregivers for the 5 year curriculum. The curriculum consists of 32 weekly group violin lessons (for 5 years), quarterly performances and evaluations, and a year-end celebration and concert with a symphony. Students receive free of charge:violinweekly violin group lessonsweekly parent/caregiver education sessions Opportunities to performannual concert with a Symphony (UMKC Conservatory - Sprouts Partner) What an incredible opportunity for all concerned... first and foremost for the young children to be on stage with a full symphony orchestra, and secondly for the students of the Conservatory, providing precisely the kind of educational experience they will be doing the rest of their lives! Robert Olson, UMKC Conservatory Orchestra Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Music Instruction Population Served Children and Youth (0-19 years),, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Our projected measurable outcomes include an increase in technical and fine motor skills required to play a string instrument and an increase in student vocabularies and resiliency which all support school readiness. Children learn technical and fine motor skills during the weekly violin lessons over a nine-month period. Learning right and left-hand accuracy of their bow hold and finger positioning and the students' skills in using a correct playing position develops these skills. The vocabulary used in Sprout's violin instruction is rich and detailed which will positively influence students' vocabulary. Resiliency is being able to bounce back from stress, challenge, tragedy, trauma or adversity. Building a sense of mastery, and increasing the number of people who care about them helps build resiliency. Weekly lessons in a supportive community of site administrators, caregivers, Sprouts teachers, and assistants help build resiliency. Over 25,000 children under the age of 5 are living in poverty in Kansas City. Studies show that children in poverty begin kindergarten a year or more behind their more well-off peers. According to findings recently published by Psychology Today, early study of music benefits brain architecture for a person's entire life. The scientists theorize that, because playing an instrument requires so many parts of the brain to be active at once, the connections formed actually stimulate brain growth, especially between hemispheres.sprouts uses music education as a vehicle to support school readiness to help bridge the academic gap. Evaluations will be given by Fully-Certified Lead Teachers at each site and be conducted quarterly for quantitative analysis. The Evaluation Form created by OCM will measure left and right-hand techniques to evaluate Fine Motor Skills and technical violin skills. A Qualitative Analysis to report Resiliency impact includes teacher and caregiver surveys in addition to Documentary interviews. The Peabody test will be given by the Research team at OCM to analyze Sprouts impact on Student's vocabulary. 6

Examples of Program Success In Year I, 86% of Sprout students were executing at least one of the six skills we tested well by the end of year one.97% of participating parents/caregivers reported an improved relationship with their child. Comments include: I feel like it brings us closer. It gives us something in common "Thank you for your patience and all of your tips for teaching. They will carry over into other areas as well We are learning more about each other and our boundaries through Sprouts classes and practices When asked to identify a major step forward in their child's development, the following was reported: She is learning so much about being responsible! My children have been focused and more resilient My Child works much better in a group setting More patience. Interested in learning Hall Pass Concerts Description Category Hall Pass OUTREACH Concerts We share our passion by taking chamber music OUT of the concert halls and into the community. Our student ensembles design each program perform and interact with the audience, We serve a diverse audience for students, ages 3-8 at El Centro, The Children's Place, TLC, Educare, Mosaic and The Guadalupe Center. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Musical Performances Population Served Poor,Economically Disadvantaged,Indigent,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Our goal is to serve 350 underprivileged Early Ed students through concerts performed by HCM students mentors. Many communities and families living in poverty typically lack access to quality music education programs and classical concerts. Hall Pass addresses these concerns by taking the concerts into the communities. Data gathered by the Program Manager. It's been said that music is the universal language. Generally we think that means between languages and cultures but it is no different for special needs kids. When Genevieve Frank from Heartland Chamber Music visited Children's TLC and my classroom this summer, I didn't know what to expect. Children with autism have difficulty attending, interacting socially, or even sitting in circle or story time. But classical music has a unique ability to evoke emotion and to form a connection between the music and the audience. When the story was told through the violin accompanied with Genevieve's voice, the children were captivated and attentive for the entire 30 minutes. Genevieve was professional and well prepared and the kids loved her. We look forward to future performances by Heartland Chamber Music. Mel Montague, teacher Children's TLC 7

Heartland Chamber Music ADULT Workshop Description Heartland Adult Amateur Chamber Music Workshop, July 18-21, The Heartland Adult Chamber Music Workshop provides an exciting opportunity for adult amateur musicians to explore great works of chamber music. The four-day workshop feature faculty from the Heartland Chamber Music Festival including musicians from the Kansas City Symphony. The faculty musicians will coach and play alongside participants, creating a unique and encouraging music-making environment. Category Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Music Festivals Population Served Adults,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Our projected measurable outcomes for the 2018 Adult Workshop include using chamber music to make connections with other like-minded adults who share the same passion and for participants to be inspired by performing with professional musicians during the Workshop. Amateur music-making offers an avenue to the types of social bonds and friendships that have declined as life has sped up, a problem addressed by Robert D. Putnam in his recent book ''Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community'' (Simon & Schuster). Mr. Putnam, a Harvard University political scientist, argues that civic engagement and private networks have declined over the past 30 years, to America's detriment. The Adult Workshop devoted to amateur musicians ages 21+ provides opportunities to address these concerns. Program Success Monitored By Our annual survey measures our defined outcomes. Examples of Program Success 100% of 2018 participants learned new chamber music skills and felt more connected to their group after the workshop.participants reported: This is one of the highlights of my entire year! Everything was perfect! I appreciate the opportunity you gave us 8
