Reminders could be sent home as a flyer but please check IC and the website for information. The last page of this syllabus will be sent home for parent/student signature Procedures and Expectations 7th Grade Choir Rehearsals Rehearsals are a part of the regular school day. However, there is a small chance of an after school or evening combined group rehearsal prior to a performance. 6 mechanical pencils. 2 Dry Erase markers. Spiral Notebook Supplies for Choir Daily Routine and Expectations No backpacks. Take your seat right away if chairs are in proper formation. If chairs need formation, please begin to assist with the set-up. Talking during actual rehearsal times will greatly reduce the effectiveness of our choir s performance. Specific times to STOP talking Intercom Telephone Visitor or Staff comes in to speak with one of us When teacher or accompanist is speaking When a student is asking a question or addressing the class Each class will be split into smaller groups to help give better attention to each singer and will alternate being in choir and going to study hall. These study hall

2 days will be at most two days a week and we will try to keep them on a regular schedule. There will be times when we will need to move or not give study hall days (especially right before a concert) and we will give as much notice as possible Please do not play the piano or other instruments without permission or supervision. Inappropriate Behavior: You can expect the following sequence of consequences for inappropriate behavior: Verbal warning 2 nd Verbal warning with a probable classroom consequence (a responsibility you will have to carry out in the classroom) Although we don t anticipate problems of this kind, a serious behavior problem might warrant an immediate office referral without the normal sequence of consequences. Attendance is required (See grading procedures) Friday, May 10, :30pm call time 7:00pm Concert: Junior High Spring Choir Concert. North Campus Auditorium. Attendance is required (See grading procedures) Course Description Development of Vocal and Choral Skills at the Beginning and Intermediate Levels Choral Warm-ups and exercises for vocal technique and development Solfege as a method of sight-singing and ear-training Proper posture Breathing techniques Correct methods of vocalization Proper formation of vowel sounds essential to good singing Diction Choral rehearsal etiquette Reading of choral scores Gradual development of skills in harmonization/parts Intonation Development of Knowledge and Application of Music Theory at the Beginning and Intermediate Levels Clefs, Notation Keys and Key Signatures WITH Application to Solfege -- Use keys up to 1 flat, 1 sharp; Acquaint keys up to 2 flats, 2 sharps;

3 Rhythms practice of dotted quarter and eighth patterns, dotted eighth and sixteenth patterns, corresponding rests Intro to Varied Meters Scales, chords, and chord progressions for the 7th grade vocalist -- Major scales, major and minor chord recognition, I- IV- V progression in solfege Increase interval recognition as it applies to solfege Development of Musicianship Musical Phrasing Music as a means of communication Blending with others Dynamic interpretation Stylistic interpretation Musical terminology as given in the Core Knowledge sequences for 5-8. Character Building Team concept Traits to be promoted: self-control, humility, diligence, responsibility, respect, graciousness, and kindness, to mention a few Development of Repertoire Rehearsal and eventual performance of a selected group of aesthetically valuable choral pieces that vary in style while promoting musical growth. This may include: Pieces from classical music literature Music with the text set in other languages Folk music from America and other cultures Music reflecting national and world history such as spirituals, music of the 30 s, 40 s, & 50 s, jazz, etc. Seasonal music such as Christmas music Pieces from musical theatre Choral repertoire selected for its teaching value Other contemporary and traditional pieces chosen to bring in a variety of styles and moods Identification of musical styles and various musical periods Students previous training in identifying the music of various composers, periods, and styles will be reinforced while repertoire is being built. Students may be introduced to some musical styles and time periods that were not previously studied in earlier grades. The Voice as an instrument Proper care of the voice Grading and Assessment

4 Students will demonstrate progress or achieve proficiency in the following areas. (It is expected that student skill levels will vary according to the degree of prior experience.) Sight-singing through knowledge of notation and the solfege method Ear-training: recognition of intervals and the ability to sing them through use of the solfege method as well as theory study Rhythm reading and executing rhythm patterns of gradually increasing difficulty Proper Vocal Technique as evidenced by progress in breathing, posture, vowel production, positions of palate, jaw, etc. 10% : skills assessment of the above mentioned skills 10% : formal assessments of the above mentioned skills 20% : attendance, effort, behavior, and appearance at PERFORMANCES Inappropriate dress could result in not being able to perform in the concert and losing performance grade. Rehearsal Participation /Effort/ Attitude Given the participatory nature of the choral experience and the junior high level, the following factors will influence the student s grade: 50% : Daily attentiveness and participation effort 10% : teamwork/initiative -- works well and courteously with section/choir, questions, volunteerism, etc. Grading Scale (Universal to TCA) A A B B B C C C D D D- < 60 F

Solid Dark Belt with slacks, Dark Shoes, Dark leggings (socks, hose, tights) Solid colored scarf (optional) NOTE: If your black shirt/blouse is not TCA appropriate for the concert you will be asked to wear one from our stock. 9 Hello Choir Parents and Students, We have an auditorium!!! We are so excited to be able to perform in this wonderful space but it will come with some changes. Since the auditorium is smaller than the gym we will be doing the following for the concert in December, please read closely as it can be confusing. Thursday December 13, :00pm the following groups will be performing: 7th Grade Choir and High School Choirs. You will need to reserve tickets (NOT specific Seats) for a 7:00pm concert. If ALL of the tickets are reserved and more people are needing/wanting to attend we will open up reserved tickets (NOT specific Seats) for a second concert that will begin earlier in the evening. You will not be able to switch your tickets for the earlier time as that is not the purpose of opening up a second performance. If an earlier performance is required we will let you know as soon as possible so you and your singers can prepare. More information will come as we iron out more wrinkles.
