1 NCMTA Conference 2015 October 15 18, 2015 Meredith College, Raleigh NC Presenter and Panelist Bios FRIDAY SESSIONS, OCTOBER 16, :10 pm 2:00 pm Why Arts Awareness and Advocacy Matters: A Panel Discussion Tayloe Harding, guest panelist, is a composer and Dean of the School of Music & Associate Provost for Community Engagement at the University of South Carolina. He serves as President of The CMS Fund, as national Secretary of the National Association for Schools of Music (NASM), & as Vice-President of Pi Kappa Lambda. Dr. Jonathan Govias, guest panelist, is internationally recognized for his activities as a conductor, writer, educator and public speaker. Appointed music director of a professional orchestra at the age of 22, he has since performed with orchestras on four continents, including the symphonies of Montréal, Cincinnati, San Diego, and the Tonhalle Orchester of Zurich. An authority on the intersection of music, industry and society, his speaking engagements since October 2010 include Cape Town University, Liverpool John Moores University, Hub Zurich, Hub Vienna, the NAMM, Alberta and Québec music education association conferences, London s South Bank Centre, the Mozarteum at Salzburg and Classical:NEXT in Rotterdam. He is currently Assistant Professor and Director of Orchestras at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. Dr. Dylan Savage, panelist and presider, is a Bösendorfer Concert Artist, a Capstone Records recording artist, and a first place winner of the Rome Festival Orchestra Competition. He has performed widely in the U.S., Virgin Islands, Malta, Austria, Japan, and Italy as a soloist and collaborative artist. His Duo Savage CD all rivers at once is critically acclaimed in the U.S. and U.K. He is a coauthor of the piano pedagogy book called A Symposium for Pianists and Teachers: Strategies to Develop Mind and Body for Optimal Performance, by Heritage Music Press. Dr. Savage is on the faculty of the University of North Carolina Charlotte. 3:00 pm 3:50 pm College Faculty Forum, Not Just for Pianists: A Panel Discussion Dr. Erika Boysen, NCMTA panelist, is the newly appointed Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Boysen received her DMA from the University of Michigan, MM from the New England Conservatory and BM from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

2 Dr. Catherine Garner, guest panelist, received her DMA in Collaborative Arts from Eastman, MM from FSU, and BM from LSU. She is founder of Music on a WIM, a monthly concert series dedicated to the performance of music by women composers. Dr. Garner is a pianist faculty member at East Carolina University. Dr. Ellen Williams, Meredith College panelist, Coordinator of Vocal Studies at Meredith College, has performed throughout the US and Europe. She has two CDs out with duo partner, Terry Rhodes, of American duet music, and one with tenor Timothy Sparks of Schoenberg s chamber version of Mahler s DAS LIED VON DER ERDE. She is Co-founder of the International Young Artists Project which takes young musicians to Italy to study and perform every summer. Dr. Inara Zandmane, guest panelist, is a leading collaborative pianist in our state. She >appears frequently with saxophonist Susan Fancher and violinist Fabián López, and performs with many others who include Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Augustin Hadelich, and Yura Lee. She is a staff pianist and teacher at UNCG and official accompanist at MTNA National Competitions since Organ Session: You Can Play This! JC Andrew Scanlon, FAGO, guest presenter, is a member of the keyboard faculty at East Carolina University School of Music, where he heads the graduate and undergraduate degree programs in organ and sacred music. He is also the organist-choirmaster at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Greenville. An international concert artist, Prof. Scanlon has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. He is a member of the American Guild of Organists National Committee on Professional Certification, where he serves as an examiner of organists nationwide. Andrew's latest CD recording was released in 2013 on the Raven Label; "Solemn and Celebratory" has garnered critical acclaim. 4:00 pm 4:50 pm Teaching Music to Students with Special Needs: A Student-Centered Approach Dr. Agnes Wan, guest presenter, is a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Loyola University New Orleans, the University of Iowa, and University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. With degrees in piano performance and music therapy, she is particularly interested in combining information from both academic fields in her research. She is a Steinway Artist. 