Lake Olympia Middle School Band Information Form and Handbook Mr. Jackson, Head Director (281) Mr. Allen, Assistant Director (281) Mr. Eric Hughes, Percussion BAND PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Lake Olympia Middle School Band program is divided into four different groups: Beginner Band: The Beginner Band is for students with little or no prior background in playing a band instrument. Students will learn how to produce a characteristic sound on their instrument, be able to read music, and understand basic musical terms and skills. Members of Beginner Band will perform in at least two concerts during the year. Concert Band: The Concert Band is a non-contest group designed for students who have played their instrument for more than a year. The focus of the class is to strengthen and remediate fundamentals and to encourage strong practice and rehearsal skills. Members of Concert Band will play in at least two concerts during the year. Symphonic Band: The Symphonic Band is for students that can already read music, create a characteristic tone, have a strong foundation of technique on their instrument, and are knowledgeable enough to prepare music outside of the classroom. Symphonic Band members perform 6+ times in a school year and compete in band competitions such as Region Band, Solo & Ensemble, FBISD Band Contest, and UIL Concert & Sight Reading. Honor Band: The Honor Band is the top-performing ensemble and is designed for the highest performing students in the program. These students exhibit strong music-reading/sight-reading skills, quality tone production, technical facility on their instrument, and eagerness to perform difficult music. Students in this group show a robust interest in playing and performing at a high level. Honor Band students perform 6+ times in a school year and compete in band competitions such as Region Band, Solo & Ensemble, FIBSD Band Contest, and UIL Concert & Sight Reading. Per district policy, all students are placed by audition into the Concert, Symphonic, and Honor Bands by the directors. CHARMS: Your first stop for all things band! To enter, go to: Click: ENTER at the top right Choose: Parents/Students/Members Enter school code: LKOlympiaMSB Student specific password: 6 digit FBISD ID number. It is suggested to change the password once you have logged in. If the password is forgotten, we can reset it back to his/her ID number. Once in Charms you may download and print practice reflection sheets, update student and parent information, view the band calendar, contact the directors, etc.
TURNING IN MONEY If paying by cash or check, please seal the payment in an envelope with your child s name, director s name, the date, and reason for the payment (e.g., donation or solo & ensemble entry fee ). Students becoming ineligible for a trip due to grades/conduct will not receive a refund except for trips involving trip insurance provided through an out of district insurance company. It is up to the parent to initiate the trip refund by contacting the insurance company. Students becoming ineligible or needing to back out of for Region Band auditions and Solo & Ensemble contest will not receive a refund for their entry fee. Students are still expected to pay their pianist for Solo & Ensemble for his/her time and preparation. CONCERT ATTIRE Football Season Attire This is what we will wear for our fall concert, band night, football game performances, auditions, etc. Symphonic and Honor Bands Only Band t-shirt, blue jeans or blue jean shorts/skirts of appropriate length, and athletic shoes of any color Concert Season This is what we will wear for our winter concert, spring concert, and most band competitions. Beginner Band Band t-shirt and blue jeans Concert, Symphonic, and Honor Bands White tuxedo shirt, black bowtie, black cummerbund, black slacks, black dress shoes/socks RULES AND EXPECTIONS The LOMS Bands are held to the following expectations: 1. Follow directions the first time they are given. 2. Bring your instrument in working condition as well as all necessary materials to class every day. 3. Respect everyone in this class. This includes: Remain silent, with your hand raised, until called upon by a teacher to ask a question or share your thoughts and observations. Never touch other people or things that do not belong to you. Use school-appropriate language when at school and on trips. 4. Non-band students are not allowed in the band hall (they may wait outside the door). 5. Follow all school policies. In addition, every band student needs to practice for at least minutes for 5 nights a week in order to improve. Any amount of time less than that will lead to insecurity when performing and can result in lower band grades. If there is not a suitable space for the student to practice at home, he/she may utilize the school s practice rooms before or after school. This time may be recorded on the child s practice card. Students must sign up for practice rooms before entering to practice.
