2 The Arranger Deborah aker Monday continues to teach in the award-winning Logan City Utah orchestra rogram. She received her.m.e. magna cum laude rom lorida State University with an emhasis in string education. She was awarded an academic ellowshi to attend the University o Alabama where she received her M.M. in Comosition. She continued her studies at Louisiana State University where she received the Chancellor s Award to articiate with the LSU symhony orchestra under the direction o ames Yestadt. She has studied theory and comosition with Harold Schiman ohn oda rederic Goossen Paul Hedwall and Dinos Constantinides. Ms. Monday continued to be an active bass erormer when she moved to Utah. Ater comleting the coursework and assing the written and oral ortions o the doctoral exams she was hired to teach in the Logan City School District as a low string secialist. During her tenure with Logan she has ursued her interest in comosition and arranging or educational strings. This has been a rewarding art o her career while she and her husband ill have raised our amazing children. Ms. Monday has resented at numerous state music conerences throughout America as well as several national ASTA conventions and the Midwest Clinic. She is very active as a guest conductor and adudicator and has received awards and commissions or her work. Her studies in comosition and exerience in string teaching combine to make her one o the leading contributors to the reertoire or young string layers. The Arrangement In the Learning ank (next age) we discover that Rimsky-Korsakov was a master o the orchestral alette. A string orchestra arrangement o his work thereore needs to oer a variety o string colors to give credit to the original orchestration. In this arrangement I strove to rovide students with a erormance oortunity worthy o Rimsky-Korsakov s brilliant original. Procession o the Nobles has always been a avorite or the advancing strings in a ull orchestra setting: now it is available or string orchestra in the keys well suited or Grade 3. As the title suggest this estive music was written to accomany a crowd singing The rinces are coming! Make way or them The mood is very maestic and roud and the arrangement ocuses on the iece s lyrical melodic assages which can be so rewarding to young string layers. The trumet anares although shortened have the same eect o creating excitement and exectation; they also serve as harmonic transitions between the large thematic sections. The key o G maor oers a resonant sound or the violas and cellos to state the irst melodic theme which is then re-stated in the violins u an octave. The harmonies are rich and the rhythms are driving. In the section (m. 65) the key changes to string-riendly C maor; and in the inal return o the A section (m. 87) the iece stays in the key o C extending the range o the irst violins while reserving the richness oered by the viola and cello C strings. The original dotted-eighth/sixteenth attern has been relaced with an eighth note ollowed by two reeated sixteenths. This will otimize students sound roduction. The orchestra is given the oortunity to lay in legato and siccato bowing styles this variety o articulation will hel create dierent instrumental colors within the string orchestra. 3 3 Learning ank: Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov ( ) Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is a Russian comoser o the Romantic era. His musical career began in the 860s when he moved to St. Petersburg and beriended a grou o revolutionary young comosers known as The ive (or The Mighty Handul ). The grou was committed to develoing a genuinely Russian style o music through the incororation o traditional olksong. This made The ive an inluential orce in the creation o the irst uniquely Russian school o comosition. With the national success o the grou Rimsky-Korsakov s ame sread and he took u emloyment at the St. Petersburg Conservatory o Music. There he mentored the next generation o great Russian comosers including Igor Stravinsky and Alexander Glazunov. He also wrote two maor music textbooks one on harmony and the other on orchestration. PL E Rimsky-Korsakov s music is known or its masterul and innovative orchestration (the crat o combining instruments together to orm melodies and harmonies). His artul orchestration technique was so well resected that in addition to his own music he even heled orchestrate comositions or his riends in The ive including Mussorgsky (Night on ald Mountain and oris Godunov) and orodin (Prince Igor). Sometimes his hel ended u comletely reshaing the music and creating something very dierent rom the original. Indeed music historians agree that the modern versions o these amous ieces are as much the work o Rimsky-Korsakov as the comosers themselves! SA M Today Rimsky-Korsakov is erhas best known or his symhonic music articularly the orchestral suite Scheherazade. Taking its insiration rom the stories o The Arabian Nights Scheherazade eatures exotic sounds meant to evoke the mysterious orient. During his time however he was better known as an oera comoser with maor works including The Snow Maiden Maid o Pskov Sadko and The Tsar s ride. The oera-ballet Mlada which eatures the Procession o the Nobles was one o his late oeras written in 890. The work is based on Slavic mythology with a antastical story oulated by rinces gods witches and airies. Procession o the Nobles remains one o Rimsky-Korsakov s most well-loved comositions.