3 Yuri Yamamoto, Meredith College, presenter, is an Adjunct Staff Accompanist at Meredith College and Director of Music at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh. After many years of strict classical piano and theory lessons in Japan, Yuri studied animal science and genetics in Japan and the United States. Eventually her passion for music came back to prompt a career change over 10 years ago. Yuri began improvising in 2011 and is currently in the Musicianship and Leadership Program of Music for People. She has presented two improvisational recitals at Meredith College and regularly leads Make a Joyful Noise!, an intergenerational improvisation workshop, at her church. The workshop is free and open to public, and the next workshop is on November 18. Yuri is also a composer, and her original album featuring Japanese songs and piano improvisation is available from Alison Weiner, guest presenter, is an improvising musician and the creator and caretaker of mahaloarts. For over thirty years, Alison has played jazz, R&B, rock and reggae music with all sorts of groups in all sorts of places in and around North Carolina, the Big Island of Hawai'i and South Florida. With degrees in architecture, jazz studies and music composition under her belt, Alison teaches, facilitates and performs in and around Carrboro NC. She is a Leader in the Musicianship and Leadership Program of Music for People ( In October 2014 she established the Sunday Evening Music Salon ( a monthly improvised music-making gathering in the Chapel Hill area open to anyone who wants to explore his/her musical self. More information about Agnes Wan can be found on her website at 9:45 am 10:45 am SPLIT SESSIONS Technology Tools for the Collaborative Musician Dr. Jim Waddelow, Meredith College, joined the faculty of Meredith College as Director of Instrumental Activities in 2007 where he conducts the Meredith Sinfonietta, White Iris Light Opera, and musical theater productions. He is the Music Director for the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Oklahoma Haydn Festival. A well-known string pedagogue, and clinician, he has conducted numerous all-state and all region orchestras, and he has been the Director of Strings at the Inspiration Point Summer Music Camp in Eureka Springs, Arkansas since Previous appointments include the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra, Lubbock Youth Symphony, Lubbock Moonlight Musicals, and Texas Tech University.

4 Chelsea Stith, guest presenter, is from Pittsboro, North Carolina, and grew up in a big family that still loves making music together. She completed her BM and BA in Piano Performance and Composition at Meredith College in Through undergraduate research projects that explored famous composers experiences with disabilities and mental health issues as well as her own personal connections, Chelsea realized that music therapy was a career that could bridge her different areas of interest as well as allow her to give back to her community. She completed her equivalency and masters in music therapy at Appalachian State University in May of While pursuing her studies in music therapy, Chelsea gained experience in working with a variety of populations while specializing in children and adolescents with disabilities and medical needs. She completed her internship at Children s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City before taking a position as Caldwell County Schools district music therapist. While working with students with special needs in the school system, Chelsea gained a new appreciation for the unique role that music therapy can have in addressing the social, emotional, and communication needs that may not receive the same emphasis as academic achievement within the school setting. Chelsea continues to be an active performer, playing in the annual Oklahoma City Haydn Festival and serving as the pianist for the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Kent Lyman, NCTM, NCMTA Local Conference Chair, presenting and presiding Dr. Kent Lyman is a Steinway Artist and Professor of Music at Meredith College. He has performed and taught extensively throughout the United States, and in South Korea, China, Brazil, and Italy. He maintains an active schedule as a collaborative pianist, working with the leading musicians of the Triangle area. He is the founding director of the Collaborative Piano Institute of the International Young Artists Project, based in Monte San Savino, Italy. IYAP is a program that provides opportunities for young singers and instrumentalists to study and perform for one month in beautiful Tuscan towns in the heart of Italy. The Great American Songbook: America s Art Song Jay Althouse, guest presenter, received B.S. and M.Ed. degrees in music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. For eight years he served as a rights and licenses administrator for a major educational music publisher. As a composer, Jay has more than 750 works in print for choirs of all levels. He has also compiled and arranged a number of highly regarded vocal solo collections, and is the co-writer of the best-selling books The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. Jay is the co-writer, with his wife, Sally, of I Hear America Singing, a choral work performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at the Inauguration of President Barack Obama in Jay has served on the boards of the Music Publishers Association of America, the North Carolina Master Chorale, and the Folk Art Society of America.