To avoid injury and loss of confidence, avoid having orthodontia work done 2 weeks before performances unless it is an emergency. It is best to discuss this with the band directors. If an instrument needs to go to the shop for repair, have the work completed at least 2 weeks before a performance or audition. A student s grade will not suffer if there is a written note or from a parent stating that the instrument is getting repaired. Unless the directors are provided with a pass from the school nurse or a note from the student s doctor, students have 4 restroom passes per 9-week grading terms. CONDUCT All band students are held to the same code of conduct addressed in the Lake Olympia Student Handbook. The following is a list of additional expectations and rules specific to the band program: All band members need to maintain a conduct grade of an S or above in band to participate in band activities. Students with difficulty improving their conduct grade will pay consequences determined by the directors. Students stealing from the LOMS Band Program or from its students will be immediately reported to an administrator, which can lead to suspension from all band activities and/or worse. Intentional destruction or vandalism of an instrument or personal property will result in immediate office referral. Parent(s) or guardian(s) are responsible for all replacement costs for damaged or destroyed objects caused by or related to their child s actions. Students renting an instrument from FBISD should maintain at least an 80 average in band accompanied by an E in conduct. If a student fails to maintain the grade or conduct requirement, the parent or guardian(s) will be notified by phone or . Students caught misbehaving, carrying illegal paraphernalia, or violating the Lake Olympia Middle School code of conduct may be immediately sent home from a trip without a refund. The incident will be reported to the proper administrators and law authorities. PRIVATE LESSONS FBISD offers a private lesson program for all band students, no matter what ability level. A separate form will be handed out near the beginning of the school year if interested in lessons. Here are some things to consider: Private lessons are for all students of every ability level; every student has specific strengths and weaknesses when it comes to playing an instrument. Private lessons focus, reinforce and sharpen good habits while preventing bad habits from forming and defeating the child s efforts. Students should have lessons at least once a week for at least 30 minutes for the best long lasting impact. Students may enter private lesson time on practice reflection sheets. Students that take lessons are more likely to succeed at Region auditions. FBISD INSTRUMENT USAGE FEE Students playing a school owned instrument will pay a once a year fee of $80 to the LOMS Band Program which coincides with a grade/behavior agreement. This fee is applied towards the maintenance and servicing of all Fort Bend ISD instruments. Students on the free and reduced lunch program are exempt from payment. A separate form for this fee will be provided near the beginning of the school year. Eligible instruments include: bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion (all percussion students must pay the fee in order to use the school-owned percussion instruments).
If a school owned instrument needs repair, consult Mr. Jackson or Mr. Allen immediately. If damage to a school owned instrument appears to be done by malicious intent, the parents of the child will reimburse FBISD for the repair or replacement of the instrument. GRADING POLICY Daily Grades Practice Reflection: This is a completion grade to be due every Monday (or first week of band that week). It must be signed and dated by a parent or guardian to receive credit. Incomplete information on the practice card will result in a grade less than a 100. Students without a printer may write their practice cards on a sheet of paper but it must include the same information as the printed version. Rehearsal Grade: Every week students receive a grade for their participation in class. Below is how students may earn points: Beginner and Concert Bands - Each class period is worth a total of 20 points. Below is how students earn points for the day: Having your instrument: 10 points 1 Having your music binder with music and pencil: 10 points Symphonic and Honor Bands - Each class period is worth a total of 15 points (a total of 75 points) and the weekly sectionals/rehearsals, required by the FBISD Fine Arts handbook, are worth 25 points. Below is how students earn points: Having your instrument: 10pts per day 1 Having your black music binder with pencil: 5pts per day Attending required sectionals: 25pts 2 1 Your instrument must be in working condition; if it is not, then active participation is impossible and required improvement will not take place. Clarinets and saxophones need to have 4 or more reeds ready to play at all times and oboes and bassoons should have at least 2. 2 Excused absences, detailed later in the handbook under Sectionals and Rehearsals, will not result in a loss of points Miscellaneous: The director may take grades over fundamentals learned, whether or not the student s measures are numbered, if things have been marked appropriately in their music, participation in activities, etc. Major Grades Performance Tests: These will be tests performed on the instrument over the student s music assignments. Beginners should expect these tests almost every week. Per district policy, Symphonic and Honor Band students may be asked to take these either in class or in the required sectionals/rehearsals. Theory Tests: These will be tests over musical notation, terms, and information found in the student s music.
Binder Check: All students must have a 1 inch black binder and sheet protectors to keep track of their music. The directors will check this as a grade throughout the year. Information will be provided as to how grading will occur at the time of the binder check. Objective Mastery: The director may assign a period of time in which the student must pass off specific objectives by showing mastery (either they pass it off or they do not). Examples of items include scales, region music, solo & ensemble music, concert music, and technical exercises. If the director gives an exceptionally large amount of items to be passed off and/or a large time frame to work within, this may count as a double major grade to demonstrate the student s time and effort put into the project. Concerts: Per the FBISD Fine Arts handbook, concerts are worth two major grades. We will determine the two grades in the following manner: Concert Attendance: If the student shows up on time, they make a 100. Tardiness will result in a loss of points determined by the director. Concert Etiquette: If the student displays correct, learned concert etiquette, they will make a 100. Failure to wear the correct uniform or display learned procedures will result in a loss of points determined by the director. Semester Exams Students will take a written comprehensive exam at the end of each semester per district policy. This can include music theory, musical terms and symbols, and all concepts covered throughout the semester. A review sheet will be given. Bonus Grades Students will be given the opportunity to earn bonus grades throughout the year for going above and beyond the requirements given. Examples of this include being eligible to audition for region band, making region band, making a Division I on a solo or ensemble, going to a professional musical performance etc. These items will be announced throughout the year by the directors. Make-up and Retests Daily grades may be turned in for a 10-point deduction per day late. The exception to this is the Rehearsal Grade. Absent students are expected to turn in their work the first day they return, as well as meet with the directors to see what they missed and if/when they need to make-up any work. Per FBISD policy, students that fail a major grade (with the exceptions of projects) may re-take that grade for no higher than a 75. It is up to the student to schedule a time with the director to make-up the grade. In band, concerts and objective-mastery ( pass offs ) are our projects and cannot be re-taken. NO PASS, NO PLAY This is a summary of House Bill 72, which became law in Students will be suspended from participation in extracurricular band activities (Region Band Contest, Solo & Ensemble Contest, FBISD Band Contest, UIL Stage and Sight Reading, band parties/trips, etc.) if they have a grade of below a 70 in any class on a report card. Eligibility is not regained until they are passing the class at the next progress report or report card. Students are allowed and required to play at non-contest performances as they are considered co-curricular and seen as an extension of the classroom.
