1 Instructor: Andrew Pau Fall 2006 Office: Music Building 207 Office Hours: T/Th, time TBA Music 001 Introduction to Music Section CT3RA: T/Th 12:15-1:30 pm Section 1T3RA: T/Th 1:40-2:55 pm Course Description. This course is an introduction to the elements of music and a survey of representative masterpieces of Western art music from about 1600 to the present. The goal of the course is to develop an understanding of the basic elements of music and the formal and stylistic characteristics of music of different historical periods. In the process, students may expect to develop active listening skills that enrich and deepen their appreciation of music. No previous musical experience or knowledge is required. Required Text/Listening. Kamien, Roger. Music: An Appreciation. 5 th brief edition. New York: McGraw-Hill, The book is accompanied by a set of 4 CD s. Course Requirements 1. Reading and listening assignments. Please complete all reading and listening assignments on time, in order to follow the lectures and participate in class discussion. You are strongly advised to listen repeatedly to the musical examples, so that you can think about what you are listening to. 2. Concert attendance and concert reports. Students will be required to attend a minimum of three live concerts of classical music during the course of the semester, and to write a one- to two-page report on each concert. More details on attending concerts and writing concert reports will follow. Concert reports are due on October 17, November 9 and December Homework assignments. I will give out short homework assignments from time to time. 4. Quizzes. There will be four quizzes during the semester, in addition to the final exam. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped. The quizzes are scheduled for September 19, October 10, October 31 and November 16. The quizzes will cover the reading and listening assignments, as well as material presented in class. 5. Final exam. The final exam will take place on Tuesday, December 19. The final exam will cover material from the entire semester.
2 6. Class participation. I will circulate a sign-in sheet at the beginning of each class session to keep track of attendance. Excessive absences from class will result in the lowering of your course grade. The course grade will be determined as follows: Final exam 35% Quizzes 30% Concert reports 15% Homework assignments 10% Class participation 10% Make-Up and Late Work. Students should make every effort to take quizzes and exams when they are scheduled and to submit homework assignments and concert reports on time. There will be no make-up quizzes. If you miss one quiz, it will count as your dropped quiz. Missing more than one quiz will adversely affect your grade for the course. A make-up final exam will be given only if you are ill and have a doctor s note and I am informed of your illness by before 11:00 am on the day of the exam. Otherwise, you will receive a failing grade for the course if you miss the final exam. Late assignments and concert reports will be penalized at the rate of a grade notch a day (B+ to B, etc.) for each day it is late. If an assignment/report is submitted more than a week late, you will receive a failing grade for that assignment/report. Academic Honesty. Cheating and plagiarism will be dealt with severely. Please note that I expect your written work to be entirely original work. It is not acceptable to copy or paraphrase work that has appeared elsewhere (including on websites) without indicating clearly that that is what you are doing. Plagiarism is a very serious academic violation: if you are not sure what it is, please come speak to me. Classroom Policies. Please be prompt and do not disrupt class by arriving late or leaving early. Please make sure all cellular phones, pagers, and other similar devices are turned off before class begins. 2