CCH Stephen Beus, NCMTA Conference Artist, see Conference Artist link on NCMTA website conference page: Vocal Studio Repertoire Class: Music and Materials for the Beginning to Intermediate Vocal Soloist Sally K. Albrecht, guest presenter, is a popular composer, conductor, and clinician. An annual recipient of the ASCAP Special Music Award since 1987, Sally has hundreds of chorals, songbooks, musicals, and movement DVDs in print. She has conducted honor choir events across the country, including festivals at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center. For 24 years, she was the Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications for Alfred Music. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Sally received a B.A. Degree from Rollins College (FL) with a double major in Music and Theater. From there she moved to the University of Miami, where she received both an M.A. in Drama and an M.M. in Accompanying. Expression in Music and Imaging Gordon Kreplin, NCMTA String Teachers Chair, presenter, is a concert artist with a camera; a photographic artist with a guitar; a writer; a teacher; a composer. Gordon has many muses. In his work as a nationally recognized photography professional, Gordon Kreplin teaches lighting for environmental portraiture at state level professional photographer conventions. In his work as a musician and music educator, Gordon teaches about the aesthetic tools of rhythm, color and composition to audiences and private students alike. For him, those tools are the essence of both music and photography. Learn more at and 1:00 2:15 pm SPLIT SESSIONS Piano Masterclass CCH Stephen Beus, NCMTA Conference Artist, see Conference Artist link on NCMTA website conference page: Vocal Masterclass Jennifer Seiger, guest presenter, mezzo soprano, has been recognized for her artistry in performances across the triangle with arts organizations including the NC Opera, Long Leaf Opera, NC Master Chorale and the Mallarmé Chamber Players. She has been heard earlier this year as Sara Miller in NC Opera's Approaching Ali and as the mezzo soloist with the NC Master Chorale Chamber Choir in their performance of Aaron Copland's In the Beginning. Students of hers have garnered lead roles in their

6 respective high school musicals and have had successful auditions for NATS at the District and Regional levels, Governor's School, Interlochen Music Festival, Boston Conservatory Summer Vocal Intensive, UNCSA High School division, UNCG School of Music, UNC School of Music,Peabody Conservatory, Boston Conservatory and the Eastman School of Music. Ms. Seiger is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Music and has a thriving private voice studio in Cary, NC where she lives with her husband and two daughters. 2:25 pm 3:15 pm SPLIT SESSIONS Programs with Pizzazz: Creative Ideas (and New Repertoire) to Spice Up Your Next Studio Piano Recital Morgan Butzow, Jacob Groff, Chrissy Ricker (NCTM), Kitty Scott and Simon Zaleski, presenters and founding members of the Carolina Contemporary Composers (C3) The Carolina Contemporary Composers are a group of composers and teachers from the Raleigh area dedicated to promoting new music in our community. Among its members are composers who have been published by Alfred, Kjos, and Lorenz, as well as member teachers of the Raleigh Piano Teachers Association. The Capital City Girls Choir Dr. Frances M. Page, presenter, is Head of the Department Communication and Performing Arts at Meredith College, where she also serves as Coordinator of Music Education and Director of Choral Activities. She teaches methods courses for music education majors and also K-6 teacher licensure students, advises music education majors and directs and supervises student teaching. Dr. Page is a Past-President of the North Carolina Music Educators Association and Past President of Southern Division MENC: The National Association for Music Education and in that capacity served on the National Executive Board of MENC. In July of 2004, Professor Page was named Tar Heel of the Week by the Raleigh News and Observer and in the spring of 2007, she was designated by the Capital City Girls Choir as an MENC Lowell Mason Fellow. 3:25 pm 4:15 pm SPLIT SESSIONS Rachmaninoff Meets Burt Bacharach: The Piano Etudes of Leslie Adams Dr. Thomas Otten, presenter, is a California native born of German-American parents, has been hailed by the New York Times as an extremely original player who puts a formidable technique at the service of his ideas. He made his debut at age seventeen with the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center, and has since developed a global profile, appearing in diverse international venues such as the Gasteig (Munich, Germany), St. Petersburg Conservatory (Russia), Teatro Nacional (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), and the Australian Institute of Music (Sydney). His national credits include recitals at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the National Press Club, as well as concerto soloist at the Chautauqua and Brevard Summer Festivals. His performances have been broadcast on both coasts, including WQXR New York, WGMS Washington, and KUSC Los Angeles.

