2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement The Kansas City Chamber Orchestra is dedicated to the enrichment of our community through the appreciation and performance of fine classical music in Kansas City and throughout the region. Background Statement Maestro Bruce Sorrell founded the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra in Under Sorrell's direction during the past 30 seasons the Chamber Orchestra has garnered considerable critical acclaim and is attracting a growing and enthusiastic audience. The Kansas City Chamber Orchestra consists of 15 to 30 musicians depending on the music to be performed. The term chamber orchestra is used to define the size of orchestra which was available to such composers as Bach, Mozart, Handel, Vivaldi, Haydn and Beethoven. Many 20th and 21st century composers have also written music specifically for chamber orchestra. Performances are held throughout the greater Kansas City metropolitan area in venues such as Yardley Hall - Johnson County Community College, at the Folly Theater - downtown Kansas City Missouri, White Recital Hall - UMKC campus, and at numerous church venues across the area. Throughout the past 30 seasons the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra has utilized professional orchestral musicians who are committed to the high standards of the Chamber Orchestra. These musicians live in the Kansas City area and add to the vibrant cultural life of our community. The Kansas City Chamber Orchestra has received critical acclaim for their concerts, especially those featuring music from the baroque and classical eras. The Baroque by Candlelight series is a favorite with audiences who attend performances of exceptional baroque music in an elegant candle-lit church. The KCCO has successfully performed many contemporary works such as the Britten cturne, written in the 1950's. In 2004 the KCCO commissioned Steven Gutheinz to compose a new work in honor of the Lewis and Clarke expedition. In recent years the KCCO has premiered two works by Forest Pierce, and one by Jean Belmont Ford. Other works by Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Stravinsky, Weill and other modern composers have been featured at concerts. Collaborations with other performing arts organizations are an important element of the KCCO's history; recent seasons have included a major collaboration with the International Center for Music Park University, Friends of Chamber Music and the introduction of a new organ at Hope Lutheran Church. Past partners have included Paul Mesner Puppets, Owen/Cox Dance, Village Presbyterian Church choir, UMKC's Conservatory of Music, the Civic Opera, and the Kansas City Chorale. Impact Statement The Kansas City Chamber Orchestra is able to select this area's finest musicians to produce 5 or more concerts each year for general audiences. An Education Outreach Program is developed for each the KCCO's concerts. Students are introduced to classical music through a 4-week classroom instruction period followed by attendance at a live concert. For many students, these concerts are their first introductions to live classical music. Most of the musicians and soloists that are employed by the Chamber Orchestra reside in the metro area. Many are currently members of the Kansas City Symphony or they hold faculty positions with area universities, others are free-lance professionals. The KCCO assists in attracting and retaining superior musicians and soloists with national and international reputation to this region as a result of increasing the employment opportunities the metro area. As the KCCO celebrates our 30th Anniversary concert season in , we have established the following goals. Increase the number of season ticket and single ticket buyers. Increase individual support. Increase funding from foundations and corporations Increase low cost marketing of ticket sales. Increase the number of students served through the Education Outreach Program. Needs Statement General Operations funding.educational Outreach Program funding = $15,000 will produce 4 EOP programs that will serve 2,000 to 3,000 studentsspecial project funding i.e commissioned works by contemporary composers $10,000 - $20,000 or concert underwriting $20,000- $30,000.Staff funding, the KCCO needs a 3/4 time staff person to assist with office and database management, donor relations, and special event tasks. This would allow the current part-time staff members to focus on management, fundraising and marketing tasks.new board members and board development. 2

3 CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement I believe that an active arts community makes a city stronger and more diverse. Our concert series is the heart of what we provide to our community. The Kansas City Chamber Orchestra provides high quality programming for Kansas City's audiences and opportunities for local and area professional musicians to perform for those audiences. The Education Outreach Program is offered free to area schools and thousands of students each season. The educational portion of our mission allows the Orchestra to reach out to area school children and to provide them with an introduction to classical music. The KCCO has partnered in the past with the Civic Opera, the Paul Mesner Puppets, UMKC Conservatory and the KC Chorale and Friends of Chamber Music to present unique programs that showcase both organizations. We are always seeking additional partnerships and collaborations to create new opportunities to work together to produce wonderful programming that is new and fresh. The Kansas City Chamber Orchestra is a small performing arts organization that endeavors to end each year with a balanced budget. Fundraising is always a challenge. We enjoy a loyal support base of individuals, corporations and foundations. In the past few years the KCCO has greatly increased the support from individuals as well as various government organizations. Our organization took a major step forward with the addition of a Director of Administration and Development a few years ago. An additional advantage to having added this position is that our Music Director is now able to concentrate on his talents for creating vibrant programs and musical events. In addition to this new staff member, we continue to enjoy our association with both interns and volunteers as they greatly add to our ability to run our organization. Our Music Director, Bruce Sorrell, has an amazing ability to speak about music to any audience, making this topic both comfortable and interesting. We are moving toward the goal of a community-based board that reflects the diversity of the metro area. We are actively seeking and recruiting additional members to accomplish this. Our board will soon revisit and revise our Strategic Plan. Two of the goals set forth in the current plan have been met with the addition of our new staff member and the ability to increase the educational component of our organization. Service Categories Music Areas of Service Areas Served Areas MO - Jackson County MO - Jackson County Urban Core MO - Eastern Jackson Co MO - Clay County MO - Platte County KS - Johnson County KS - Wyandotte County KS - Wyandotte County Urban Core Audience members for the concert series reside throughout the greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. We currently have season ticket holders from as far away as Wichita, Topeka, Columbia and Springfield. Seven % of our mailing list are individuals who live outside of Kansas and Missouri and who also attend concerts when they are able. 3

CEO Comments The Kansas City Chamber Orchestra has recently launched our 3st concert season on October 5, 2017, it will run through June 30, The KCCO would like to be able to schedule all their concerts in the larger professional venues such as the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and the Folly Theater. However, the KCCO, in an effort to balance the organization's budget, must use smaller church or other local venues for the majority of their concerts. The smaller venues do not attract the larger numbers of audience members that the more well known professional venues do. It would be to the KCCO's advantage to be able to schedule more concerts in the Kauffman and Folly venues.during the 31st season the KCCO has partnered with 2 organizations to produce two special concerts. The December 5, 2017 concert will take place in Old Mission United Methodist Church and will feature the "Musica Vocale Ensemble" to produce "Saint Nicolas by Benjamin Britten. The KCCO's founding concertmaster, violinist Ben Sayevich will work with the KCCO to produce a concert on April 27, 2018 with soloists from the International Center for Music at Park University. These two partnerships that begin the season are great examples of the KCCO's desire to partner with other performing arts organizations that create opportunities for both groups to benefit from the increased exposure and the opportunity to create new works that challenge and inspire the artists and the audience. 5