BAND TRIPS Students who have a failing grade on a report card or an N or U for their conduct in band will not be allowed to participate in band trips. Students becoming ineligible for a trip due to grades/conduct will not receive a refund except for trips involving trip insurance. It is up to the parent to initiate the trip refund by contacting the insurance company. SECTIONALS AND REHEARSALS (OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DAY) According to the FBISD Fine Arts Handbook, band is a co-curricular course. This means that sectionals and rehearsals outside of normal school hours are seen as an extension of the classroom and are subject to grading. We can require one hour of sectionals and two hours of full ensemble rehearsals weekly. According to FBISD these are required, meaning students will receive grades based on sectionals/rehearsals. Students will lose points for unexcused absences. Beginner Band and Concert Band will not have sectionals and will have a very limited amount of rehearsals outside of the school day as these ensembles are not contest bands. The only rehearsals they may have would be for their two concerts, and advanced notice will be given. Symphonic and Honor Band will have sectionals and rehearsals outside of the school day as they are both contest bands and these rehearsals are required by FBISD. Sectionals will begin the third week of school. We will not have full ensemble rehearsals until the Spring Semester, and advanced notice will be given. The sectional and rehearsal schedule will be posted on the CHARMS calendar. Excused absences: Unless an emergency, the parent/guardian should provide a written note or the directors a week in advance indicating that the student will not be able to attend the sectional. In this case, the student will not lose points but should contact the director to see what they need to make-up (may be required to attend another time). Excused absences include emergencies (personal and family), illness, major family events (weddings, funerals, reunions, etc.), observance of religious holidays, or other director-approved items. Please try your best to schedule appointments outside of the students lesson time if at all possible. Unexcused absences: Anything not listed above is an unexcused absence. If there is no parent/guardian or written note in advance (unless an emergency) it is an unexcused absence. Lack of planning does not constitute an excused absence. An excusal note after the fact (unless an emergency) will not be accepted. Unexcused absences result in a loss of points from the Rehearsal Grade and a ten-point deduction from any graded tests given during the sectional/rehearsal. Students should contact the director to see what they need to make-up. Excessive unexcused absences can result in failure to perform at contests and concerts per the director s discretion. Tardiness: It is expected that students are in their seats with their instruments ready when sectionals begin. Tardiness can result in a loss of points from a student s rehearsal grade at the director s discretion. If the tardy is extreme, it is possible that no points will be given for that sectional. REGION BAND Region Band is strictly for Symphonic and Honor Band students. All students will work on the Region audition music in order to develop technique on their instrument. Music will be taught in sectionals, but only students who prepare the music to a high level outside of class time will be eligible to audition for the Region Band. Students are strongly encouraged to seek extra help through lessons with lesson teachers and tutorials with the directors. Students advancing into the Region Band need to make time to participate in the concert-clinic or let the directors know at least 2 weeks prior if he/she is not able to attend. Students must be eligible in order to
audition and participate in Region Band. Students becoming ineligible will not receive a refund for their entry fee. If a student backs out of competing after the deadline for any reason, they will not receive a refund. SOLO & ENSEMBLE Solo & Ensemble is for Symphonic and Honor Band students, though if a student in Concert Band or Beginner Band displays a high level of skill the directors may allow him/her to participate at their discretion. Solos and ensembles may be practiced during sectionals, but it is expected that students practice on their own time as well. Students are highly encouraged to seek extra help through lessons and tutorials with the directors. If students become ineligible thus rendering themselves unable to participate in Solo & Ensemble, they will not receive a refund for their entry fee, and they are still responsible to pay their pianist for their time and preparation. The same is true for students that back out of competing after the deadline. BAND CONTESTS (FBISD/UIL STAGE & SIGHT READING/ETC.) Students who are ineligible cannot attend any band contests. In addition, it is up to the director s discretion as to whom is fit to participate. Sectional and rehearsal attendance, conduct, performance ability, and band grades will help make the director s decision. Parents will be notified if their child is chosen not to participate with an explanation as to why. COMMUNICATION WITH COACHES/SPONSORS Many band students are in athletics or other activities and that is perfectly okay. There will be cases where activities, rehearsals, practices, etc. conflict with each other and the key is communication. The band directors will work with the coaches and sponsors to resolve these conflicts, but the student and parents should be part of the communication as well. As soon as a conflict of scheduling is noticed, it should be brought to the band director s attention. TENTATIVE SECTIONAL SCHEDULE The schedule below is for Symphonic and Honor Band.