7 Otten has been the recipient of numerous national and international prizes. A student of master teachers John Perry, Nelita True, and Barbara Lister-Sink, he holds performance degrees from the University of Southern California (DMA, MM) and the University of Maryland, College Park (BM, summa cum laude). He has been on the faculties of the Saarburger Serenaden International Music Festival (Germany), the American Institute of Musical Studies (Austria), and the Kent/Blossom Festival in Ohio. He currently chairs the piano area at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he joined the faculty in His debut CD, Tristan und Isolde: Piano Transcriptions of Franz Liszt, was released by MSR Classics in Chamber Music Elizabeth Beilman, guest panelist, is a native of Wichita, Kansas, joined the North Carolina Symphony in 1988 and serves as the orchestra s Associate Principal Cello. She is also a member of the Breckenridge Music Festival Chamber Orchestra. Since coming to Raleigh, she has performed in numerous recitals and ensembles in N.C. and has appeared as soloist with the North Carolina Symphony. Before her arrival in N.C., Ms. Beilman was Artist-in Residence for two years at the Banff Centre for the Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada. During that time, she toured throughout Canada, performed with Felix Galamir and with Menachem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio, and was featured at the Shawnigan Lake Festival in British Colombia. She is a co-founder of Aurora Musicalis with husband Jimmy Gilmore. Ms. Beilman holds both Bachelor s and Master s degrees in Music Performance from the Indiana University School of Music. While at I.U., she held a faculty position of Associate Instructor and served as Assistant to Fritz Magg, Distinguished Professor of Music. Other cello teachers were Anner Bylsma, Aldo Parisot and Paul Tortelier. Her extensive background in chamber music includes studies with Rostislav Dubinsky, Josef Gingold and Peter Oundjian. She has recorded for the Albany label as a member of Aurora Musicalis. Dedicated to music education, she is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the North Carolina Chamber Music Institute and Co-Director of the Lamar Stringfield Music Camp. In addition, she maintains a thriving studio of accomplished cello student Martin H. Brinkley, guest panelist, is an NCCMI trustee and their treasurer. Mr. Brinkley is an attorney specializing corporate and commercial law. He was recently appointed Dean of the UNC Law School is a Past President of the NC Bar Association. Mr. Brinkley's history of volunteer service to the Raleigh community is extensive. His full C.V. may be found online at Christina Maria Garey, guest panelist, is a singer-songwriter and composer, and a realtor, too! She studied Music Theory and Composition in the studio of Dr. Christopher Palestrant and received a Bachelor's degree in Music from Elizabeth City State University this past year. A resident of the Outer Banks, NC., where she regularly performs, Ms. Garey plays original songs, jazz tunes, pop and classical music. Chrissy Ricker, NCTM, NCMTA panelist, is a pianist, teacher, and composer from Fuquay-Varina. She received her B.M. and M.M. degrees in piano performance and pedagogy from Meredith College. Chrissy performs locally as a collaborative pianist and maintains an active piano studio in the Triangle area. She is a member of the MTNA,NCMTA, and the RPTA. Chrissy was a recipient of the RPTA s 2014 Teacher Merit Award. Her main compositional focus is writing motivating and educational music for students. She is a founding member of the Carolina Contemporary Composers ( C3 ), a group that presents community concerts of original compositions. Four collections of Chrissy s compositions for elementary through intermediate level piano have been published by Kjos Music Company. 4:25 pm 5:15 pm Elements of Rhythm Drum Circle! Greg Whitt, guest presenter, supports the idea that there's a natural order to things and that we cannot holistically separate ourselves from these inherent rhythms of life. As a facilitator, he works to rewrite the story and strengthen the connections. As an educator, he teaches how we can do this in partnership with the ancient wisdom traditions of the world. As a rhythmatist he helps entrain and harmonize, both within ourselves and within the larger circle. Greg has twice received Regional Artist Project Grants from the United Arts Council of Raleigh to fund folkloric research with Caribbean rhythmacultures. He holds a graduate certificate in Transformative Leadership from the Maryland University of Integrative Health. He serves as president of the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild. Greg regularly facilitates interactive and inspirational programs for groups of 10 to 300 people. L. Lohr Tom L. Lohr, NCMTA Commissioned Composer and Performer Tom Lohr, 2015 NCMTA Commissioned Composer, has been an Instructor of Piano at Meredith College since 1979, teaching piano, composition, choral arranging, and music theory seminars. Lohr is the Director of the Meredith College Community School of Music (the non-credit division of the Department of Music) as well as the summer piano camp, beginners' piano camp, middle school composition camp, intensive piano camp and high school theory camp. During his time at Meredith College Lohr has taught undergraduate piano majors, graduate students and all levels of non-credit students in the Community School of Music ranging in ages from 6 to 82. Both his piano students and composition students are often winners of area competitions. One young composition student was the 2013 winner of the Music Teachers National Association s Composition

