2 OUR THANKS... Chapman University would like to thank Mark and Janet Hilbert for their generosity in establishing The Hilbert Museum of California Art. Their passion and dedication for art has led them to share their collection of the California Scene painting movement of the 1920s through the 1970s and beyond with our community and all who have a deep appreciation of California Art. The Hilbert collection is comprised of oils, watercolors, sketches, and lithographs of rural and urban scenes, coastal views, farms, ranches, freeways and landscapes of everyday life in the Golden State. The Museum opened to the public in February, 2016 and is now open Tuesday Sunday, excluding holidays, from 11am to 5pm. Admission is free. INTERPLAY Welcome to today s program, part of this year s INTERPLAY Festival of music, culture and ideas, a collaborative venture of Chapman University and Pacific Symphony. With many events free and open to the public, the festival offers audiences a fascinating in-depth look at a particular facet of our culture that will entertain, enlighten, illuminate and inspire. We look forward to seeing you on the Chapman campus and at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

6 ABOUT THE ARTISTS Joseph Morris is the Principal Clarinet of the Pacific Symphony where he holds the Hanson Family Foundation Chair. As the first prize winner of the 42nd Ima Hogg Competition he is the recipient of the 2017 Grace Woodson Memorial Award and has appeared as soloist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Burbank Philharmonic, and Downey Symphony Orchestra as well as a performance of John Adams Gnarly Buttons conducted by the composer with the Colburn Orchestra. Mr. Morris has appeared as Guest Principal Clarinet with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Grant Park Music Festival and at the Colorado Music Festival. He has previously held Principal Clarinet positions with the Sarasota Opera Orchestra and the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Morris received a Professional Studies Certificate from The Colburn Conservatory of Music in He graduated from the USC Thornton School of Music in May Benjamin Smolen was appointed principal flutist of Pacific Symphony in September 2011, where he occupies the Valerie and Hans Imhof Chair. He has won top prizes at the Haynes International Flute Competition, James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition, National Flute Association Young Artist Competition and New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition. He has given solo performances in Russia, Japan, Belgium, France and as concerto soloist with Pacific Symphony, Princeton University Orchestra, Charlotte Civic and Youth Orchestras, and Gardner Webb Symphony Orchestra. Smolen s performances have been featured on NPR, WGBH-Boston, WDAV-Charlotte, French National Radio, and the Naxos and Mode record labels. He can also be heard on the numerous soundtracks for movies including Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Smolen studied at Princeton University, the Moscow Conservatory, the New England Conservatory and the University of Michigan. He is a William S. Haynes Artist and performs on a handmade, customcrafted Haynes 14-karat gold flute.

7 ABOUT THE ARTISTS A native of southern California, Ted Sugata is currently second oboist with Pacific Symphony and Professor at Chapman University. Previously, he was a member of the Sarasota Orchestra in Florida, and principal oboist with the Lyrique-en-Mer Opera Festival in Belle-Ile, France. He performs regularly with the Los Angeles Opera, San Diego Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, and the Pasadena Symphony. Since 2012, he has been a member of the Calico Winds, a resident woodwind ensemble with the Glendale Noon Concerts. In 2000, he received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and his Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music in Dr. Sugata recently completed a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in oboe performance at USC in In addition to Chapman, he is also on faculty at Pepperdine University, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Long Beach College and the Colburn School of Performing Arts. Rose Corrigan is principal bassoonist of Pacific Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Pasadena Symphony, and a former member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra. Corrigan is a graduate of the University of Southern California. She returned to the university as an adjunct professor, teaching bassoon from 1993 until Corrigan has played bassoon and contrabassoon on the soundtracks of over 500 motion pictures, working with composers such as Michael Giacchino, Patrick Doyle, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, John Powell, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, James Horner, Michel Legrand, Michael Kamen and William Ross. She has also performed on hundreds of records for stars like Paul McCartney, Tony Williams, Barbra Streisand and Natalie Cole. Rose lives in Sierra Madre with her trombonist-composer husband Steven Williams and their three children.
