2 Shoals Area Band Directors Association By-Laws ARTICLE 1. NAME This organization shall be known as the Shoals Area Band Directors Association ARTICLE II. OBJECTIVES Section 1. Section 2. Section 3. Section 4. To foster a spirit of friendliness, fellowship, and cooperation among band directors of Colbert and Lauderdale counties (Shoals Area). To arouse and maintain an enthusiastic interest in the various band programs (both individual and collective) in the Shoals Area. To develop a program of events that will be of musical and educational value to the band directors and their students. To provide a common meeting ground for an exchange of ideas and methods that will stimulate growth among the band directors and advance musical standards and achievements in the bands of the Shoals Area. ARTICLE III. MEMBERSHIP Section 1. Membership in the Shoals Area Band Directors Association shall be active and honorary. Section 2. Active membership shall consist of all active band directors of grades 7-12 in Colbert and Lauderdale counties. Section 3. Honorary membership shall be open to those chosen by the Association for outstanding service to bands of the Shoals Area. Honorary members may attend all meetings and functions and may take part in all discussions but may not hold office or vote.
3 ARTICLE IV. OFFICERS Section 1. Section 2. Section 3. The officers of the Shoals Area Band Directors Association shall be: Chairman, Vice-Chairman (Chairman-Elect), and Secretary/Treasurer. Officers shall be elected at the annual meeting of the Association to be held during the Shoals Area Honor Band Festival. The term of office for the Chairman and Vice-Chairman (Chairman-Elect) shall be one year. The Secretary/Treasurer shall be two years. In the event any officer shall be unable to complete his/her term of office, the Board of Directors shall appoint a replacement to complete this term. ARTICLE V. DUTIES OF OFFICERS Section 1. Section 2. Section 3. The Chairman shall preside at all meetings of the Association and the Board of Directors. The Chairman shall appoint all committees and/or individuals to carry out the various activities of the Association. The Chairman shall set meeting dates and times as directed in this document and shall notify all members of such meetings. The Chairman shall set dates, location, and times of all activities of the Association. The Vice-Chairman (Chairman-Elect) shall coordinate the selection of all audition materials as needed for activities directed in this document and see that all active members receive such at the appropriate time. The Vice-Chairman shall be responsible for pre-registration of the Shoals Honor Band, including collection and organization of forms and fees. The Vice-Chairman (Chairman-Elect) shall assume the duties of the Chairman in case of absence or disability of the Chairman. The Secretary/Treasurer shall keep a record of all meetings of the Association and Board of Directors and attend to any correspondence as needed. The Secretary/Treasurer shall keep an accurate record of all receipts and disbursements, showing each activity separately, as well as a complete record of all funds. ARTICLE VI. BOARD OF DIRECTORS Section 1. Section 2. There shall be a Board of Directors consisting of the Chairman, Vice- Chairman (Chairman-Elect), Secretary/Treasurer, and Past Chairman. The Board of Directors shall meet as needed to supervise the general affairs of the Association, continually keeping in mind the true democratic principle of presenting to the members all business directly affecting the membership and the welfare of the Association.
4 ARTICLE VII. MEETINGS Section 1. There shall be two regular meetings of the Shoals Area Band Directors Association. a. The fall meeting shall be scheduled for the last Monday in August. b. The Annual Meeting to be held in conjunction with Shoals Area Honor Band Festival. Section 2. Section 3. Special meetings may be called by the Chairman Active members present shall constitute a quorum. ARTICLE VIII. SHOALS AREA HONOR BAND Section 1. Statement of Purpose The purpose of the Shoals Area Honor Band is to allow students in the band programs in Colbert and Lauderdale Counties an opportunity to participate in an Honor Band setting. The Shoals Area Honor Band shall consist of Junior and Senior High Divisions.