9 Competition (Southern Division). Students from nine states in the south east entered compositions in the contest. Former students of his have pursued music further study at such noted schools as Indiana University, Boston Conservatory and the Julliard School. As a composer, Lohr has written works for performers of various media including solo piano, piano fourhands, organ, choral works, a one-act opera, collections of songs, chamber music and several works for orchestra. His piano works are available through Allen Herther Music at allen.herther.music@aol.com or by calling (919) SUNDAY SESSIONS, OCTOBER 18, :45 am 9:50 am Hidden Gems: Expanding Piano Repertoire with Underrepresented Composers CCH Akiko Yamazaki, NCMTA Junior Competition Coordinator and NCMTA IMTF Scholarship Recipient, presenter. Pianist Akiko Yamazaki is an expressive performer and passionate teacher based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She started her piano studies at the age of five, and after she moved to the US, continued her studies with Kathleen Van Doeren in Minnesota and David Watkins in Georgia. She holds a master of music degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University where she studied under the tutelage of James Giles. She holds a bachelor of music degree in piano performance with highest distinction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her principle teacher was Mayron Tsong. Further studies include Piano Summer at New Paltz, Duxbury Music Festival, Schlern International Music Festival, Beijing International Music Festival, and Kamisaibara Piano Festival. Yamazaki is devoted to educating and mentoring young pianists. She runs an innovative studio where learning is driven by passion and curiosity. She strives to help her students grow as a musician and person while discovering the joy of music. Many of her students have been prize winners in festivals and competitions at local and regional levels. She is active as a presenter, master class clinician and adjudicator. Yamazaki was the 2009 recipient of the MTNA StAR award, awarded for her excellence in teaching and leadership. Yamazaki appeared as a soloist with Raleigh Symphony Orchestra in 2005 as a recipient of the Benjamin Kilgore Gibbs award. She was awarded the IMTF Grant by NCMTA to study and perform music of Clara Schumann and Toru Takemitsu in As a chamber musician, she has given recitals across the United States with fine artists including clarinetists Donald Oehler, Edwin Riley, Nicholas Morrison, Andrea Splittberger-Rosen, violinists Kate Carter, Katharina Uhde, Leah Peroutka, and soprano Suzanne Post. In 2014, she gave the world premiere of Matthew Worlovich's Dawn Rhapsody with violinist Karen Galvin. She has worked as an accompanist coach for the music department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been on the faculty at UNC International Chamber Music Workshop. She is an active leader in community service and outreach as a pianist and teacher. She has organized benefit concerts for A Helping Hand, UNC Children's Hospital and TABLE. Through her performances and

10 teaching, she has supported Upbeat, The People's Music School and International Children's Center in Chicago and Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief. Her students regularly share their talents in the community. Akiko has served as president of Chapel Hill Music Teachers Association. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society, Durham Music Teachers Association, North Carolina Music Teachers Association, and Music Teachers National Association. 10:00 am 10:50 am Piano Improvisation: Filling in the Gap Dr. Richard McKee, presenter, was born in Montgomery, Alabama and attended Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama, receiving the Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance. He studied with Delores Howard, who was a student of Rosina Lhevinne. He then went to Manhattan School of Music and studied piano with the late Constance Keene and with Marc Silverman, who is now the Chairman of the Piano Department at Manhattan School of Music. Afterwards he moved to Chapel Hill to study Musicology at UNC, earning a Ph.D. degree. While in graduate school at UNC, he taught piano lessons privately and kept up his playing. In 1988 he was appointed adjunct instructor in piano at Meredith College, where he taught Applied Piano, Ear- Training and Sight-Singing. Since 1989 he has been an adjudicator for festivals in the Raleigh area and Eastern North Carolina. In 1994 he became a full-time Professor of Music at Campbell University, where he is currently Chair of the Division of Fine Arts as well as Director of Piano Studies. He teaches Applied Piano, Music History, Piano Pedagogy, and Piano Literature. In May, 2000, he was selected for the Dean s Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. McKee has presented lectures and lecture-recitals to various groups, including professional music organizations. His most recent lecture-recital was on the topic of interpretation of Mussorgsky s Pictures At an Exhibition, presented to the NCMTA State Convention meeting in October, In recent years he has performed as soloist with the Campbell University String Ensemble and the Campbell University Wind Ensemble. He also performed at Campbell with his wife, Renee, in a duopiano recital in the Fall of In September 2007, he was one of two pianists who presented the music on the NCMTA Competition List to piano teachers in Raleigh and in Charlotte. In February 2008, he delivered a paper titled Modernism and Postmodernism in Musical Performance: A Christian Perspective as part of a Multidisciplinary Conference at Gardner-Webb University. He also performs with his wife, Renee, in duo-piano recitals, most recently in January and September Dr. McKee has been a piano teacher since 1980 and has taught all ages and levels, from beginners through College Piano Majors.
