Textbook: Rhythmic Training for Dancers by Robert Kaplan. Course Goals and Objectives: Apply fundamental music concepts (meter, accented/unaccented beats, measures, phrases, formal structure and tempo designations) to dance movements. Make relationships between choreographic musical need and music resources in style and quality. Select and execute appropriate accompaniment for dance phrases. Understand rhythm, basic form and pitch notation in order to work collaboratively with musicians/composers. Student Learning Outcomes: * Demonstrate fundamental relationships between the language of dance and the language of music through various visual and audio exercises. * Use correct music terminology in tasks related to elements of dynamics, rhythm, melody and harmony * Read, count and conduct a musical score Understand basic musical elements, styles and compositional forms Understand stylistic traits of music and how they relate to dance

2 Course Content: Music terminology including the formal elements of music Musical styles and how they relate to dance Computer applications for learning and studying music Conducting and reading music Individual final project Become Musical Literate (including technology with a CD) Grading: 25% -Terminology (class participation, assignments, quizzes and tests) 25 points 25%- Style and Musical Time Periods (class participation, assignments, quizzes/tests) 25 points 25%- Computer work (technology based on assignments) 25 points 25%- Individual Final Music Project/Final Exam 25 points Attendance is mandatory. No excused absences will be given. -5 points from Final grade for each absence Assignments will be given on a daily/weekly basis for understanding music theory and how it relates to dance. Some assignments will be given in the computer lab and in the dance studio. Students are expected to complete each assignment on time. Late work will not be accepted. Technology The use of technology is a wonderful aid for communication and learning, but it must be used appropriately. No cell phones, pda s, mp3 players, or other devices are allowed on or out in the classroom unless authorized by the instructor. Sending, reading and/or receiving text messages is also inappropriate in the classroom. It is unethical and unacceptable to use recording devices (such as camera phones, digital video, etc) in or outside of the classroom to film or photograph faculty, staff or students without their permission. If any devices are out or go off (making any sound at all) during class time, the device may be confiscated and the owner s grade may be penalized.