5 Section 2. Instrumentation a. Instrumentation of the Shoals Area Honor Bands shall consist of the following: Wind Ensemble Concert Band Junior High Piccolo Students with minimum score of 70 may request. To be selected as needed Flute Oboe Bassoon Clarinet Alto Clarinet Bass Clarinet Contra-Bass Clarinet Alto Saxophone Tenor Saxophone Baritone Saxophone French Horn Trumpet Baritone Trombone Tuba Percussion Timpani Mallet TOTALS b. In the event there are not enough participants to fill all needed positions of the Honor Bands: 1. Additional Auditions may be held. 2. The number of Bands may be reduced. 3. Instrumentation may be modified as necessary. 4. Jr./Sr. High Timpani and Mallet positions may be filled by the next percussion auditionees in the event that they are not filled
6 Section 3. Selection Procedures I. Shoals Area Junior High Honor Band a. Shall consist of students in 7 th and 8 th grades or lower. b. No student may tryout on more than one instrument. c. Only the Judge and student shall be in the tryout room. d. All ties shall be broken by the judge using the following order: For Winds, Mallets, and Snare Reverse on the score sheet, SR, Tone, etc. For Tympani Prepared Exercise then Tuning. e. Shall be placed by audition consisting of: Winds and Mallet: Three (3) major scales and arpeggios- (C, F, G- one octave)(memorized and played in 8 th note feel) B-flat concert chromatic scale (one octave) (memorized and played in 8 th note feel) Percussion: Snare Drum: Orchestral Roll Long Roll 5 Stroke Roll Paradiddle All Rudiments to be played open-closedopen. (memorized) Tympani: Tuning Major 3 rd, Perfect 4 th, Perfect 5 th, Major 6 th Winds and Mallet: Prepared study to be selected from the Rubank Intermediate Method. Percussion: Snare Drum: Prepared study to be selected from the Rubank Intermediate Method Tympani: Prepared study to be the Junior High All-State Selection Winds, Mallets, and Percussion-Snare: Sight-Reading Tympani: No Sight Reading
7 II. Shoals Area Senior High Honor Band a. Shall consist of students in grades 9-12 Students in grades 7 and 8 may audition for either the Junior High or the Senior High Band but no student may audition for both b. No student may tryout on more than one instrument. c. Ties shall be broken by the judge using the following order: For Winds, Mallets, and Snare - Reverse on the score sheet SR, Tone, etc. For Tympani Prepared Exercise then Tuning. d. Shall be placed by audition consisting of: Winds and Mallet: Five (5) major scales and arpeggios (C, F, G, Bb, and D) one octave with the exception of the flutes, clarinets, and mallets which will be two octaves. (memorized and and played in 8 th note feel) Chromatic Scale- Same as Jr. High All-State Percussion: Snare: Orchestral Roll Long Roll Flam Accents Flam Paradiddle All Rudiments to be played open-closedopen. (memorized) Tympani: Tuning Major 3 rd, Perfect 4 th, Perfect 5 th Major 6 th Winds and Mallets, and Snare: Prepared study shall be first exercise from the Junior High All- State Audition exercises Tympani: Prepared study to be the Senior High All-State Selection Winds, Mallets, and Snares: Sight-reading Tympani: No Sight-Reading IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH DIRECTOR TO SEE THAT HIS/HER STUDENT IS GIVEN THE CORRECT AUDITION MATERIAL!
8 III. Each director participating shall be guaranteed one (1) participant per division (1 Junior High and 1 Senior High) provided that he/she has had students in each division. These students MUST have participated in these auditions! DIRECTOR MUST BE AVAILABLE TO JUDGE AUDITIONS IN ORDER FOR HIS/HER STUDENTS TO TRYOUT. EXCEPTIONS MAY BE GRANTED BY THE CHAIRMAN. DIRECTOR MUST BE PRESENT AT ALL REHEARSALS IN ORDER FOR HIS/HER STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE UNLESS EXCUSED BY THE CHAIRMAN IN ADVANCE! Section 4. Drop-Out Replacement If someone withdraws before rehearsals begin and it adversely affects the balance, the Chairman has the right to replace the drop-out with the students having the next highest score from the auditions. Section 5. Rehearsal Sessions Attendance is required at ALL rehearsal sessions! (Any absence not excused by the Board of Directors will result in dismissal from the Honor Band.) There should be no absences; However, under extreme or extenuating circumstances an appeal may be made to the Board of Directors by the student s band director, at least two weeks prior to the festival or the published deadline. The chair shall call a meeting of the Board of Directors to consider appeals-a secret vote shall be taken to determine the result. The Chair shall vote only in absence of another member of the Board of Directors. ARTICLE IX. PRE-MPA CONCERT FESTIVAL The Shoals Area Band Directors Association may sponsor a pre-mpa festival for those bands interested in receiving comments before the Alabama Bandmasters MPA Festival. The date, times, and place shall be determined by the Chairman.
9 ARTICLE X. FEE SCHEDULE Section 1. A. Shoals Area Honor Band 1. Students must be pre-registered with all fees. a. School Fee $50.00 per director b. Audition Fee.$4.00 per student 2. The Vice-Chairman must receive registration by the deadline date. 3. Fees are non-refundable! Section 2. Pre-District Festival No fees shall be charged. Section 3. ALL FEES MUST BE PAID PRIOR TO PATICIPATION IN EACH EVENT! Section 1. The Awards Committee ARTICLE XI. STANDING COMMITTEES ARTICLE XII. AMENDMENTS The By-Laws of this Association may be amended at any regular meeting of the Association by a two-thirds vote of the active members present and voting.

It is hoped these suggestions will be of help to each Chairman.
