2 WELCOME TO THE TASMANIAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA! We re all about supporting young Tasmanian musicians to realise their potential, both on and off the stage. We warmly welcome anyone who would like to get involved in our ensembles. Our program caters to those who have been learning their instrument for only 6 months, up to those on the cusp of a professional career. There s something for musicians of all levels, aged 7 to 26. Find the perfect group for you choose from orchestras, choirs, and string, wind and percussion groups. Rehearse weekly in the company of new friends, supported by expert conductors and tutors. A very special announcement for 2018 is the addition of choirs to our program. We are very excited to be working with Tasmanian Youth Chorale and their expert choir directors, Andrew Bainbridge and Estelle Levy as we welcome them to the team. Being part of an ensemble is like nothing else. It s a living, breathing, excitement-generating machine. It s team sport for musicians. It s a society of like-minded individuals, working together to achieve a goal of utter beauty. If you re yet to experience it, don t miss out! We look forward to hearing from you. Michelle Forbes General Manager Tasmanian Youth Orchestra FIND ME AN ENSEMBLE I play the violin, viola, cello, or double bass and am between the ages of 7 and 16. ACADEMY STRINGS OR CAMERATA STRINGS (PAGE 7) I play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument and am between the ages of 7 and 16. Wind Ensemble (page 6) or Philharmonic Orchestra (page 5) STRINGS (PAGE 7) I am in high school or university and I am playing at an instrumental grade 7 standard or higher. TYO (PAGE 3) I play the violin, viola, cello, or double bass and have been playing for at least four years. Philharmonic Orchestra (page 5) or TYO (page 3) I play percussion and want to do something different. PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE (PAGE 6) I don t play an instrument but I love music. Try our new choirs (page 8) Each ensemble has catered entry points to ensure musicians are being supported in their development. We start the year on moderately easy pieces and work our way to the harder ones as the year, and players, progress. Great care is taken to find varied repertoire that is fun, instructive and musically satisfying. Which ensemble will you apply for? 2

Participation in this brand new program will be by invitation and offer TYO players a chance to develop their leadership and ensemble skills. Best of all, this program is FREE to invited TYO players. This is an ensemble where life-long friendships are formed with like-minded peers. 5 SPECIAL PROJECT Philharmonic Orchestra will join forces with hundreds of voices from around the state to open the 2018 Festival of Voices. Not a problem you can now join TYO! Learn how to project your voice, read music, and sing in parts. Repertoire is carefully curated to support the development of our youngest musicians, fostering their growth as musicians and as young people. 6 HOW TO APPLY FIRST THINGS FIRST Decide which ensemble sounds right for you then head to tyo.org.au. Click Auditions to complete the online application form and pay the audition fee. All applicants must audition for a position in the 2018 TYO program. Auditions will be held over three days. Applicants can nominate days they re not available, however final times allocated will be dependent on panel and venue availability. You ll be notified on Friday 17 November, AUDITION REQUIREMENTS AUDITION FEE Auditions require payment of a non-refundable application fee of $40. RECORDED Applicants who are unable to attend a live audition can submit a recorded audition. After submitting their application, applicants should contact the TYO for recorded audition information (info@tyo.org.au). APPLICATIONS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE All applications must be received by TYO by Monday 13 November, AUDITION VENUE All auditions will be held at : 71 Nelson Road, Sandy Bay. Musicians playing in two ensembles can attend the cheaper ensemble free! TYO offers a range of bursaries and payment instalment options. Further details will be provided with 2018 offers. Everyone is strongly encouraged to apply, regardless of financial situation. 10
